Apart from information about the administrative affiliationof each town or village of the II Republic of Poland (parish, county, province)(gmina, powiat, województwo), the Index provides information about the seatof the court and even the distance to the nearest railway station. It also showsthe affiliation of any given place to a Roman Catholic, Greek Catholic orEvangelical parish. The index does not, however, supply information abouta place’s affiliation to any Israelite denominational community.Jerzy Michalewicz, Jewish Register Districts and Jewish denominationalcommunities in Galicia, (Żydowskie okręgi metrykalne i żydowskie gminywyznaniowe w Galicji), Kraków 1995. In this work, the counties (powiaty)appear in alphabetical order. Within each county, the Jewish Register Districtsalso appear in alphabetical order, according to the name of the place whichwas the District’s seat. Apart from the place name, each entry also lists whichJewish denominational community and which court district this given JewishRegister District’s seat with its whole area appertained to. Furthermore, in thefootnotes there is information about any changes of affiliation of a particularadministrative community in the organisational structure of the state andother information about organisational changes within Jewish communities.Apart from the above-mentioned sources, one can make use of:⇒Szematyzms of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomerya with the Grand Duchyof Krakow. (Szematyzmy Królestwa Galicyi i Lodomeryi z Wielkim KsięstwemKrakowskim). Szematyzm is an Austrian annual publication, issued between1782 and 1914 and written in the German language, and subsequently from1870 also in Polish. It contains an organisational schema of the administrativeauthorities of any given part of the state. In Galicia, it contained lists ofthe surnames of the officials employed in particular institutions of the c.k.(imperial and royal) administration. Some chapters of Szematyzm contain datafrom previous years, e.g. statistics concerning the inhabitants. Each annualstarts with a list of staff changes that had taken place since the publicationof the previous issue. The following pages were entitled “Content” andcontain information in alphabetical order, excepting the assemblage of the c.k.governors and c.k. deputies in Galicia since the incorporation of the provinceinto the Austrian monarchy. The annuals also contain information aboutthe administrative authorities of Galicia, as well as the names of the officialsemployed in particular institutions: the names of councillors, teachers, schoolemployees, public institutions and charity associations staff. Each annual isaccompanied by an index of surnames.45
