TAKING CARE Must-know maintenance tips from Ben Shanley, national furniture buyer at Bunnings: TIMBER ❖ Timber furniture can be left outside all year round as long as it’s cleaned and oiled regularly. A waterproof protective cover is recommended. ❖ Clean timber with a solution of liquid bleach and water, and give it a coat of timber oil two or three times per year. ❖ If the timber is looking tired, sand it back before oiling. ALUMINIUM ❖ Aluminium is rust-resistant, but it can get stained and discoloured. You can prolong its life by applying a thin coat of auto wax periodically. Wash it twice a year with a mix of water and mild soap. ❖ Most stains can be sponged off with soapy water. WICKER ❖ Natural wicker should not be left outside for extended periods. Keep it in the shade and protect it with a furniture cover. ❖ Clean wicker regularly with the soft bristle brush of your vacuum cleaner, then wash with mild soapy water, rinse and leave to dry. ❖ To prolong its life, spray wicker with a vinyl protectant. ❖ A fresh coat of paint will revive tired wicker. Use a spray gun for a smooth, even finish. ‘ DESIGNER LOOKS ARE FILTERING DOWN TO MID- LEVEL RANGES, SO YOU CAN HAVE AN ON-TREND LOOK FOR CONSIDERABLY LESS.’ MARK CURTIS, SECRET GARDENS With the weather warming up, thoughts naturally turn to sunny afternoons and long evenings spent outside. Beautiful outdoor furniture that draws you out and invites you to linger should be part of the package. Not so long ago, chunky metal and timber comprised the bulk of outdoor offerings. Now, take your pick from fully upholstered outdoor sofas, cushioned day beds, low-slung armchairs and funky stools that double as side tables. “The lines between indoor and outdoor spaces are blurring,” says Mark Curtis, design manager at Sydney firm Secret Gardens. “We’re seeing furniture with minimalist frames in metal and timber, delicate lacework, moulded wire and powder-coated steel in muted shades.” Outdoor fabrics have also improved, says Cameron Warwick, managing director of Warwick Fabrics. “As finishing and softening processes improve, outdoor fabric is becoming softer to the touch. It’s also incredibly robust and diverse in terms of pattern and style.” But not all outdoor fabrics and furniture are alike, says Warwick. “Look for solution-dyed fabric that is lightfast and stain-resistant and make sure cushioning is made from high-density, reticulated outdoor foam that will allow water to drain and prohibit mould.” When it comes to framing materials, popular options include timber, metal, wicker and moulded plastic. “Mixing different materials was a key trend at this year’s Milan International Furniture Fair,” says Moraima Martinez, contract sales manager at Ke-zu. What you choose will largely depend on your home’s style and location, and how much maintenance you’re prepared to do. Timber, for example, has warm appeal but requires regular oiling. Stainless steel, aluminium and moulded wire are lightweight and low-care but can have quite a utilitarian feel. Natural wicker is known for its rustic charm but needs protection from the elements. Consider how much outdoor space you have and your entertaining style, says Curtis. “Ergonomics should be your first consideration. If space is tight, will the set you’ve chosen leave enough room to walk around comfortably? Do you really need an outdoor dining setting when a sofa and coffee table will do for casual dining? Do you need versatile pieces that can be easily stacked away?” Smart, flexible pieces are ideal in a small outdoor space, says Amanda Grant, outdoor sales leader at Ikea. “Think folding or stackable chairs and tables that pack away or extend, and modular sofas that will give you room to grow if you upsize in the future.” By the buy Take a tip from Triana Odone, national sales manager at King Furniture, and consider the following questions: ❖How will the furniture be used: for alfresco dining, lounging or intimate get-togethers? Modular furniture gives you the option to reconfigure the seating to suit the occasion. ❖Are the frames and fittings made for Australian conditions? The best outdoor furniture is made with marine-grade materials, to resist corrosion and withstand wind, rain, salt and temperature fluctuations. ❖Will the fabric last? It should be treated for protection against UV damage, water, oil and stains. ❖Is maintenance easy? Materials coloured all the way through, rather than surface-coated, will look new for longer with minimal maintenance.
