These target villages are one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> worst drought-prone areas <strong>of</strong>Chit<strong>to</strong>or D<strong>is</strong>trict and <strong>is</strong> repeatedly affected by severe fam<strong>in</strong>e due <strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous failure <strong>of</strong> monsoon.Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground water department water level <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> target villages hascome down from 7.60 meters <strong>to</strong> 14 meters now. Ra<strong>in</strong>fall came down from 1128 mm <strong>to</strong> 611 mm <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> last few years, while <strong>the</strong> exploitation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ground water resources had gone up upsett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>delicate balance. Water <strong>is</strong> life but unfortunately <strong>the</strong>se target villagers and school children still do nothave th<strong>is</strong> basic need. The pilot project <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>tended <strong>to</strong> solve water shortages <strong>in</strong> 2 primary schools <strong>to</strong>reduce <strong>the</strong> burden <strong>of</strong> fetch<strong>in</strong>g water faced by school-go<strong>in</strong>g children dur<strong>in</strong>g classes through ra<strong>in</strong> waterharvest<strong>in</strong>g and s<strong>to</strong>rage <strong>in</strong> two villages <strong>of</strong> Chit<strong>to</strong>or D<strong>is</strong>trict. Th<strong>is</strong> has <strong>be</strong>en achieved now through th<strong>is</strong>pilot project.7. Description <strong>of</strong> your activities with <strong>the</strong> JWF Fund (with<strong>in</strong> 500 words): To tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> entire community by provid<strong>in</strong>g awareness on ra<strong>in</strong> water harvest<strong>in</strong>g catchmentssystems. Ra<strong>in</strong>water collects from <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong><strong>to</strong>p <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> school build<strong>in</strong>g. Th<strong>is</strong> water <strong>is</strong> guided <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> overflowpipes. The pipes will <strong>be</strong> connected <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> underground tank.
