Step 4Another institution which registered births and deaths of the inhabitants of Krakowwas The Health Office. Its files, kept between 1841 and 1953, are comprised of thebooks containing births between 1904 and 1949, covering entries of individuals born inthe area of Krakow, irrespective of their religious denomination; furthermore, the booksof deaths of the city of Krakow between 1841 and 1951 and the books of deaths of thetown of Podgórze between 1899 and 1915, recorded separately for Catholics and forJews. Besides, this collection of files also contains the rolls of accoucheuses and midwivestogether with births between 1910 and 1941.Step 5The files of the Starost Office of Krakow cover the years from 1919 until 1939.Its territorial extent included either solely the city of Krakow (between 1921 and1924 and then between 1929 and 1939) or the city of Krakow together with the adjacentvillages and towns of the county of Krakow and Wieliczka (between 1919 and 1921 andthen between 1925 and 1928).Within this office’s duties was the registration and supervision of organisations,unions and associations; supervision over the press and printing houses, the overseeing oftheatres, cinemas, shows and public fetes; issuing passports, identity cards and moralitycertificates; registration of individuals’ domiciles, registration of vehicles, arms andammunition. The office also dealt with penal and administrative as well as sanitary andmobilizational matters.The archival materials which are most valuable for genealogical reasons are thosewhich contain personal data. In the files of Starostwo Grodzkie Krakowskie there are, firstof all, application forms for Identity Cards and passports and the roll of the inhabitantsof the capital city of Krakow.90% of application forms for Identity Cards kept in this archival collection are theforms lodged by Jewish inhabitants and contain a lot of information about the people wholodged them. The type of information resembles that included in the recently withdrawnIDs, the so-called booklet form: apart from name, family name, date and place of birth ofthe applicant, the parents’ names, the applicant’s occupation and domicile are included.According to the regulations made by the President of the Republic of Poland from theinterwar period, all citizens were to register their domicile and thus could demand an ID.58
