20 The World News® September 2009Arbor ClubTennisJorge PrivatWelcome to September. I have beenparticularly impressed by the fact that inspite of the weather conditions, most ofyou have come to the courts on a regularbasis. We needed to stop the ladder, as wedid last year, to take a break from the hotweather, recharge our cylinders, so thatwe can get it restarted this month withrenewed interest. Please, don’t forget tosign up for it so I can prepare the schedulesaccordingly. The inter-communitymatches will also start as soon as thetemperature is more bearable.I would also like to mention that thepopularity of pickleball is again on therise, and in order to accommodate thegrowing group of pickleball enthusiasts inthe community, the management has decidedto build new pickleball courts. Thisis simply terrific, because it enhances thevariety of racquet sports that are offeredto all of you. I encourage all of you whodon’t play tennis, to try this sport that allowsyou to reach the ball with more easeand still get good, fun exercise.I had a request to mention that tennisplayers have become a great source ofTennisAssociationH&R CenterCourts ScheduleMixed DoublesSaturday & Monday, 8 a.m.-noonMen’s DoublesTuesday & Thursday, 8 a.m.-noonLadies’ DoublesWednesday & Friday, 8 a.m.-noonAll Resident TennisPlayers Welcome.shoes and sneakers for the homeless whodepend upon Interfaith for food shelterand clothing. So, if you have any discards, please drop them off at the Health & RecreationBuilding or at the Arbor Club office.Stan Magen will be glad to pick themup.Tennis Tip of the MonthGetting to the ball, getting away fromthe ball, in balance and ready to hit is thekey for every player.“Float like a butterfly...sting like a bee”- Muhammad Ali’s popular line was notreferring to tennis, but the similarities arethere.Good footwork is the precondition foreverything else in tennis. If you can’t getto the ball, your fantastic strokes won’thelp you at all. Good balance is necessarywhen you hit a tennis ball, just as whenyou hit a golf ball.Have you ever miss-hit a ball, shankingit on the throat of the racquet? Ofcourse, you have. One of the reasonsthis happens is because you are not setcomfortably at the point of contact. Yourskills improve when you make contact onbalance, feet on the ground, front kneeslightly bent with your head motionless.Your footwork helps you reach this balancedposition.Whether you are an up-and-comingcompetitive junior or a recreational doublessenior, you must understand footworkand put it into practice. Here aresome clues that will help you improveyour footwork and move you up the ladder.1. Don’t Wait Around Flat-Footed:Between shots, all good players use thebounce step to keep poised and springinto action. The message gets from yourhead to your feet faster if you get up onthe balls of your feet, flex your knees alittle, and bounce rhythmically betweenshots, or at least, move your heels up anddown alternately.2. Shuffle Step to the Ball: Do notwalk, but shuffle. Many small steps arepreferable to a couple of long steps; unlessthe ball is far. Good footwork meanstaking a number of shuffle steps to theball so you can easily make an adjustmentand be on balance.3. Stride Into the Ball: Many playersmake the mistake of moving only sidewaysor parallel to the baseline to playthe ball. Move back to move forward.Shuffle step back so you have room totake a good stride into the ball. Collapseyour front knee before you hit the ball -“shuffle...step...hit.”4. Slide-Step Back Into Position: Aftermaking the shot, slide-step back to yourplaying position. If you cross your feet orturn your back as you return to the centerof the court, your opponent may hit theball behind you. To keep that from occurring, move back with your shoulders andfeet parallel to the net. If, however, youfind yourself out of the court after hittingthe ball, then forget about sliding, putone foot in front of the other and run!Wishing you good moves!Directorof GolfSally CollinsDo you remember the Pointer Sisters? How about their song “I’m So Excited?”Wonder why I ask that in a golf article?Maybe that’s due to the fact that it’s exactlyhow our golf staff feels as we enterthe month of September.
