<strong>THE</strong> <strong>DORIS</strong> <strong>NELSON</strong> <strong>ARTS</strong> <strong>SCHOLARSHIP</strong><br />

The Doris Nelson Arts Scholarship is co-sponsored by the City of <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>Arlington</strong>’s Cultural Arts<br />

Division and UA Arts. Named for the City of <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>Arlington</strong>’s first Arts Manager, these two<br />

scholarships are awarded to <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>Arlington</strong> high school seniors who plan to continue further study in<br />

the arts. The scholarships are currently valued at $1,000.00 each. In 2012 they will be awarded to<br />

students who create and/or perform in these arts categories: vocal music, instrumental music, dance,<br />

theatre, film, video and visual arts.<br />

To be considered for these scholarships a student must:<br />

• Be a senior in high school and reside in <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>Arlington</strong>.<br />

• Submit a completed and signed application form.<br />

• Submit support materials and answers to both essay questions listed on application form.<br />

• Submit 2 letters of recommendation - at least one should be from a member of the student’s<br />

high school arts faculty who knows about the student’s artistic achievement.<br />

Award Payment: August 2012<br />

A payable check will be sent to the school he/she will be attending. The non-renewable scholarship<br />

funds are to be used to cover tuition and other educational expenses incurred by the student enrolled<br />

or majoring in the stated discipline. In the event the student withdraws from the college or transfers to<br />

another area of study, the student will notify the Cultural Arts Division and make arrangements to<br />

return the remaining scholarship funds.<br />

Support Materials<br />

DANCE Send DVD of personal work. Include 2 segments of personal work<br />

including technique and performance either group or solo. Music, if any, must be<br />

recorded on the DVD and heard clearly. Applicants should provide information so<br />

the panel can identify them easily.


MUSIC Send a cd of solo work. A score or lead sheet must be provided for each<br />

composition.<br />

<strong>THE</strong>ATRE Send a DVD of work. Submit two contrasting pieces to demonstrate<br />

versatility.<br />

FILM AND VIDEO Send work on a DVD. Two pieces may be submitted and the<br />

panel may review up to 10 minutes of each work. Clearly indicate the portion of<br />

the work that the panel is to review. Film and video artists must have primary<br />

artistic responsibility for the work they submit.<br />

VISUAL <strong>ARTS</strong> Submit 1 CD with 10 images on it in jpg format, no larger that 5MB<br />

each when open. On a separate list write the artist’s name, titles with image<br />

sizes, mediums and prices. Title your digital files with your last name first_ first<br />

name initial_ number then title of piece.<br />

Example: Smith_ J_ 1.Morning Light<br />

Any digital manipulation must be limited to making the digital file look more like<br />

the original art, otherwise risk disqualification.<br />

Essay Questions<br />

Please limit answers to one typed page. A formal resume may be submitted for<br />

question # 1.<br />

1. Describe your particular arts talents and significant arts achievements<br />

in high school.<br />

2. Describe your future plans in the arts and career goals and how this<br />

scholarship will help you achieve your goals?
