from off-form concrete. “Homes on sloping sites usually have entrances at ground level and open up as the site falls away,” says Con. “The living areas at the rear are raised high above ground level, often disconnected from the natural environment. Here, we resolved this disconnect with the concrete staircase, which visually and physically links the point of entry – the cottage – to the main living area on the lower level.” The old cottage, at street level, functions as an extended – and very graceful – gateway to the rest of the home. Follow the concrete staircase down and you find yourself in the ultra-contemporary twolevel addition, the core of all the couple’s activities. The upper (mezzanine) level is Con and Mary’s sanctuary, containing the main bedroom suite and a library. Downstairs are two additional bedrooms and the vast open-plan kitchen/dining/living area, which opens to an entertaining terrace via pivoting glass doors. Doubleheight glazing in the main living/dining area and extensive louvres throughout connect the interior to the lush landscape beyond. The couple was keen to retain a beautiful jacaranda tree located almost in the centre of the site. Much care was taken, with an arborist’s advice, to protect the tree and its extensive root system, with Con working his design around it to ensure it will be enjoyed from all the living areas and for many years to come. The entertaining terrace is partially enclosed by translucent polycarbonate overlaid with striking perforated-copper cladding with a green patinated finish. “The perforated copper provides >
