JURIS DOCTOR DEGREE 9tical support to all LL.M. students registered in the program.Students admitted to the J.D. program will be treated as transfer students. Upon beginningthe J.D. program, they will receive 28 credits of advanced standing for legalstudies completed outside of the United States. Students can thus complete the LL.M.degree in one year and the J.D. degree in an additional two years.Visiting (Unclassified) StudentsA law student who is in good academic standing as a degree candidate at an ABA-approvedlaw school may be admitted to the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>School</strong> as an unclassified student and earn creditfor transfer to his or her law school. Students may apply for visiting student status duringthe fall, spring, or summer semesters. Admission will be based on the availability of space.<strong>The</strong> deadlines for application materials are June 15 for the fall semester, November 15 forthe spring semester, and May 1 for the summer session.Degree RequirementsTo earn the Juris Doctor degree, students must satisfactorily meet the following academicrequirements: completion of 84 credit hours, 67 of which must have been takenfor a letter grade; fulfillment of the enrollment requirement; completion of each coursein the required curriculum with a passing grade; and maintenance of the minimumgrade-point average of 1.67. Once a student has earned 84 total credits and fully met theJuris Doctor degree requirements, they are barred from registering for additional creditsin a new semester as a Juris Doctor candidate without the prior approval of the AcademicScholarship Committee. Students with transfer status must have a minimum of 48graded credits to graduate.Course Scheduling Requirements for Full- and Part-Time StatusFull-time students (i.e., those registered for 12 or more credits in any semester) musttake the majority of their credits in courses in the day unless an exception for good causeis granted by the dean of students. Registration in journals, skills competitions, fieldplacement, and clinical courses count as day credits. After completing courses in the requiredfirst-year curriculum, which must be taken in the evening, part-time students (i.e.,those registered for a maximum of 11 credits) may take courses in the day or evening.Transfer Between the Full-Time and Part-Time (Evening) ProgramsAfter the first semester, students may, with the permission of the dean of students, transferfrom one program to another, but should be aware that there may be enrollmentrequirement consequences (see below).Students initially enrolled in the part-time (evening) program may, with the permissionof the dean of students, transfer to the full-time program as early as their secondsemester. Students who are permitted to pursue this option after completion of the firstsemester must take all required first-year curriculum courses in the evening. In addition,such students must make up 4 or more credit hours during summer sessions in order tofulfill enrollment and other degree requirements and be eligible to graduate in threeyears.See Enrollment Requirement, Required Curriculum, and Academic Work Load, below,for regulations governing the full-time and part-time (evening) programs and the
