C HAPTER 6 Publishing Your Maps on the WMS Servlet or a Web Page Publishing Your Data on the WMS Servlet With the WMS servlet you can make your maps available to others through the Web. After you have installed and configured the WMS servlet, start the WebServer Monitor with you maps project (see “Starting the Geomatica WebServer Monitor” on page 49). The WebServer Monitor provides access to your data to others on the Web. You can also display your project in a Web page (see “Publishing Your Maps in a Web Page” on page 50). When you are building a project, remember the following: 1. Separate your project into layers with similar items together on one layer. For example, put the highways on one layer and the railroads on a separate layer. 2. Identify each layer with a clear, concise, and unique name that represents what appears on the layer. For example, you can name the highway layer HIGHWAYS. 3. Avoid using spaces and commas from the layer names. When the Geomatica WebServer Monitor prepares the project for the Web, spaces and commas are removed, which may cause errors to occur. To avoid problems, label your layers using only the letters of the alphabet, numbers, and the underscore “_”. Other characters may produce unwanted results or errors. Tip When the Shortcut to Focus.exe is used for the Geomatica WebServer Monitor, you can start Geomatica Focus from the Windows Start button or create a new shortcut. Starting the Geomatica WebServer Monitor The Geomatica WebServer Monitor is Geomatica Focus in server mode. As explained in Figure 6.2 on page 51, it provides the WMS servlet with a communication port to the map project that you want to publish and to the Geomatica Focus executable routines so it can process the requests made by the WMS client. The Geomatica WebServer Monitor and the WMS servlet can run on separate computers as long as they can communicate over the network. 49
