The years of the Second Republic were not bad, far from it. “In Barcelona,
despite the general crisis of industry in our country, we have sold the same as in
previous years: an average of 27,300 m 3 per month. The price has gone from 1.90
to 2.15 pesetas.
Autogenous welding equipment
In Valencia the crisis in the metallurgy sector is more acute than in
Barcelona: about 24,000 m 3 per month, at a price of 2 to 2.30 pesetas.” 10
In the last phase of this period they take on some new representations
compatible with the Linde products or of these themselves. In 1931 they explain to
the partners that they are representing the firm Griesogen (Frankfurt), which
produces autogenous welding gear and cutting material. They also wish to represent
the firm G. H. Walb & Co, and they justify it by the optimum state of their liquid
assets: “Our reserves of cash [explains Isidro Abelló] allow us to extend our
activities in these matters. My nephew Juan Rovira will be in charge of the
commercial side and the other nephew, Isidro Abelló Junior, of the technical side.” 11
Also in 1931 the Board of Directors agreed to devote itself to the
“representation, construction and installation of refrigeration machinery and very
specially in that concerning Linde machinery and procedures.” 12 It was resuscitating
the representation contract signed with Isidro Abelló in 1894, but with the
machinery brought up to date. It was a case of importing refrigeration machinery,
especially compressors, domestic and industrial cupboards from Germany and selling
it in Spain. The German partners asked them to do it and they took it seriously.
