24 The World News® September 2009ShuffleboardRobert RiedemanSummer shuffleboard ended at theend of August. Play took place on Mondayand Thursday mornings. Charlie Lentz reportsthat there was a good turnout mostMondays and Frank Dubay says that theThursday numbers were more modest.Dodging raindrops was a problem someof the time. Summer play has been replacedas of September by the regular fallschedule, which will continue throughoutPhoto by Robert RiedemanFrank Dubay gets off a shotduring Thursday morning play.the winter and spring. Instruction is available for beginningparticipants as well as experiencedplayers, if desired. If a new player wishesto have a more formal introduction to thegame, he or she may call our play instructor,John Mataya at 237-9692. Those whodesire more information may call FrankDubay at 236-6638 or Robert Riedemanat 861-1501.Shuffleboard is a game of skill, whichis very enjoyable. So come on down tothe courts (behind the Health & RecreationBuilding). Who knows – you may gethooked. We have club meetings two orthree times a year followed by a luncheonand entertainment under the direction ofour very capable social director, HeleneSternberger. As of this writing, members John Matayaand Vern Uzzell are in San Franciscotaking part in the National ShuffleboardTournament where they are playing inboth singles and doubles. The next general membership meetingwill be held on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 11a.m. in the Health & Recreation Ballroom.Stay tuned for more details on this event.BilliardsRichard ImpresaThis column will begin to addresswhat I consider the second most importantshot in pool, the break shot.A successful break shot will accomplishthree things. First, it will pocket atleast one ball. Second, it will leave the cueball in the middle of the table for a goodfollow up shot, and third will allow you tocontrol the table by continuing to shoot. In eight ball, there is an added advantageof allowing you to decide which balls(solid or striped) you want to choose (thiswill be discussed in greater detail in a futurearticle when we talk about the differentgames and their idiosyncrasies). The first element in a good break isyour stance. For the break, your stanceshould be a little more open than yourshooting stance (i.e., feet further apartfor a more solid base) and you shouldstand more upright than usual. These twoelements will allow your body to delivermaximum power to the cue ball.BocceBob WoodsThe bocce board held its first meetingthe first Monday of August; there was agood turnout of officers. The first item onthe agenda was opening day of bocce forthe 2009-2010 season, with the first ballbeing rolled on Oct. 12.Emergency After-HoursPhone Number236-OTOW (236-6869)Now that I’ve mentioned the word“power” I need to explain that power, orspeed, is not the only answer to a successfulbreak shot. In my opinion, accuracyis more important. Studies have shownthat “speed kills” when over applied to abreak shot. Many studies reported thata cue ball will jump off the table whencontacting a cushion while traveling at29 MPH or more. Don’t laugh, driving 29MPH in the passing lane on SR 200 is slow(to some of us) but the force it takes tomake a cue ball go from a dead stop to 29MPH in less than approximately five-feetis formidable.Accuracy, in this case, can be definedas hitting the selected object ball full onwith the cue ball, that is, not off to oneside or another but dead on. Don’t eventhink about applying english (sidespin) onthe cue ball until you are well advanced inyour break game, it will inevitably resultin an off center hit of the object ball, andgreatly increase your chance of scratching. When the object ball is hit dead on, ittransfers almost a full 100% of the forceof the cue ball to the rest of the rack causingthe balls to scatter. While it is true,a harder (faster) shot would increase theforce; it is also true that even the minimalamount of inaccuracy will drastically decreasethe force applied to the rack.Practice is the only way you can determinethe speed at which you personallyare able to maintain a full face hit on theobject ball. Once you’ve got that downyou’ve licked the hardest aspect of thebreak shot.In a future column, I’ll get into someother aspects of the break shot e.g. cueball placement, physics of the rack andbreak, etc.Until then, keep stroking and keepyour tip dry.The board discussed the new rules ofplay for the bocce league, which will takeeffect immediately and those rules willbe posted on the inside of the shed door. There was a little discussion on the rulesbut everything was hammered out.The board would like to extend a heartythank you to four folks in the bocce organizationwho spent many hours draftingup the new rules. They are Kathy Sickler,Lorraine Staby, Karen McNeeley and LouCrudele. Again, thank you.For a matter of interest, the board votedunanimously to have a breakfast insteadof a banquet. Right now, we are lookingfor a Saturday morning at the MethodistChurch on SW 103rd Street. More aboutthe breakfast as time draws closer.Anyone interested in playing bocceduring the regular season, all league representativesand their phone numbersplus time slots are posted on the bulletinboard at the courts. This is for all thosewishing to play open bocce, league ormatch play. Remember, anyone can play, and play in any type league they wish, orplay in all three if that’s what is desired. You pay just $6 yearly dues to your leaguerep and that’s good for all play. Before I forget, the next board meetingwill be held on Monday, Sept. 14. Also, thenew club by-laws are posted on the insideof the shed door.Your board of directors are Ralph Sickler,732-2363; Bob O’Neal, 861-2861; andmyself, Bob Woods, 854-0702.Golf Cart BatteriesWe Do Repairs & Service At Your Home6 Volt Batteries & 8 Volt BatteriesBest Prices / Call Us LastMotors Too* Plus tax & EPADelivered & Installed Free804-0722We also sell preowned golf carts & tiresTe e Pe e Ti r e &Bu d g e t Mu f f l e rService You Can Trust by Certified Techs • Family Owned & Operated • Est. 1990AUTO CARE CENTERcorner S.R. 200 and 91st AVE.237-5599BUDGET MUFFLER2040 n Pine Ave.622-0075Air Conditioning • Alignments • Batteries • Brakes • Computer Scan • Custom Wheels • Custom Exhaust • DiagnosticExtended • Warranties • Mufflers • Shocks • Struts • Tires • Trailer Tires & Wheels • Transmission Service • Wiper Blades✮Lube-Oil-Filter$18 95 Up to 5 qts. oil10-W-30 or15-W-40Pour in theProtectionMotor Oil✮FREE Tire RotationWith Oil ChangeMost Cars Complete ServiceTop Off Fluids • Check Air Pressure inTires • Inspect Belts & HosesMust present coupon.
