look, hold back a heavy drape or ensure a streamlined finish.

❖Interior shutters are
available in standard sizes,
or can be custom made for
oddly shaped windows.
They are a particularly
good solution for bay
windows and can be
painted to suit all decors.
With clean lines and
no visible hardware they
have a cool, summery
air about them.
❖Finials finish the look of
the window. And they can
be swapped out to give a
new look to the room
without having to change
the curtains themselves.
❖Paint a plain timber rod a
complementary colour to
work with the rest of your
room. Why not try a gold
or copper paint to mimic
the real thing and give
instant glamour?
❖Make sure the rod you use
can hold the weight of the
fabric. Allow enough rod
length to create space for
the drapes to be drawn
and stacked at each end,
without obstructing the
window or a view.
❖Hang hardware as near to
the ceiling as possible.
This gives the impression
of extra height in the room
and also allows for a
generous fabric drop.
❖Tiebacks give a decorative
edge to a simple window
treatment. Experiment
with handmade ties
such as plaited raffia
or ribbon. Or source
interesting bits like wire
and colourful rope from
