PROXIMITYWhat is a proximity sensor?Proximity sensors remotely detect the presence of nearbyobjects (non-contact). Various detection technologies canbe used depending on the application and the nature ofthe objects to be detected. Infrared optical or reflectivesensors can detects presence of any opaque objects in arange of millimeters to centimeters. Capacitive or resistivesensors detect the change of capacity or resistance betweenthe sensor pad and objects to determine the presence ormovement of the objects.ApplicationCasesObject detectionHuman machineinterfaceReal Life ExamplesBulk-handling machinesLevel detectorsPackage detectionHandheld devices, appliancesTypical applicationsProximity sensors are often found in bulk-handling machines, liquid or tank level detectors, and printing presses, forexample. IR reflective proximity sensors are widely usedtoday for ON/OFF switch control for lighting, occupancy, access control and mobile devices.Touch controllers, including capacitive and resistive types, arebecoming popular due to improved sensitivity and accuracy. It is intuitive and easy to use, and the sensor pad can besealed from the surrounding environment, which makes it anideal solution for harsh or dusty environments. Some touchcontrollers achieve high sensitivity that can sense presenceof a finger through thick winter gloves.PROXIMITY85www.FutureElectronics.com/Sensors
