H&G HEALTH STAY ON TRACK It’s tricky to stick to healthy eating on the weekend but it seems to be key to losing weight, writes Paula Goodyer. We often hear discouraging news about weight loss, such as the fact that most people regain the kilos they lose. Now there’s some good news. It comes from the National Weight Control Registry, an ongoing US study following thousands of successful ‘losers’ to identify the habits that help keep weight off long term. One of these habits is having a consistent pattern of healthy eating and exercise seven days a week. That’s easier said than done; because there’s more structure during the working week many people find they can stick to a routine of healthy eating and regular exercise, but then blow it all at the weekend. “If you’re regularly eating and drinking an extra 2000 to 8000 kilojoules between Friday evening and Sunday night you can gain a few extra kilos each month,” says Kate Gudorf, a Sydney-based dietitian. The solution, she says, is to audit your weekend habits to identify where the problems are and work out what you can change. Love weekend breakfasts? You can still have them, just adjust what goes on the plate and how much of it you eat. “Cafe breakfasts can be really big. Two eggs, butter, hash browns, sausage and bacon can amount to 1500 kilojoules in one meal along with your entire day’s quota of fat,” says Gudorf. “Vegetarian breakfasts with tomatoes, mushrooms and avocado are healthier but again the serving sizes can be big. You may be better off sharing one breakfast between two.” It also helps to have a mental picture of what a healthy plate should look like, she says. Half of it should be made up of non-starchy vegetables, one quarter should be a lean protein and the other quarter should be a starchy vegetable or grain-based food. As for alcohol, remember that less is more. The trouble with alcohol isn’t just extra kilojoules, says Gudorf, but the way it makes you want to eat more, and the wrong kinds of food at that. “Then there’s the effects of a hangover the next day, which can make you want to eat fatty food and be less physically active.” You don’t have to make a lot of changes at once, she stresses. Change is sustainable if it’s done in increments. For instance, if you normally finish a bottle of wine on a night out, reduce it to half a bottle. Weekends are also an opportunity to change your habitual mindset. There is no rule that says socialising must involve sitting down and eating, says Gudorf. “There are ways to catch up with friends on weekends that involve moving, whether it’s walking, visiting a museum or trying something like a rock-climbing gym.” # WEEKEND WARRIOR ❖Eating out? Check the menu online to make sure there are leaner dishes with plenty of vegetables. Avoid dishes labelled crispy, crunchy, battered, or fried. ❖Use your free time to walk, try a new form of exercise or experiment with healthier recipes. ❖Keep the kitchen stocked with healthy food. This is key to eating well from Monday to Sunday. ❖If the weekend involves a lot of sitting down (long lunches, movies) compensate with extra exercise.
