⇒authorities of the Krakow and L’vov provinces, the administrative division ofKrakow, lists of doctors and lawyers, as well as a register of houses withinthe area of the city of Krakow (a list of their owners). Furthermore, a registerof the inhabitants of Krakow (with the name, profession or trade, andoccupation) and a register of professions and trades (according to trade andprofessional groups)A list of place names in the Polish Peoples' Republic, (Spis miejscowości PolskiejRzeczypospolitej Ludowej) published in Warsaw in 1968 contains informationconcerning the administrative affiliation of a given city, town or village and theappropriate Register Office.Step 2If we know where our relatives lived, we can start our research from the censuses, inwhich we may find out in where they lived, when they were born, what their religiousfaith was, if they had a spouse or children. For those seeking family members in Krakow,we can look them up in the roll of the Civil-and-Military Order Commission (KomisjaPorządkowa Cywilno-Wojskowa) of the Krakow Province, from the years 1790–1792 andin the Censuses of the City of Krakow from the years 1850, 1857, 1870, 1880, 1890,1900, 1910 and 1921 and also in the Censuses of the Town of Podgórze from the years1857, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900 and 1910. If we know an address, it is possible to establishthe appropriate parish or the Jewish Register District, thus we would be able to find birth, marriage and death certificates, as well as birth certificates of any children.A search in any particular Censuses should start from the index. Indexes were madein alphabetical order, according to family names. Between 1850 and 1910, only headsof family were listed in the index, other family members being mentioned by the abbreviation“z f.”, meaning “with the family”. Later, that is in the Censuses from 1900, 1910and 1921, all family members living together in the year of the census were listed inthe indexes. Thus, already at the stage of looking through the index, we can establish ifa given census contains an entry concerning our family members. It should be stressed, that it was only as late as the Censuses from 1900, 1910 and 1921 that a family name wasaccompanied by the number of which particular volume and entry number we shouldconsult: earlier the district name and a house number where a person lived were given. The oldest Census kept in the State Archive in Krakow can be found in the files of theCivil-and-Military Order Commission (Komisja Porządkowa Cywilno-Wojskowa) of theKrakow Province and comes from the years 1790–1792. Its territorial range stretchedover the then Krakow Voievodship. The Census was made according to parishes: thesewere the parishes of the city of Krakow and the counties of Krakow, Książ, Lelów,Proszowice. Contained is also a census of the Jewish population.47
