As diverse asthey are, they are sunsets and summercloud buildups, the Computer Club andthe R/C airfield. What a mix!Our sunsets and cloud buildups aresecond to none! With few houses aroundus at present, if you are fortunate tohave your house facing west you knowwhat I mean. I have seen sunsets in a lotof places, but the variance in the cloudstructures at different times of year hereis magnificent.Prefacing this evening show are thesummer day cumulonimbus cloud buildups. We are blessed to have these buildupsbecause our position in Central Floridahas us under opposing offshore windsfrom the Gulf and the Atlantic, which oftenlead to thunderstorms here. Now I have to plug one of my favoriteorganizations here…the Computer Club! This club is well run by a group of computerwizards that used to be involvedin many facets of computer technologyin their prior working lives. It’s their desireto want to convey computer issues inplain English that is commendable, as istheir focus on questions and answers forall levels of computer users.I have learned a lot from this club, andso much of this learning is fresh becauseof changing technology. There are a lot ofpeople living here that just missed usingcomputers in their working careers. Thisclub goes out of its way for these peoplewith some pretty good training classes, guest speakers and a great web site filledwith information (www.cccocala.org).When I rounded the corner on the dirtroad on a sunny Saturday morning andfirst saw the R/C airport, it brought backsome childhood memories. I used to hangout at all sorts of airports when I was akid. Naturally, someone would offer aflight…and from then my interest in allthings aviation was kindled. The R/C field is an exceptional area, apparently well managed with a focus onsafety. Although the principles of flightare the same, as a former single enginepilot, I know that R/C flying is differentfrom standard aircraft flying….so somedayI plan to tackle this challenge. I havethe club application form all filled out!But it’s only because there are so manyother things going on here that I have delayedgetting really involved. Then there’s the smell of sawdust atthe Wood Shop, the great gym, the beautyof the golf courses and trees here, and onand on…but these are other stories. September 2009 The World News® 7View fromthe LibraryDoris KnightDid you ever hear the phrase conciergemedicine? I never had until I read “Crisis”by Robin Cook, a mystery novel with animportant point to make. Cook is a doctorand “a master of the medical thriller”(The New York Times). An author’s note appended to the bookgives a fairly detailed explanation of conciergemedicine. A relatively new arrangement,it is a style of primary care that requiresa membership fee (from hundredsto thousands of dollars) and guarantees akind of personal services not available todayin the typical doctor’s office: such ashouse calls, comfortable reception roomswith very short waits, and 24-hour accessto your doctor. The author is concerned with thegrowth of such practices because it nowmakes available for a high fee what onceGenealogicalSocietyElizabeth Kyle“What’s your genealogical style?”asks an article from March 2008 in FamilyTree Magazine. Right now, I’ve cometo the conclusion that I am part passivesearcher and part weekend warrior. Neitherdescription is especially flattering.Consequently, I have some nerve attemptingto write a monthly article! There are several options for correctingthese less than sterling habits, and Iuse many of them.Make a list of missing information, anddevise a plan for getting results - this hashelped in the past.had been considered basic to the practiceof medicine. It could obviously mean fewerdoctors available for those who cannotafford concierge medicine, and some doctorsmay be attracted to this style.Robin Cook tells us more about theproblems of today’s medical care -therush, the lack of concern because there isno time. He admits that in an ideal world, concierge medicine is the kind of medicinehe would like to perform if he was apracticing physician in today’s world. Buthe is also disturbed by the fate of all thepeople who cannot afford such personalcare. The novel is the story of Dr. Craig Bowman, who practices concierge medicineand finds himself being sued for malpracticeby the husband of one of his problempatients. We follow the story from the momentof the patient’s death, through thetrial, the support of his estranged wife, and the assistance of Dr. Jack Stapleton. His brother-law, Stapleton, works inthe office of the Chief Medical Examinerof New York City. At the request of hissister Alexis, he comes to Boston wherethe death occurred to attempt to assisthis brother-in-law.We learn much about Jack’s profession, get a detailed description of an autopsyand follow the trial, which has adeadline by which it must be finished setby the judge. Jack is also working to completethe autopsy in time to be present athis own wedding in New York City. Thestory concludes with a surprise twist atthe very end.“Crisis” is enjoyable, peopled by interestingcharacters and provides the opportunityto learn more about the practiceof medicine in today’s fast moving andsometimes chaotic life.Join your local genealogical society -did that three years ago.Take a class - I will have taken FamilyTree Maker at Master the Possibilities inAugust. Courses are wonderful motivators.Attend a workshop or conference -George Morgan is coming to Master thePossibilities in October. His enthusiasm iscatching. Don’t miss this excellent speaker.I think I’ve conquered the passive researcherpart. The weekend warrior partwill have to come next.My workspace is pitiful. It is the equivalentof three large desks with “stuff” everywhere,on top, in drawers, on shelves,in binders. It’s time to make order out ofthe chaos. Set aside time on my calendarevery week for genealogy because what’snot on the calendar doesn’t happen. Partof this time needs to go to making orderout of chaos, and part to doing more seriousresearch. No more hit or miss for me.Discovery is the greatest motivator. We will be meeting once a month untilOctober when the third Monday meetingwill resume. Our business meeting is held on thesecond Monday at 10 a.m. in Room 3 ofthe Arts and Crafts Building.
