Step 7We can also learn about of our relatives’ war history from the files created immediatelyafter the war. We can carry out our genealogical research first of all in the files of theCity Board in Krakow (Zarząd Miejski w Krakowie) 1945–1950. This collection of filescontains application forms and a card index concerning the registration of war damagessuffered by individuals and corporate bodies in Krakow and other places with the followinginformation: place name, street name, house number, name and family name. The type of material damage was mentioned as well, but the main information were thenames of family members who had been injured or died during the war, together withthe description of the circumstances in which these events had happened.Furthermore, the files of The State Repatriate Office, Provincial Branch in Krakow,(Państwowy Urząd Repatriacyjny Wojewódzki Oddział w Krakowie) 1945–1950 andof The City Committee of Social Care in Krakow, (Miejski Komitet Opieki Społecznejw Krakowie) 1945–1950 contain cards of the people coming back to Poland after thewar from various parts of the world where they had found themselves as a result of militaryoperations, also the cards of the people displaced from the east. Apart from name, family name, date and place of birth, these cards also contain short information aboutthe war history of a given person or the family, the place of domicile in Krakow and theaim of their journey.Step 8The more we go back into the past, the more difficult it becomes to carry out researchdue to the small amount of preserved material and also because of its nature. Thesematerials are difficult to use, as they require knowledge of Latin and palaeography and isoften a difficult task even for an experienced historian-genealogist.the 19th centuryOn the basis of the censuses and birth, marriage and death records we can easilyestablish our relatives living in Krakow in the 19 th century. If we want to learn moreabout their life, we can have a look at the mortgage records, court files (cases concerninginheritance and guardianship over minors, the so-called pupilaria), school files, documentsconcerning the registration of businesses and other forms of economic activity and filesof various societies and associations.67
