Our country’shistory began here when in 1775 <strong>the</strong>“shot that was heard around <strong>the</strong> world”started <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary War.Massachusetts is more than <strong>the</strong> Cradle<strong>of</strong> American Liberty. In 1620, <strong>the</strong> Pilgrimsescaping from religious persecution,landed at Plymouth Rock. I think wemight be <strong>the</strong> most “citified” <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> NewEngland states.As a major seaport, Boston is multiculturaland most wonderfully cosmopolitan.She is known as <strong>the</strong> “hub” <strong>of</strong> education,medicine, <strong>the</strong>ater and sports, to name aNew York/New JerseyBunny BarbaOur first meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>2009</strong>-2010season will take place on Tuesday, Sept.Photo IDsCustomer Service8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Monday through FridayBring current ID or temp IDfew.Massachusetts has produced severalpresidents, most recently John F. Kennedy.And, you may know, all <strong>the</strong> glamourand tourism <strong>the</strong> Kennedy Compound onCape Cod has produced over <strong>the</strong> years.As well as Cape Cod, we have Cape Ann,a mecca for those who love quaint fishingvillages reeking <strong>of</strong> seafaring history.We boast <strong>of</strong> championship sportsteams, Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins and NewEngland Patriots.Inland, <strong>the</strong>re are mountains, not quiteas majestic as <strong>the</strong> Rockies, but imposing,especially in <strong>the</strong> autumn when <strong>the</strong> foliagebursts with blazing colors. People fromall over <strong>the</strong> world flock to Massachusettsand o<strong>the</strong>r New England states that time<strong>of</strong> year.Folks from o<strong>the</strong>r “pahts” <strong>of</strong> our countrythink we Bostonians talk funny. Wheredid <strong>the</strong>y “evah” get that “idearrrr?”Why is this state called Mass.? Peopledo not say Tex., Conn. or Wisc. Do you tellpeople you live in Fla.?Perhaps you have guessed by now thatMassachusetts is my home state. If it is(was) yours too, I encourage you to joinour New England Club. The first meeting<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new season is scheduled for October.In <strong>the</strong> meantime, stop by our table andmeet our president, Lorraine Benotti, at<strong>the</strong> Club Fair on Sept. 17 in <strong>the</strong> Health &Recreation Building.What does New England have that isunique? Christmas tree shops! So, if you“evah” are in New England and love a bargain,be sure to stop and shop because<strong>the</strong>y sell much more than holiday items.15. The actual meeting begins at 3 p.m.but come early to enjoy refreshments.Please note that all members and futuremembers are welcome to attend. All money bet will bereturned to <strong>the</strong> winners.For those <strong>of</strong> you who are new to <strong>On</strong><strong>Top</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>World</strong>, our meetings are heldon <strong>the</strong> second Wednesday <strong>of</strong> each month.The meetings are held at 3 p.m. (exceptfor December which is 5 p.m.) but we urgeyou to come around 2:30 p.m. for refreshmentsand fellowship.Also, for newcomers, you do not haveto be from Pennsylvania to be a member;in fact, we don’t have any rules, just fun.We hope to see you Sept. 9 in <strong>the</strong> ArborConference Center, Suites E and F.Summer vacations are just about overfor most <strong>of</strong> us.
