Description of the water issues/ objectives of your activities (within 250 words):The 2 remote primary schools in the villages of Veerakanellore and C.Bandapalli belong to ChittoorDistrict, Andhra Pradesh, India. These target villages are one of the worst drought-prone areas ofChittoor District and is repeatedly affected by severe famine due to continuous failure of monsoon.According to the official records of the ground water department water level in the target villages hascome down from 7.60 meters to 14 meters now. Rainfall came down from 1128 mm to 611 mm inthe last few years, while the exploitation of the ground water resources had gone up upsetting thedelicate balance. Water is life but unfortunately these target villagers and school children still do nothave this basic need. The pilot project is intended to solve water shortages in 2 primary schools toreduce the burden of fetching water faced by school-going children during classes through rain waterharvesting and storage in two villages of Chittoor District. This has been achieved now through thispilot project.7. Description of your activities with the JWF Fund (within 500 words): To train the entire community by providing awareness on rain water harvesting catchmentssystems. Rainwater collects from the rooftop of the school building. This water is guided into overflowpipes. The pipes will be connected to the underground tank.
JWF Fund 2010 Report #531 Installed the rectangular underground tank for rainwater harvesting from the nearby schoolbuilding with bricks, cement, water proofing powder (gypsum), coarse sand and sandstone slabfor roofing. The tank once it gets filled with rainwater, the water can be accessed through simple means witha bucket.8. The number of direct beneficiaries of your project:All the 1,200 Primary school children from the 2 primary schools will be the primary beneficiaries. Allof these children are aged about 5- 12 years (boys and girls).
