patients. This has become an attractive component of what Holy Cross brings to thecommunity it serves. With a very large obstetrics patient population (which increased from6,400 in fiscal 1999 to 9,000 in fiscal 2006), representing a range of cultural andsocioeconomic patient backgrounds, the hospital found that its private room facility designwas attractive to everyone and made possible the delivery of a single, high standard of care.LESSONS LEARNED/NEXT STEPS. As a result of establishing the family centered maternitysuites, Holy Cross is better able to provide care in a manner compatible with their patients’cultural health beliefs and practices. Additionally, the hospital has seen overall growth inobstetrics volume and improved financial performance and patient satisfaction.WHO TO CONTACT. APPENDIX DGroup Discharge Classes in SpanishHoly Cross HospitalCLAS Standards Met: 1, 4-6, 11 and 12.See page 12 for list of CLAS StandardsISSUE. Holy Cross delivers 9,000 babies annually. At registration, 27 percent of obstetricspatients say they speak or prefer a language other than English and seven percent requestedan interpreter. On-site educational and discharge interpretation services for these patients arepreferable to telephonic interpretation services. Holy Cross Hospital created group dischargeclasses in Spanish to enable more patients to be served by bilingual staff and interpreters on atimelier basis. The hospital found the process to be so effective that it offered the groupdischarge approach to English speaking women as well.DISCUSSION. Holy Cross Hospital is a faith-based, mission-driven community teachinghospital in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, serving primarily the residents ofMontgomery and Prince George’s Counties. The hospital is a member of Trinity Health ofNovi, Michigan, the nation’s fourth largest Catholic health care system. Holy Cross Hospitalis the principal partner with the Montgomery County Department of Health and HumanServices Maternity Partnership program, through which uninsured women in MontgomeryCounty receive prenatal, obstetrical, and postpartum services. The obstetrics andgynecological outpatient clinic at Holy Cross Hospital has been in operation since thehospital opened in 1963. However, in 1999, the hospital expanded its commitmentdramatically at the county’s urgent request. Holy Cross immediately realized a 50 percentincrease in service provision, from 800 to 1,200 patients annually requiring expansion to asecond outpatient site. During 2006, 2,349 women entered the Maternity Partnershipprogram, nearly three times the number since program inception in 1999. During the lastfiscal year, 78 percent of the Maternity Partnership patients were Latina. The hospital provides discharge education for all patients. However, due to the number oflimited English proficient (LEP) patients in the hospital’s all-private maternity suitesenvironment, discharge of these patients was often delayed by limited availability ofbilingual staff or until the arrival of an on-site interpreter. The hospital created groupdischarge classes in Spanish to help improve the process.BENEFITS/RESULTS. If all women who give birth at the hospital were discharged twohours earlier due to timely provision of discharge classes, the hospital projects it coulddischarge an additional 265 women annually. There is considerable evidence that promptdischarge of patients leads to better quality of care, greater customer satisfaction, and costsavings.LESSONS LEARNED/NEXT STEPS. Group discharge classes are popular with patientsand their families. The hospital saves money by reducing the use of interpretation services byholding group discharge classes in lieu of individual discharge counseling. In addition, women are discharged faster. Holy Cross found that the quality of discharge educationimproved using a group format for reasons associated with group dynamics and improved37
