Novosti - newsPoletni vozni red31. marca 2013 je stopil v veljavo poletni vozni red. <strong>Adria</strong> <strong>Airways</strong>povezuje z več kot 170 rednimi leti tedensko slovensko prestolnicoz 18 destinacijami. Adrijina letala vas popeljejo v Amsterdam,Beograd, Bruselj, Carigrad, na Dunaj, v Frankfurt, København,Manchester, Moskvo, Muenchen, Pariz, Podgorico, Prištino,Sarajevo, Skopje, Split, Zuerich in v Tirano. Kot članica združenjaletalskih prevoznikov Star Alliance omogoča <strong>Adria</strong> <strong>Airways</strong> zelodobre in cenovno ugodne povezave z destinacijami po vsemsvetu. Users can now find out everything about their selected destination,along with flight timetables and fares, all in one place. DEL).Foto: Tomaž KonjarV prvem delu smo spoznali atmosfero in silo – vzgon, ki letalu omogoča letenje. Vzgon nastane zaradi razlike v zračnemtlaku med zgornjo in spodnjo površino krila. Zaradi oblike krila je hitrost obtekajočega zraka nad krilom višja kot podnjim. Različni hitrosti imata za posledico različen zračni tlak in nastanek sile, ki deluje v smeri nazgor.Faktorji, od katerih je odvisen vzgon, ki nastane na kriluHitrost zračnega toka, ki obteka kriloPri večji hitrosti letala je tudi hitrost obtekajočega zraka okoli krila večja,kar se odrazi v večjem vzgonu. Med vzletom pridobiva letalo hitrost spomočjo potiska iz motorjev. Pri vnaprej določeni hitrosti, ki je odvisnaod teže letala, smeri in jakosti vetra, temperature zraka, odklona zakrilcter stanja steze (suha, mokra ali kontaminirana), je sila vzgona dovoljvelika, da omogoča dvig letala od tal. Med letenjem s stalno hitrostjoin stalno višino je sila vzgona enaka sili teže letala. Pri spuščanju pa sezmanjša moč motorjev in letalo preide v drsni let. Sama hitrost vplivatudi na pojav tako imenovanega tlačnega skoka. Do tega pojava pride,ko se letalo približuje hitrosti zvoka, ki se odraža z Machovim številom(Mach 1). Ko obtekajoči zrak na nekem mestu na krilu doseže hitrostzvoka, se močno poveča upor, vzgon pa se zmanjša, zato so letala, ki seuporabljajo za prevoz potnikov, omejena na maksimalno hitrost letenjamed 0,80 in 0,90 Machovega števila.Oblika krila in debelina profila krilaČe krilo prerežemo po vertikali, dobimo profil krila. Profili se delijo poobliki na simetrične in nesimetrične; simetrični se uporabljajo za krmilnein stabilizacijske površine letala, nesimetrični pa za površine, kjer nastajavzgon, torej za krila.Po debelini pa profile delimo na tanke, srednje in debele; tanki se uporabljajoza velike hitrosti letenja, debelejši pa za nižje. Pri enaki hitrosti letenjaustvari debeljši profil večji vzgon kot tanjši. Seveda pa ustvarja debelejšiprofil tudi večji upor, zato je potrebno glede na namembnost letala izbratitak profil, ki zagotavlja optimalno razmerje med vzgonom in uporom.Površina krilaČim večja je površina krila, tem večji vzgon bo nastal. Tlorisne oblikekril so različne. Poznamo pravokotna, trapezna, eliptična krila alikombinacijo naštetih, odvisno od tega, za kakšno letenje se bo letalouporabljalo. Za večino letal se uporabljajo trapezna krila, za letala, kiletijo pri nadzvočnih hitrostih, pa se uporablja delta krilo.Med vzleton in pristankom, ko so hitrosti letala nizke, se vzgon poveča zuporabo aerodinamičnih površin pred krilom in za njim. Pred krilom senahajajo predkrilca, za krilom pa zakrilca. Te aerodinamične površine dajejo12


ADRIA airwaysAerofoils can be thin, medium or thick; thin aerofoils are used for highflying speeds and thicker ones for lower speeds.At the same speed of flying,a thicker aerofoil will generate morelift than a thin one.Since a thickeraerofoil also creates more drag, it is important to select an aerofoil that willprovide an optimum ratio between lift and drag, taking into account theaircraft’s intended use.Wing areaThe larger the wing area, the greater the lift generated. Wing planforms vary.Wings can be rectangular, trapezoidal, elliptical, or a combination of these,depending on what type of flying the aircraft will be used for. Most aircraft usetrapezoidal wings, whereas aircraft flying at supersonic speeds use delta wings.During take-off and landing, when aircraft speeds are low, lift is increased byusing the aerodynamic surfaces at the front and back of the wings. Wings haveslats at the front and flaps at the back. These aerodynamic surfaces give thewing not only a bigger area but also greater curvature and allow the airflow topass the wing correctly even at lower speeds. The deflections of slats and flapsare smaller during take-off and greater during landing.Angle of attackThe angle at which the airflow meets the wing is called the angle of attack.The greater the angle of attack, the greater the lift. However, lift only increasesup to a certain angle of attack and then starts to decrease as the airflowseparates from the wing’s surface and its flow around the wing is disrupted.The angle of attack at which lift is disrupted depends on wing thickness,curvature and depth, and the use of slats and flaps. In the case of disruptedlift, if the aircraft is in level flight it will drop its nose (without any input fromthe pilot) and the angle of attack will decrease, increasing lift. If, on the otherhand, the aircraft is banked to one side, disrupted lift may send it into a spin,which means a steep downward spiral. Passenger planes have a built-insystem which warns of this danger and prevents it from happening.Air densityAir density falls with altitude; it is 1.2 kg per cubic metre at sea level but only0.73 kg per cubic metre at an altitude of 5,000 m. The air is likewise denser ona cold winter day than on a hot summer day. A change in density affects theaircraft’s lift. In the thin air found at the altitudes at which modern planes fly,this kind of reduction in lift must therefore be compensated with speed, inorder to sustain the balance of forces and hence flight.When dealing with the motion of aircraft through the air we should alsomention drag, i.e. the force which decelerates motion and therefore needs tobe overcome with engine power. Drag caused by the shape of an aircraft iscalled form drag, while drag caused by the lift generated on the wing is calledinduced drag (this results from the balancing of pressures at the end of thewing and leaves a swirling trail behind the plane); there is also drag causedby friction between the air and the aircraft. Drag is harmful and the aim is toreduce it to a minimum. This is reflected particularly in fuel consumption andthe aircraft’s flight range.However, at certain stages of a flight, drag is desirable and the pilot will use airbrakes located on the upper surface of the wing. Taiwan-based EVA Air becomesthe 28th carrier to join the global network and the eighth to be based in the Asia-Pacific region. Preizkusni piloti imajo tako običajnokončan magisterij, znanstveniki pa doktorat.Kandidati so ob vstopu v program ponavadi vsrednjih tridesetih, nato pa sledi več let pripravna polet v vesolje. Priprave vključujejo 2-letnosplošno izobraževanje, nato pa 2,5-letnoposebno usposabljanje za polet. V vesolje običajnoprvič poletimo v starosti od 35 do 40 let.Dejavnik, ki ga je treba ob vsem tem upoštevati,je sevanje, ki statistično gledano bolj prizadenemlajše kot starejše. Kateri med njimi ti je bilnajbolj všeč?Verjetno helikopter H-46 s tandemskim rotorjemiz naše flote, še zlasti zato, ker sem v njempreživela veliko časa in ob njem začutila, daje letenje moja prva ljubezen. Razen tega jeletenje z njim zelo zabavno.Astronavti ste z našega vidika predstavnikičloveške vrste v vesolju. Domnevam, da setedaj, ko si enkrat izbran v Nasin programza izobraževanje astronavtov, naporenštudij šele začne. Koliko let traja oziromakoliko izpitov je treba opraviti?Za vstop v program je treba predhodnoštudirati oziroma se nekoliko izobraziti. SamaKatere naloge opravljate med vesoljskimisprehodi?Vesoljski sprehodi so res zanimivi, imam jih zelorada! Zadnjih deset let smo zlasti gradili MVPz montiranjem delov z vsega sveta, ki še nikoliniso bili sestavljeni na tleh. Kljub temu je montažavnaprej načrtovana, izračunana in zasnovana,tako kot vsak dober inženirski projekt. Polegpremikanja teh delov z robotsko roko so moralivesoljski sprehajalci na sprehodih po vesoljupriključiti ustrezne priključke, vključno z velikimipriključki za elektriko in amoniak, ter z velikimiorodji privijačiti dele. V bistvu gre za vesoljskakonstrukcijska dela!Pred kratkim smo morali opraviti določenapopravila, saj se nekatere stvari po daljšem časuv vesolju poškodujejo. Pri popravilih uporabljamoista velika orodja, včasih pa moramo celoizdelati nova. Treba je vedeti, da v vesolju niprodajalne z orodji, in če je treba kaj popraviti,moramo skupaj z našo Nasino ekipo ugotoviti,s čim si v orbiti lahko pomagamo. Tako smomorali med nedavnim vesoljskim sprehodomizdelati orodja za čiščenje ohišij vijakov, kar seje sicer pokazalo kot precejšen izziv, a hkratitudi kot zelo zabaven in zanimiv del nalog, ki jihopravljamo v vesolju!Pogosto občudujemo sončne zahodeosupljivih barv, ki jih spremljajo. Zgorajse zgodijo veliko hitreje. Koliko jih vidite venem dnevu?18

Williams was the guestof <strong>Adria</strong> pilot Andrej RopretV 24 urah vidiš 16 sončnih vzhodov in zahodov.Ob tem sicer ne vidiš vseh, saj del časa v vesoljutudi prespiš. Torej če si pozoren in če imaš oknoodstrto ves čas, bi lahko nenehno opazovalvzhajanje in zahajanje sonca. Astronavti smoobičajno v laboratoriju, naše glavno okno pa jeza vogalom, tako da ne gledamo stalno skozenj.Sicer pa lahko postajo preletiš dokaj hitro.Pravijo, da je zajtrk najpomembnejšidnevni obrok. Kaj pa, če imaš 16 zajtrkov venem dnevu?!Ha ha, 16-krat na dan pa ne jemo. Sicer moramojesti precej redno, ker pa včasih nisemlačna, sem se prisilila jesti 3 obroke na dan. Vvesolju moramo paziti, da ne bi prišlo do izgubekostne gostote in mišične mase, to pa meddrugim dosežemo z redno prehrano. Vesolje niprimeren kraj za izgubljanje odvečnih kilogramov,saj so lahko učinki v obliki izgube kostnegostote nepopravljivi.Na zemlji pred vsakim potovanjem preverimo,ali imamo pri sebi shranjene dovoljvode. Kako pa je s shranjevanjem vode naMVP, saj je nenehno v orbiti? Kako veliki sorezervoarji za vodo?Vodo hranimo v več rezervoarjih. Na ruskistrani sta tako dva rezervoarja za čisto vodo, kijo pripelje oskrbovalno vozilo Progress. Polegtega imamo na ameriški strani rezervoarje zavodo v obliki zbiralnikov kondenzata in vode,ki gre skozi postopek obdelave. To pomeni, dase voda na ameriški strani reciklira, in sicer sezbrane količine kondenzata in urina temeljitofiltrirajo, tako da iz njih dobimo pitno vodo.Poleg tega imamo tudi zaloge vode iz časa SpaceShuttla, ki so shranjene v vrečah. Vesoljskoplovilo Space Shuttle je s spajanjem vodika inkisika pridobivalo elektrone za svoje električnonapajanje, stranski produkt tega spajanja paje bila čista voda, ki se je shranjevala v vrečahna vesoljski postaji, tako da imamo pravzapravprecejšnje zaloge vode po vsej MVP.Draga Sunita, zelo sem užival v prijetnempogovoru s teboj ob jutranji kavi. This timeI guess I was lucky – only the stars knowwhy... And this is no ordinary astronaut:Sunita L. Williams has recently returnedfrom a space mission in which she becameonly the second woman to serve ascommander of the International SpaceStation (ISS). Remarkable, don't you think?All astronauts are pilots who go through anintense selection and training process to becomeastronauts and end their careers as high-rankingcolonels, but deep in their hearts they are stillpilots: ever young, passionate, and turning theirheads at every single aircraft that flies over, whileadmiring the sky.Sunita L. Williams is no different. She is a test pilotwho has flown over 30 different types of aircraftand spent many, many hours in the cockpit,making precise movements of the joystick, merecentimetres every second, but thinking and planningfor the next few miles ahead, and always witha backup plan in case something goes wrong.Sunita, I imagine your love of flying beganin the US Navy. Once you had fallen in love,there was little to stop you from dreaming.Dreaming of flying, dreaming which aftermany hours saw you become the test pilotof many different helicopters. What typedid you enjoy the most?Probably the airplane I flew in the Fleet, whichwas the H-46 tandem-rotor helicopter, mostlybecause I had a lot of time in it and really felt thiswas my first love, flying. It is also a lot of fun to fly.From our perspective, you astronauts arerepresentatives of humankind in space.I imagine the hard work only starts onceyou have been selected for NASA astronauttraining. How many years and exams doesit take?"It takes a little bit of studying and education toget into the programme. Personally, I am prettylucky to be there. And I think everybody who isin the programme feels the same way. How onegets selected is always a sort of a mystery sincethere are so many really great candidates. So, people are usually in their midthirtieswhen they get selected. It takes a numberof years then to prepare for space flight with ageneral course of two years or so, then specificflight training for two and a half more years.We usually fly in space for the first time around35 to 40. Another consideration is radiation. Itaffects younger people more than older people– statistically speaking. So, we don’t want to flysomebody too early for longer duration missions."What tasks do you perform on spacewalks?Spacewalks are interesting, I love them! Forthe past decade we have been putting the ISStogether – putting pieces together from all overthe world that had never been put together onthe ground. However, their assembly had beenplanned, calculated, and designed like any goodengineering project. So in addition to movingthese parts around with a huge crane, therobotic arm, spacewalkers had to go outside todo all the final connections, including large electricaland ammonia connectors as well as usinglarge tools to bolt pieces together. Essentially itis outer space construction work!More recently, we had some “fixes” to do sincesome things break after being in space for awhile. So, we use the same type of large tools tofix stuff, but sometimes we even have to fabricateour own tools. Remember there is no hardwarestore in space, so if something needs a fix, ourNASA team and ourselves have to figure outwhat we have on orbit to get the fix done. Thatwas the story of one of our more recent spacewalkswhere we needed to fabricate bolt housingcleaning tools. Challenging, but again very funand exciting working out in space!We often find ourselves admiring thesunset, with its amazing colours. Sunsetshappen much quicker up there. How manydo you see in one day?In a 24-hour period you see 16 sunrises andsunsets – well you don't see them all the timebecause hopefully you are asleep a part of thattime, too. So if you paid attention and had thewindow open all the time you would be seeingthe sun come up, the sun come down, the suncome up, the sun come down. We are usually inthe laboratory, which is around the corner fromour main window, so we are not always lookingout of the window. It doesn’t take very muchtime to fly around the station.They say that breakfast is the mostimportant meal of the day. And if you have16 mornings a day?Ha-ha! We don’t eat 16 times a day. We do haveto eat pretty regularly though, because sometimesI didn’t feel like eating. I made myself eatthree meals a day. In space we need to worryabout losing bone density and muscle mass,and to mitigate that you eat pretty much on theclock. Space is not a good place for a weight lossprogramme because the effects could be foreverin the way of bone density loss.Before every flight we check whether wehave enough drinking water for the upcomingflights and we refill accordingly. Howis it with water tanks on the ISS, since it isconstantly in orbit? How large are the tanks?We do have storage water in a couple of majortanks. There are a couple tanks on the Russian sidefor clean water brought from the Progress resupplyvehicle. We also have water tanks on the US side inthe form of condensate accumulations and waterthat is in processing. What I mean by that is thatwater on the US side is "recycled". Condensate andurine are recollected and through a very thoroughfiltering process are turned back into useabledrinking water. We also have a stockpile of waterfrom the days of the Space Shuttle. That water isstored in bags. The shuttle made water by combininghydrogen and oxygen for the spare electron itgave off in the chemical combination for shuttleelectrical power. A by-product was pure water,which was given in bags to the space station. Sowe have an excess, we have a storage, a big storageof water throughout the ISS.Dear Sunita, I have very much enjoyed sharingthis conversation and a morning coffeewith you. Kako se dopolnjujeta ekonomija in glasba,gospodarstvo in kultura oziroma kaj vas osebno najboljnavdihuje pri projektu Imago Sloveniae?Kulturni menedžment je v osnovi bolj ekonomsko kot umetniškopodročje. Umetniška produkcija je večplasten proces. Udejanjanjeumetniške vizije je samo del tega procesa, za uspešnost projektaso potrebna tudi znanja s področij organizacije, marketinga,promocije itd.Pri Imagu me najbolj navdihuje samo poslanstvo projekta: širitevvrhunske umetnosti ter povezovanje in ustvarjanje kulturnih potreb.Je mogoče prešteti, koliko koncertov in koncertnih prizoriščse je zvrstilo v času četrtstoletnega delovanja ImagaSloveniae oziroma koliko festivalov (slovenskih in mednarodnih)je danes vključenih v projekt Imago Sloveniae?Ja, statistike so kar impozantne: preko 2000 koncertov, na katerihje nastopilo več kot 10.000 glasbenikov, obiskalo pa jih je več kotmilijon ljudi. Imago Sloveniae je kulturna mreža, ki povezuje 25slovenskih občin in krajev. Zelo dejavni smo tudi na mednarodnempodročju, saj smo povezani s kulturnimi institucijami in festivali iz 43držav, tako z javnimi kot nevladnimi.Kot največja slovenska nevladna kulturna ustanova stesvoje delovanje razširili tudi v mednarodni prostor. Nakakšen način ste zagotovili gostovanja slovenskih glasbenihumetnikov v tujini?Predvsem preko osebnih povezav in partnerskih organizacij v tujini.Slovenska kultura v mednarodnem prostoru še nima mesta, ki si gazasluži. Glede velikega potenciala mladih glasbenikov, ki obiskujejoštudij na najbolj prestižnih akademijah in konservatorijih za glasbopo svetu ali pa so ga že zaključili, še nismo rekli zadnje besede.Vsi naši koncerti po številnih evropskih državah so bili izjemnodobro sprejeti tako pri občinstvu kot pri strokovni javnosti. Rad sespomnim koncerta Marka Hatlaka na Češkem, ki je bil deležen neverjetnih,stoječih ovacij. Klasično koncertno publiko je dobesednošokiral z zahtevnim programom sodobnih skladateljev. Vrhunskiinterpret, ki se identificira z glasbo, ki jo izvaja, vedno prepriča.Kolikšna je ekipa, ki ustvarja Podobe Slovenije oziromanjen zven, in s katerimi najpomembnejšimi organizacijamiin ustanovami doma in v tujini sodelujete?Smo majhna, vendar učinkovita in projektu predana ekipa. Velikonam pomagajo tudi prostovoljci. Imago je odprt projekt, usmerjen vpovezovanje in sodelovanje. Pri oblikovanju programov sodelujemoz vrsto uglednih posameznikov s področja umetnosti in z vsemipomembnejšimi kulturnimi institucijami pri nas, kot so: Slovenskafilharmonija, ljubljanska in mariborska operna hiša, Akademija zaglasbo in Oddelek za muzikologijo Univerze v Ljubljani ipd.Na katere realizirane projekte v času vašega vodenja Ustanoveste najbolj ponosni?Omenil bi dva velika mednarodna projekta: Evropsko glasbenopoletje 2009, s katerim smo bili uspešni tudi na evropskem razpisuKultura in v okviru katerega se je na Češkem, Hrvaškem, v Italiji inSloveniji zvrstilo 59 koncertov, ter veliki koncert leta 2007 v Ljubljani,na katerem je 9. Beethovnovo simfonijo skupaj izvedlo več kot 500instrumentalistov in pevcev iz 7 držav. V času vodenja Ustanovesem uvedel tudi dva nova mednarodna koncertna cikla: Jazz oderin Cikel Mladi talenti, v okviru katerih omogočamo koncertiranjenajboljšim slovenskim in vrhunskim tujim mladim glasbenikom,zmagovalcem različnih tekmovanj. Posebej zanimive so mednarodnekoprodukcije, v katerih sodelujejo glasbeniki iz različnih držav.Katere koncertne izvedbe in kulturni dogodki bodo zaznamovaliletošnji poletni program Imaga Sloveniae?Za nami je zelo uspešen otvoritveni koncert letošnjega Poletja, kije bil posvečen 200-letnici rojstva Verdija in Wagnerja in 25-letniciprojekta Imago Sloveniae; na njem so nastopili solisti ter zbor inorkester SNG Opera in balet Ljubljana z gosti. Do konca avgusta sebo po Sloveniji zvrstilo 46 koncertov, predvsem klasične glasbe, nakaterih se bo predstavilo 493 glasbenikov iz dvajsetih držav. V pripravije še Mednarodni festival Noči v Stari Ljubljani, ki bo letos potekalod 22. do 24. avgusta. Ena od programskih rdečih niti 25. festivala boše posebej aktualna: protestna in revolucionarna glasba.Imago Sloveniae je nepridobitna nevladna ustanova, vsidogodki v njeni organizaciji pa so za občinstvo brezplačni.Kako je s pridobivanjem finančnih sredstev za izvedbovrhunskih umetniških koncertov v časih, ko na svetovnemprizorišču pustoši globalna kriza?Ves čas je težko, tudi ko ni bilo krize. Še vedno pa se najdejo družbenoodgovorna podjetja, ki se zavedajo pomena kulture za prepoznavnostdržave in za vsesplošen, tudi gospodarski razvoj.Kot ekonomistu vam je uspelo Ustanovo Imago Sleveniaefinančno in organizacijsko okrepiti. Andersenovi Malimorski deklici in najbolj zdravemnačinu življenja v Evropi, ampakima še eno posebnost – Christianio.Samoupravno, eksperimentalno insocialno vključujoče »svobodnomesto«. KøbenhavnSimbol mesta je zastava –tri rumene pike na rdečemozadju predstavljajo tripike na i v imenu mesta.Zakaj so izbrali te barve, nitočno znano; govori se, dazato, ker so jih našli v starihvojaških zgradbah.V začetku sedemdesetih let je vKøbenhavnu primanjkovalo cenovno dostopnihstanovanj in mnogi mladi Danciso – pod vtisom grozovitih posnetkovvojne v Vietnamu – sanjali o utopičnemživljenju brez konfliktov. Tako so našli potdo stare vojašnice v središču mesta, kijo je obdajalo bujno zelenje, razprostrtona 34 hektarjev velikem zemljišču. Vse ježe bilo tam: prostori za bivanje, elektrika,sanitarije. Jagode so rasle po bližnjihvrtovih, jezera in kanali, ki ločujejo toobmočje od ostalega Kobenhavna, sobili polni rib. Za mlade idealiste je bil krajpopoln. In rodila se je samoupravna insamozadostna skupnost naseljencev, kije postala sinonim za hipijsko gibanje,kolektivizem in anarhijo. Vse v nasprotjuz disciplinarno vojaško preteklostjo tegaozemlja. »Svobodno mesto« (Fristaden)Christiania je bilo sprva označeno zadružbeni eksperiment, danes ima okrog1000 prebivalcev in čisto poseben status,ki ga je do nedavnega urejal tudi lastenzakon, »Zakon Christianie« iz leta 1989.Osnovni princip, na katerem delujeChristiania, je zavračanje zasebnegalastništva in tržne ekonomije, prednostpa daje kolektivnim pravicam. Pravilabivanja določajo stanovalci s konsenzomna skupnih zborih. Poleg danskekrone je uradna valuta løn. Domačiniprejemajo plačo v lønih in kovanci selahko uporabljajo po vsem mestu. Valutoso uvedli leta 1997, še prej so uporabljalifed (ki v danskem slengu pomeni joint,v dobesednem prevodu pa »maščoba«).Konoplja je namreč ves čas odkrito vprodaji, prepovedani pa so orožje, trdedroge in kakršne koli oznake, ki izražajopripadnost posameznim skupinam.36


KøbenhavnZaradi posebnega statusa Christanie tu neveljajo danski zakoni o prepovedi kajenja najavnih mestih. Dovoljeno je kaditi na delovnemmestu, v restavracijah, barih in klubih. Cigareteseveda. Marihuana je še vedno prepovedana,a tolerirana. Po glavni ulici, imenovani Pusherstreet, se vije vonj po njej in vsaj na ducatustojnic je moč kupiti različne vrste marihuane,tudi take, že zvite v joint. Na nekaterih sicer boljza šalo kot zares piše: Kajenje ubija!Prav tako je prepovedana vožnja z avtomobili.Zato pa je Christiania znana po kolesih. Največje tistih, kjer je na sprednjem delu pritrjen večjizaboj, v katerih prevažajo otroke ali tovor.Prebivalci Christianie plačujejo danski državidavke za vodo, elektriko in odvoz odpadkov,njihovi otroci hodijo v javne šole, in če zagori,je gasilcem dovoljeno vstopiti na območje. Neplačujejo pa davkov na nepremičnine. Državajim že 15 let ne dovoli gradnje novih stavb.Mesto je barvito. Stavbe so okrašene, pobarvaneali polne grafitov, vrtovi so pisani. Tu najdemotemplje in tempeljčke različnih verstevin lokale, kjer vam, medtem ko sedite na WC-junad glavo plavajo zlate ribice. Hiše ob jezeruso zgradili prebivalci sami, konstrukcije pa ponazarjajomoderno »arhitekturo brez arhitektov«s poudarkom na trajnosti in ekologiji.In kdo živi v Christianii? V nasprotju s prepričanjemmnogih, tukaj svojih hišk niso zgradili lehipiji in preprodajalci marihuane, ampak tudiuniverzitetni profesorji, direktorji, filozofi in priznaniumetniki. Prebivalci Christianie prijaznosprejemajo radovedne turiste, ki jih je poletitudi do 10.000 na dan.Christiania je vir kontroverznosti vse od svojeganastanka leta 1971. Vlada je skušala mnogokratneuspešno »normalizirati« svobodno mesto.Vir konfliktov med komuno in oblastjo so tudištevilni ukrepi za ureditev pravnega statusa skupnosti.Vrhovno sodišče je nedavno odločilo, daozemlje komune pripada državi, a so prebivalcikolektivno, z donacijami in krediti, uspeli plačatiprvi obrok (51.800.000 DKK od 76.200.000 DKK)za odkup ozemlja. Od julija letos morajo živetiv skladu z danskimi zakoni. Zakon Christianieiz leta 1989 je postal preteklost. Vseeno pa novizakon dovoljuje »živeti na svoji zemlji in ohranitiidentiteto svobodnega mesta«, čeprav še vednoobstajajo nekateri nerešeni problemi, kot naprimer tisti o zakonitosti gradnje številnih stavb.Kaže, da so nemirni časi mimo in da bo svobodnomesto končno postalo legalno; upajmopa, da s tem ne bo izgubilo svoje posebnosti.Ko zapuščate ta izjemni kraj, vas na to opozorinapis »Sedaj vstopate v območje EU«. Izvirno,bi rekli nekateri, drugi pa, da je to popolnomanepotrebno, saj je »meja« več kot očitna.37

For some it is a jungle in the centre of Copenhagen,for others a bastion of disrespect, but for many it is the most democratic settlement in the world.In the early 1970s there was a lack of affordablehousing and many young Danes – withthe horrible images of the war in Vietnam intheir heads – dreamed of a utopian life withoutconflict. They found an old military barracksin the centre of town, with lush greenery on34 hectares of land. Everything was alreadythere: places to live, electricity, bathrooms.Strawberries grew in the nearby gardens, andthe lakes and canals which separate the areafrom the rest of Copenhagen were full of fish.It was the perfect place for young idealists.A self-governing and self-sufficient group ofresidents evolved, which became synonymouswith the hippie movement, collectivism andanarchism. All of this was directly in contrastto the area’s military past. “Freetown Christiania”was first labelled a social experiment,but today it has around 1,000 residents and acompletely unique status which until recentlywas regulated by a special law, the ChristianiaLaw of 1989.The basic principle on which Christiania operatesis the rejection of private ownership and themarket economy, and priority is given to collectiverights. The rules for residence are determined byresidents by consensus at community meetings. Inaddition to the Danish Krone, the official currencyof Christiania is the Løn. Residents receive paymentin Løns and the coins can be used throughout thetown. The currency was introduced in 1997; beforethat they had used the Fed (Danish slang for joint;the literal meaning is “fat”). Cannabis is sold openlyat all times, while weapons, hard drugs and anyinsignia which indicate membership of individualgroups are prohibited.Owing to Christiania’s special status, Danish lawsprohibiting smoking in public do not apply here.Smoking is permitted in workplaces, restaurants,bars and clubs. Cigarettes, that is! Marijuana isstill prohibited, but tolerated. You can detect itssmell everywhere along the main street, PusherStreet, and various forms of cannabis can bepurchased at the dozen stalls, including alreadyrolledjoints. Some of the stalls have signs whichhumorously warn: Smoking kills!Cars are also prohibited, so Christiania is knownfor its bicycles. The most popular are “Christianiabikes”, with a large box in front to carrychildren or cargo.Christiania residents pay the Danish statefor water, electricity and waste removal, theirchildren attend public schools, and if there is afire, firefighters are allowed access to the area.However, they do not pay property taxes. Thestate has not allowed them to construct any newbuildings for 15 years.The town is very colourful. The buildings are decorated,painted in vibrant colours or covered withgraffiti, and the gardens are flourishing. There aretemples and shrines from various religions, andpubs where you can watch goldfish swimming38

The reasonbehind the choice ofcolours is not clear, butlegend has it that lots ofcans of paint in these twocolours were found in theold military buildings…Copenhagenabove you while you are sitting in the WC. The housesalong the lake were built by the residents themselves,and the designs exemplify modern “architecturewithout architects”, with an emphasis on sustainabilityand ecology.So who lives in Christiania? Contrary to many people’sbeliefs, Christiania’s residents are not all hippies anddope dealers, but include university professors, businesspeople,philosophers and well-known artists. Allare happy to welcome curious tourists, who during thesummer months can number up to 10,000 a day.Christiania has been a source of controversy since itsfounding in 1971. The government has attempted to“normalise” the free town on several occasions, alwaysunsuccessfully. One of the sources of conflict betweenthe community and the authorities are the numerousmeasures intended to regulate the community’s legalstatus. The Danish Supreme Court recently ruled thatthe community’s land belongs to the state, but theresidents collectively, through donations and loans,managed to pay the first instalment (51,800,000 of atotal 76,200,000 kroner – or nearly 7 million of a total10 million euros) to purchase the land. From July ofthis year on they will have to live in accordance withDanish law. The Christiania Law of 1989 has becomea page in history. The new law does, however, allowthem to “live on their own land and maintain theidentity of the free town,” although there are stillseveral unresolved problems, such as the legality of theconstruction of numerous buildings.It appears that the troubled times are over and thatthe free town will finally become legal; we only hopethat in doing so it will not lose its special quality. Asyou leave this exceptional place, a sign tells you “Youare now entering the EU”. Very original, some mightsay, while others would say totally unnecessary, as the“border” is more than obvious.39


taste slovenia'Why is our nose justabove our mouth?'text: prof. janez bogataj, PhdThe question contained in the title of this article was posed by the Slovene poet, translator and linguist Valentin Vodnik (born 3February 1758, Ljubljana), who was a prominent figure of the Enlightenment. Vodnik trained as a priest, but two years after taking uphis ministry he left the clergy and became a teacher at the Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana. It was at this time that he published hisKuharske bukve, printed in Ljubljana in 1799. Vodnik's Kuharske bukve was the first cookery book published in the Slovene language.The eighteenth century brought significant social changes to Europe. The ideasof the Enlightenment gradually created favourable conditions for a growth innational awareness among some members of the Slovene nation. The numberof books published multiplied and new knowledge became available infields such as health, agriculture, language and, last but not least, cooking.Until the middle of the eighteenth century, cookery books and manuals hadmainly been aimed at professional cooks. Vodnik's cookery book, containing300 recipes for the most part translated from contemporary cookery books inGerman, is important above all for its extremely interesting introduction andfor its use of Slovene culinary terminology. The latter provides evidence of thelevel of development of culinary culture in Slovenia in the second half of theeighteenth century. Vodnik's choices of words and terms are not always entirelyfelicitous, but such cases are very few in number. The book as a whole isproof that Slovene cuisine at the end of the eighteenth century was fully com-parable, at least in terms of its linguistic richness, to the cuisines of other partsof Europe. The recipes do not include instructions for the preparation of dishesthat were widely enjoyed in Vodnik's time. The book is not, then, a snapshotof food culture in the second half of the eighteenth century. In the spirit of theEnlightenment, Vodnik's aim was also to shed light on the science of cooking,which meant teaching about new dishes and, above all, about a correctand healthy diet. This is most apparent in his relativelylengthy introduction, which is still highly relevant today,since it contains views on subjects such as healthyeating and food hygiene. The introduction covers threethematic areas: understanding cooking, the questionof healthy food and, most important, the issue of Sloveneculinary terminology. Vodnik emphasises that thepurpose of cooking is to maintain health, since 'food ismedicine for the healthy'. All the ingredients from whichdishes are made must be healthy, as must the methodsof cooking. Other ideas set out in the introduction readalmost as though someone had written them today,and thoroughly contradict the assessments of somecontemporary writers with regard to the unsuitability ofVodnik's cookery book. Particularly if we evaluate it fromthe point of view of the period in which it was writtenand the conditions of the time. Vodnik says that 'sensiblecooks avoid using excess fat, grease, lard, bacon,pork and dried meat. Rancid and spoilt food shouldbe thrown away and warmed-up food should not beserved. Cooks should not use copper or tin pans becausethey contain too much lead. Earthenware and ironcooking vessels are to be preferred. Dishes should be appetisingand well prepared, so as to recommend themselvesnot only to the palate but also to the stomach.'The book is divided into 22 chapters and contains 51 setsof instructions or recipes for the use of vegetables in cooking, and 30 recipes forvarious kinds of jellies, along with instructions on preserving fruit in sugar. Thelatter is linked to Vodnik's educational aim of providing people with more waysto preserve food for the winter. Next in terms of number are 23 recipes for boiled,stewed and stuffed meat and poultry dishes and 20 recipes for fish dishes, whichalso includes snails, frogs and turtle. The book only contains one recipe for a hotpotor stew, which is no surprise given that such dishes were among the mostcommon in Slovenia at that time.41

Ko se je pred 114 leti v beneških vrtovih rodil prvi dveletni koncept umetniških predstavitev, jemalokdo predvideval tako razširjen bienalski pregled različnih ustvarjalnosti. Način predstavljanja je že takoj uveljavilučinkovito zlivanje umetnosti z vsemi ostalimi sferami življenja. Če želi bienale živeti s prostorom, iz katerega izhaja,se mora povezati z vsemi porami življenja. Umetnost mora podajati roko gospodarstvu, politiki, diplomaciji, podjetništvuin vsem drugim. Poučeni pravijo, da lahko tovrstne dveletne predstavitve pomagajo na novo oblikovati principe družbe, vkateri bi radi živeli.Ljubljanski grafični bienale bo letos obhajal svojo trideseto izdajo.Prireditev sodi med pomembnejše in bolj prepoznavne dogodkeslovenskega glavnega mesta. Letošnja prireditev, ki bo potekala med14. septembrom in 24. novembrom, se bo dogajala po vsem mestu.Klasičnim prizoriščem, kot so Grad Tivoli, Moderna galerija in Muzejsodobne umetnosti ter Jakopičevo razstavišče, se bodo letos pridružiliše Cankarjev dom, Galerija Kresija, Ljubljanski grad in druga razstavišča.Letošnja jubilejna predstavitev bo potekala pod kuratorskim izboromdr. Deborah Cullen, direktorice in glavne kustosinje galerije Miriam andIra D. Wallach na Columbia University v New Yorku. Osrednja razstavaInterruption – Prekinitev izpostavlja vidike razvoja, ki ga področje grafikedoživlja v sodobnem času. Nekaterim grafičnim tehnikam je uspeloohraniti pomen, druge so zamrle. Stari in novi mediji pa se, tako kotvečina sodobne umetnosti, ukvarjajo s komentiranjem sveta in razmer,v katerih živimo, skozi posebnosti in zgodbe. Tudi zato ostaja premisleko vlogi grafike bolj in bolj aktualen.ZgodovinaOkrogla obletnica narekuje tudi pogled v zgodovino. Začetek Bienala predstavljaI. mednarodna grafična razstava v Moderni galeriji leta 1955. Rodila seje v nekdanji skupni državi, ki se je z razstavo želela demokratizirati, odpretiin popraviti svoj ugled. Najprej je nastala v glavah Božidarja Jakca in ZoranaKržišnika, kasneje sta zamisel v Parizu in Trstu podprla še Lojze Spacal inZoran Mušič. Jakac, priznani grafik in partizanski umetnik, je po ogledu eneod podobnih razstav v Italiji predlagal pripravo pregleda svetovne grafičneustvarjalnosti v Ljubljani. Kržišnik, takrat kustos v ljubljanski Moderni galeriji,je ob obisku Mušiča v Parizu mimo uradnih poti pridobil za razstavo skorajcelotno Pariško grafično šolo s Pablom Picassom na čelu. Na prvi bienalnirazstavi je sodelovalo 25 držav z vzhoda in zahoda Evrope, Sovjetske zvezein ZDA, Japonske in južne Afrike, umetniki pa so predstavili skoraj 700grafik. To je bila hkrati tudi prva mednarodna razstava, ki jo je organiziralaModerna galerija v Ljubljani, verjetno pa tudi prva v takratni državi. grafični bienaleI. mednarodna grafična razstava v Moderni galeriji je dve leti kasnejeprerasla v Bienale mednarodne grafike. Grafična umetnost je takrat poosebljalavečino jugoslovanskih vrednot. Bila je demokratična, množična,dostopna in moderna. Razmnoževanje grafik, od katerih je vsaka enakaoriginalu, predvsem pa njena sočasnost s svetovnimi tokovi sta jo narediladražljivo in dostopno. Odpiranje prostora sodobni umetnosti je šlo vkorak s takratno neopredeljeno, a aktivno protiblokovsko politiko, politikoneuvrščenosti. Naklonjenost uradnih struktur in izjemna organizacijska terlobistična spretnost štirih ustanoviteljev, na čelu s Kržišnikom, je Bienaluna široko odpirala vrata v vse pore takratnega družbenega življenja. Sprvaplaha podjetja in ustanove se niso branili prevzemati podpore prireditvi,največkrat v obliki nagrad pa tudi popustov na železnicah, če je kupecpredložil »bienalsko« vstopnico. Prireditev ni pozabila na obiskovalce.Izjemno delo so naredili predavatelji in vodstva po razstavi s poučevanjem,primerjavami in komentiranjem razstave. V tujini pa so cenili predvsemkakovost izbora in nagrad, nad katerimi je bdela pazljivo izbrana in pravilnouglašena mednarodna žirija. Takratni čas je bil čas, ko je bilo še vse mogočein se je z lahkoto in lepoto videlo daleč naprej.Seveda sta odločilno podporo prispevali uradna kulturna in umetniškausmeritev pa tudi takratna visoka politika. Ne samo, da so pot v bienalskarazstavišča našli visoki uradni predstavniki držav, ki so bili tudi pokrovitelji;razstave si je ogledovalo kar nekaj predsednikov vlad, parlamentovin držav. Leta 1957 je bilo na ljubljanskem bienalskem razstavišču meddrugim moč najti tako prodorna umetniška imena, kot so Picasso, Miro,Chagall, Arp, Hartung, Marini, Clave ali recimo Zadkine. Že tretji Bienaleleta 1959 pa je javno pohvalil tudi predsednik Jugoslavije Josip Broz Tito,ki je takrat prostodušno naznanil svojim narodom: »Sijajno je to, da jeprišlo do srečanja umetnikov iz vsega sveta. Uveljavljajo se nove struje, kipa jih ne razumem povsem. Bliže mi je tisto, kar slika Jakac.«Spreminjala pa so se tudi druga razmerja. V šestdesetih je grafična umetnostpostajala bolj in bolj zanimiva za trg. Roberta Rauschenberga, znamenitegapopartista je recimo – še pred uradno izstrelitvijo v svetovno tržno orbito zveliko nagrado Beneškega bienala – nagradil prav ljubljanski bienale. Leta2008 umrli umetnik, katerega dela danes dosegajo astronomske šestmestneštevilke, je Ljubljano navajal kot začetno točko svojega uspeha.Seveda je Ljubljanski mednarodni grafični bienale prispeval tudi k uveljavititakratnih domačih umetnikov. Spacal, Mušič, Stupica, Veličković,Bernik, Picelj in številni drugi so svoj kamenček v mozaiku uspehaizklesali tudi s pomočjo ljubljanskih predstavitev. Jože Brumen, ljubljanskioblikovalec, je eno izmed del izvrstnega hrvaškega grafika Ivana Picljapredelal v logotip, ki ga Bienale uporablja še danes.Spregledati pa ne gre tudi izjemnega vpliva ljubljanske prireditve na odpiranjenovih podobnih prireditev po vsem svetu. Tokio 1965, Grenchen1958, Krakov 1966, Firence 1968, Bradford 1970 in Fredrikstadt 1972 sosamo nekatera mesta, katerih prireditve so bile spodbujene tudi s straniLjubljanskega grafičnega bienala. Zgodovinskemu pregledu bo letosposvečena posebna razstava v Cankarjevem domu z naslovom »Grafičnibienale – z vami od leta 1955.«JubilejIn letos? Že v začetku avgusta se bo z bienalsko vsebino odprla Plečnikovapromenada oz. Jakopičevo sprehajališče v Tivoliju. V Galeriji Kresija se bopredstavila Mirojeva fundacija z Majorke z zanimivim izborom Mirojevihgrafik. Na odprtih površinah v Ljubljani pa se bodo s svojimi usmeritvamipoleg Ljubljane predstavila še tri bienalna mesta, Contour Mechelen iz Belgije,Liverpool iz Velike Britanije in Göteborg iz Švedske. Na Ljubljanskemgradu bo predstavitev del ameriškega umetnika Roberta Morrisa.Osrednja prireditev Prekinitev – Interruption pa bo ogledovalcemna voljo v Gradu Tivoli, Moderni galeriji, Muzeju sodobne umetnosti naMetelkovi in Jakopičevem razstavišču.O tesnih vezeh politike in bienala priča tudi anekdota nekdanjega italijanskegapremiera Amintora Fanfanija, ki je prišel na ogled Bienala z namero,da s Titom naveže osebni stik. Kljub različnim političnim pogledom jetakrat prevladovalo prepričanje, da sodelovanje in razviti medosebniodnosi med politiki odpirajo obzorja in spreminjajo pomembne odločitve.Razvejan in dobro naoljen organizacijski stroj takratnih prireditev jeFanfaniju omogočil srečanje s Titom. Fanfani, sam ljubiteljski slikar, je Kržišnika»prepričal« tudi s svojo umetnostjo. Na njegovo povabilo je takratnikrščanskodemokratski predsednik italijanske vlade razstavljal na aktualnemBienalu. Vse to samo potrjuje vpetost prireditve v aktualne tokove.Seveda ni vse potekalo brez težav. Ena velikih je bila povezana z uveljavljanjemmodernosti. Tretji bienale je namreč na stežaj odprl vrata tudiabstraktni umetnosti. To pa je mnoge motilo. Znano je bilo stališče NikiteHruščova, tedanjega predsednika Sovjetske zveze, da je abstrakcija nekaj,kar lahko osel z repom naslika. Kljub temu je Grafični bienale bolj in boljpostajal most med obema blokoma. Uradno so z Vzhoda prihajale samorealistične podobe, vendar so razstavljali tudi abstraktni umetniki iz tehkrajev. V Ljubljano so prihajali po skrivnih kanalih prek Rige. Zanimivoje, da se uradna sovjetska politika ni nikoli obregnila ob bienalski izborsodobnih sovjetskih umetnikov. Na Zahodu je prireditev pridobivala nateži s sodelovanjem uglednih kuratorjev.Osrednja prireditev Prekinitev – Interruption pa bo ogledovalcem navoljo v Gradu Tivoli, Moderni galeriji, Muzeju sodobne umetnosti naMetelkovi in Jakopičevem razstavišču.Kot pravi kuratorica dr. Deborah Cullen, gre letos za izbor dvainštiridesetihumetnikov iz vsega sveta. Izbrana dela je vključila v prireditev kotodmev ali komentarje na življenjske pogoje v svetu. »Hiperaktivnostteksta ali slike moleduje za našo pozornost. Medtem ko se nekateri umetnikiodzovejo z vrnitvijo v primarne oblike reprodukcije, kot so ogenj,sence, tetovaže in streli, se drugi vržejo v objem naključnosti socialnihmedijev, brezkončnosti vladnih dokumentov, kratkosti haikuja ali hitrostitwitterja,« je zapisala v enem od spremnih besedil.Kakor se dogaja na vseh sodobnih bienalih, je tudi jubilejni ljubljanskinapolnjen s posameznimi zgodba in citati, ki jih ni več mogoče zaobjetisamo s pogledom, pa naj gre za »Grafit svobode – s Poljubom GustavaKlimta« sirskega umetnika Tammama Azzama ali pa za multimedijskoinstalacijo z naslovom »Untitled« Ivana Marušića Klifa. V vsakem primeruspet izjemno zanimiva prireditev v Ljubljani, ki jo bo ves čas dopolnjevalamnožica spremljajočih dogodkov.44

When the concept of an art exhibition to be held on a two-yearly basis was put intoeffect for the first time in Venice's Giardini 114 years ago, few people can have imagined how widespread this biennialapproach to the presentation of artistic creativity of various kinds would become. This form of presentationimmediately established an effective fusion of art with all other spheres of life. If a biennial exhibition wishes tocoexist with the space from which it derives, it must connect with every pore of life. Art must extend a hand toeconomics, politics, diplomacy, enterprise and all other spheres. Those who understand these things say that twoyearlypresentations of this kind can help reshape the principles of the society in which we would like to live.The Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts celebrates its thirtiethedition this year. The Biennial is one of the most importantand high-profile events to be held in Slovenia's capital. Thisyear's jubilee edition, which takes place between 14 Septemberand 24 November, involves a variety of locations across thecity. Traditional venues such as Tivoli Castle, the Museumof Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art and theJakopič Gallery are this year joined by Cankarjev Dom, theKresija Gallery, Ljubljana Castle and other exhibition spaces.The 30th Biennial is curated by Deborah Cullen, director andchief curator of the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery atColumbia University in New York. The main exhibition, entitledInterruption, highlights aspects of the evolution of graphicarts in the modern age. Some printmaking techniques haveretained their importance, while others have died out. Oldand new media, like the majority of contemporary art, providea commentary on the world and the conditions we live in,through their own distinct characteristics and the stories theytell us. This is another reason why consideration of the role ofgraphic arts is becoming increasingly topical.HistoryA significant anniversary is also a moment to look back. The Biennial hasits origins in the 1st International Exhibition of Graphic Art, held at the Museumof Modern Art in 1955. The context of this exhibition was a Yugoslaviathat was attempting to democratise itself, open itself to the outside worldand repair its reputation. The idea was originally suggested by BožidarJakac and Zoran Kržišnik and later found support in Paris and Trieste fromLojze Spacal and Zoran Mušič. Jakac, a well-known printmaker and formerPartisan artist, proposed the organisation of a review of world graphic artsin Ljubljana after visiting a similar exhibition in Italy. Kržišnik, then a curatorat the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, visited Mušič in Paris and,bypassing official channels, secured for the exhibition a selection of worksby almost all the key members of the École de Paris, with Picasso foremostamong them. Twenty-five countries from Eastern and Western Europe,the Soviet Union, the USA, Japan and South Africa took part in the firstBiennial, with artists presenting a total of almost 700 prints. At the sametime this was the first international exhibition organised by the Museumof Modern Art in Ljubljana, and probably the first in the Yugoslavia of thetime. The exhibition attracted enormous attention because it opened upa space to Eastern and Western artists and at the same time became themost important point of intersection of global trends in graphic art.46


the biennial of graphic artsTwo years later, the 1st International Exhibition of Graphic Arts at the Museumof Modern Art became the Biennial. In that period graphic arts represented themajority of Yugoslav values. They were democratic, produced on a mass scale,accessible and modern. The reproduction of prints, each of which is identical tothe original, and above all a synchrony with global trends, made graphic artsexciting and accessible. The process of opening up a space to contemporaryart was entirely in step with the as yet undefined but already active anti-blocpolicy, the policy of non-alignment. The support of official structures and theoutstanding organisational and lobbying skills of the four founders, headedby Kržišnik, opened the doors for the Biennial into every sphere of the life ofsociety. Initially doubtful enterprises and institutions were persuaded to supportthe event, in most cases by providing prizes but also by offering discounts onrailway travel on submission of a Biennial ticket. The event did not overlookthe visitors either. A remarkable job was done by guest speakers and exhibitionguides, who provided information, comparisons and commentaries on theexhibition. Visitors from abroad were impressed above all by the quality of theselection and the prizes, watched over by a carefully chosen and well-balancedinternational jury. It was a time when everything was still possible and it waseasy to predict a long and beautiful future.Decisive support was of course contributed by official culture and art, but alsoby the highest echelons of politics. Not only did high official representatives ofother states – who also acted as patrons – find their way to the Biennial exhibitionspaces; the exhibition was also viewed by heads of government, presidentsof parliaments and heads of state. Among the notable names present at the1957 Ljubljana Biennial were Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Arp, Hartung, Marini, Clavéand Zadkine. The third Biennial, in 1959, was publicly praised by Marshal Tito,the president of Yugoslavia, who made the following frank announcement:'It is magnificent that this meeting of artists from all over the world has comeabout. New movements are establishing themselves, which I do not fullyunderstand. My taste lies more in the direction of what Jakac paints.'Other circumstances were also changing. In the 1960s graphic arts werebecoming increasingly attractive to the market. The famous pop artistRobert Rauschenberg, for example, won a prize at the Ljubljana Biennialbefore his Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale officially launched him intothe global commercial orbit. Rauschenberg, who died in 2008 and whoseworks today command astronomical six-figure sums, called Ljubljana thestarting point of his success.The Ljubljana International Biennial of Graphic Arts has also contributedto establishing many domestic artists. Spacal, Mušič, Stupica, Veličković,Bernik, Picelj and many others cut their own tiles in the mosaic of successwith the help of the Ljubljana exhibitions. The Ljubljana-based designerJože Brumen transformed a work by the outstanding Croatian graphic artistIvan Picelj into the logo that is still used by the Biennial today.Neither should we overlook the extraordinary influence of the Ljubljanaexhibition on new, similar events around the world. Tokyo (1965), Grenchen(1958), Krakow (1966), Florence (1968), Bradford (1970) and Fredrikstad(1972) are just some of the cities whose events were partly inspired by theLjubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts. This year a special exhibition at CankarjevDom entitled 'The Biennial of Graphic Arts – With You Since 1955' willprovide a historical overview of the event.The jubileeAnd this year? At the beginning of August the Plečnik Promenade/ JakopičPromenade in Tivoli Park will be filled with Biennial-related content. TheFundació Pilar i Joan Miró in Mallorca will present an interesting selectionof Miró's prints at the Kresija Gallery. Three other biennial cities – Mechelen,home of Contour, the Biennial of the Moving Image (Belgium), Liverpool(United Kingdom) and Gothenburg (Sweden) – will present their differentfocuses in open spaces around Ljubljana. Ljubljana Castle will host aThe main event – 'Interruption' – will be on view at Tivoli Castle, theMuseum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art on Metelkovaand the Jakopič Gallery.Further evidence of the close ties between politics and the Biennial comes withthe story of the Italian prime minister Amintore Fanfani, who came to the Biennialin order to forge personal ties with Tito. Despite the differences in politicalviews, the belief prevailed at the time that cooperation and well-developedpersonal relationships between politicians could open horizons and influenceimportant decisions. The extensive and well-oiled organisation behind theevents of that period facilitated Fanfani's meeting with Tito. Fanfani, himself anamateur painter, also 'convinced' Kržišnik with his art. At the latter's invitation,the Christian Democrat prime minister of Italy exhibited at the Biennial. All thismerely confirms the position of the event in the currents of the time.Naturally things did not always run smoothly. One major difficulty was linkedto the rise of modern trends. The third Biennial in fact threw the doors opento abstract art. This was something that disturbed many people. The viewof Nikita Khrushchev, then leader of the Soviet Union, that 'a donkey couldsmear better art with its tail' was well known. Nevertheless the Biennial increasinglybecame a bridge between the two competing blocs. Officially, onlysocialist realist images came from the Eastern Bloc, but abstract artists fromthese countries also exhibited. They reached Ljubljana by secret channels viaRiga. Interestingly, official Soviet policy never took offence at the Biennial'sselection of contemporary Soviet artists. In the West, the event gained weightthrough the collaboration of distinguished curators.presentation of works by the American artist Robert Morris.The main event – 'Interruption' – will be on view at Tivoli Castle, the Museumof Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art on Metelkova andthe Jakopič Gallery.Curator Deborah Cullen explains that this year's Biennial involves a selectionof 42 artists from all over the world. The selected works have beenincluded in the event as an echo of or comment on the conditions of theworld in which we live: 'The hyperactivity of text or image begs for ourattention. While some artists respond by returning to basic, even primalforms of image reproduction (fire, shadows, tattoos, gunshots), othersembrace the randomness of social media picture boards, endless streamsof leaked government documents, or the brief haikus of the Twittersphere'.Like all contemporary biennials, this jubilee edition of the Ljubljana Biennialis full of individual stories and quotations that can no longer be embracedmerely by the gaze, whether it is Freedom Graffiti – with Gustav Klimt'sThe Kiss by the Syrian artist Tammam Azzam, or the multimedia installationentitled Untitled by Ivan Marušić Klif. In any case, another enormouslyinteresting event in Ljubljana, which will be complemented throughout itsduration by a wealth of accompanying events.47

Do te malce zaspane, a vsekakor izjemno slikovite turističnedestinacije nas loči le dobra ura vožnje iz Ljubljane in kaj hitro lahkobeton in pločevino zamenjamo z razgledom na čarobno Bohinjsko jezero,ki se ob vsakem letnem času postavlja s kristalno čisto temno modroin smaragdno zeleno vodo, ujeto v krasne kulise vršacev. Hkrati se tu niti za trenutekne moreš znebiti občutka, da si se znašel na skrivnostnem kraju, kjer tiše veter skuša prišepniti kakšno izmed številnih bohinjskih bajk. Mordaje prav ta usodna kombinacija mistike, naravne lepote in miru prepričalanajslavnejšo obiskovalko Bohinja, da se je pred več kot štiridesetimi letisem odpravila na dopust.49


ohinjPrispe kraljica zločinaŽe skoraj 80 let se šarmanten hotel Bellevue ponaša z najlepšim razgledomv Bohinju. Na vzpetini in skrit med drevesi nudi ogromno zasebnosti,a hkrati lahko od tam oko gosta zajame vso izzivalno očarljivost bohinjskegakota. Nič nenavadnega torej, da je leta 1967 v ta hotel inkognito prispelna dvotedenske počitnice prijazen angleški par z imenom Mallowan. Zadržana,že malce priletna gospa in njen uglajeni mož sta hrepenela po miru.A ta je bil hitro skaljen, ko se je razvedelo, kdo pravzaprav sta – AgathaChristie, najslavnejša pisateljica kriminalk (avtorica več kot 80 romanov,prevedenih v 103 jezike!), ki je poleg Shakespearja najbolj prodajana avtoricana svetu, in njen mož Max Mallowan. Odločna, tako kot njeni detektivi,si je Agatha sama izbrala sobo 204 z najlepšim razgledom in ta soba ješe danes uradno njena, opremljena tako kot v času njenega obiska, in naogled obiskovalcem. Za vse ljubitelje detektivk je v hotelu tudi impresivnaknjižnica s pisalnim strojem iz Agathinega časa in številnimi njenimi knjigami,ki so jih skozi leta v hotelu pridobili kar s časopisnim oglasom. Vsekakorvredna obiska, a kot veliko oboževalko Agathe Christie me je predvsemzanimalo, kakšna je bila ta genialna gospa in kaj je počela v Bohinju. Zatosem poiskala tiste, ki so jo med njenim obiskom uspeli tudi malo pobližjespoznati. Upam, da bi bila Agatha vesela mojih detektivskih sposobnosti.Po sledeh Agathe ChristieKot prvega na svojem seznamu osumljencev izprašam simpatičnega inživahnega gospoda Stojka Žmitka, ki je bil v času Agathinega obiska njenosebni šofer. »Kako vam je to uspelo?« želim najprej izvedeti. »Ah, pravzapravbolj po naključju. Agatha kot zavedna Britanka ni želela nemškegaavtomobila, zato je prišel v poštev le moj zeleni karavan peugeot 404,«mi zaupa Stojko, ki se je sicer takrat ukvarjal z izposojo čolnov in mušofersko delo ni prav nič dišalo, a Agathi Christie pač ne rečeš ne.Tako je s prijetnim in tihim parom, kot sam opiše Agatho in njenegamoža, preživel dobra dva tedna in jima poleg Bohinja pokazal še številnedruge lepote Slovenije. Ob neki priložnosti je Agatha Stojku omenila,da bi rada poskusila domačo bohinjsko hrano, zato jo je zapeljal naKoprivnik v gostilno Korošic, kjer se je prestrašen oštir ob njenem obiskule prijel za glavo, saj za tako pomembno gostjo ni imel mesa, a preprostaAgatha je bila več kot navdušena tudi nad žganci in kislim mlekom. »Da,bila je skromna, točna, plačevala je pošteno in vedno povabila tudi menena kosilo. Prava dama!« še doda Stojko.V lepem spominu sta jo ohranili tudi nekdanji receptorki hotela Bellevue.Gospa Nada Urbanc, tedaj komaj 17-letni deklič, se spominja, da Agathani bila posebno zahtevna gostja; poleg šoferja si je ob svojem prihoduzaželela le pleten stol, ki so ga zanjo iskali po vsem Bohinju. »Ure in ure jepreživela v tem stolu, po angleško pila čaj in si nekaj zapisovala v beležnico.50


“Too lovelyfor a murder”TEXT and photographs: saša suhadolnikEvery time I visit Bohinj, I feel a rush of satisfaction and pridethat my home is here in Slovenia, just a stone's throw fromthis jewel of nature. A little over an hour’s drive is all thatseparates Ljubljana from this somewhat sleepy yet nonethelessexceptionally picturesque tourist destination; just like that,concrete and chrome have been replaced by a view of magicalLake Bohinj and its waters – clear, deep blue, emerald green andframed against a breathtaking backdrop of mountain peaks inevery season. Bohinj is a synonym for tranquillity. There you canfeel reborn with the brush of a paddle upon the tear-like dropletsof the lake’s water, with an ascent of the inviting mountain peaksof blinding white stone, or as your bike winds its way throughblooming fields and green pastures. Yet at the same time, youcannot for so much as a second shake the feeling that you havefound yourself in a mysterious place, where even the wind istrying to whisper in your ear one of Bohinj’s many fairy talesor legends. Perhaps it is this fateful combination of mysticism,natural beauty and tranquillity that convinced Bohinj’s mostfamous visitor to come here on holiday over 40 years ago.The queen of murder arrivesFor nearly 80 years, the charming Hotel Bellevue has boasted the most beautifulview in Bohinj. Atop an incline, concealed among trees, it offers a highdegree of privacy while at the same time enabling guests’ eyes to take in all theprovocative enchantment of Bohinj’s secluded surroundings. There was thereforenothing out of the ordinary about the incognito arrival of a friendly Britishcouple by the name of Mallowan for a two-week holiday in 1967. The reservedlady of advancing years and her well-mannered husband were in search ofpeace. Yet their hopes were quickly dashed once word got out who they reallywere – Agatha Christie, the famous mystery writer (author of more than 80novels, translated into 103 languages!), after Shakespeare the best-selling authorin the world, and her husband Max Mallowan. With a sense of determinationsimilar to that of her detectives, Agatha chose room 204, the room withthe loveliest view, herself. The room is still officially hers today: it is still furnishedas it was at the time of her visit and it is open to visitors. For lovers of mysteries,the hotel also has an impressive library that features a typewriter from Christie’stime and a number of her books, which the hotel has obtained over the yearsthrough advertisements in the newspapers. It is definitely worth a visit. But beinga great admirer of Agatha Christie, I was more interested in learning whatthis brilliant lady was like and what she did while in Bohinj. That’s why I soughtout those who had a chance to get to know her up close during her visit. I canonly hope that Agatha Christie would be pleased with my sleuthing skills.On the trail of Agatha ChristieI begin by interrogating the first person on my list of suspects, the affable and energeticStojko Žmitek. He was Agatha’s driver during her visit. “How did you managethat?” is the first thing I want to find out. “Ah, it was actually more by chance.Being a conscientious British woman, Agatha did not want a German car, so mygreen Peugeot 404 station wagon was the only option,” confides Stojko, whosework at the time actually involved hiring out boats; working as a driver didn’t appealto him at all, but you don’t say no to Agatha Christie. So he spent a good twoweeks with the pleasant, quiet couple (as he describes Agatha and her husband),showing them Bohinj and many other beautiful sights of Slovenia. On one occasion,Agatha mentioned to Stojko that she would like to try some local Bohinjfare. He took her to the Korošic gostilna or inn in Koprivnik, where the anxiousinnkeeper was beside himself with worry – he didn’t have any meat for such animportant guest! Yet with her simple tastes, Agatha was more than happy with ameal of žganci and curdled milk. “Yes, she was humble, punctual, she paid whatwas owed and she would always invite me to lunch too. A real lady!” adds Stojko.Two former receptionists at Hotel Bellevue also have fond memories of her.Nada Urbanc, who was only 17 at the time, recalls that Agatha wasn’t a particularlydemanding guest; upon her arrival, the only thing she requested, besidesa driver, was a wicker chair, which they had to scour all of Bohinj to find. “Shewould spend hours and hours in that chair, drinking tea in the English mannerand jotting down notes in her notepad. She was definitely up to something!”Nada very clearly recalls. “She would also often spend the afternoon beside anearby cave where they burnt lime, and she’d spend hours at a time gazing intoit.” What could possibly have been on her mind? “She was taciturn, unusual,but her husband was very attentive and they seemed happy,” is how Nada concludesher recollections. That sounds reasonable, I think. The couple did after allspend 46 years together. Alenka Rozman, also a receptionist at the hotel, wouldoften accompany Agatha on her trips because of her impeccable English. She’llnever forget the famous writer. She befriended Agatha and the famous guesteven invited her to visit England. What an honour! When I find out that toshow her gratitude for their care, Agatha presented the girls with silver filigreerings decorated with coral and a signed copy of her detective novel Third Girl,my envy gives a slightly sour tinge to my smile. How vividly I can imagine her,that likeable lady, who according to the accounts of my interlocutors alwayswore beautiful dresses with floral prints, a neat handbag and pearls. With hermysterious nature, she would make the perfect heroine of a novel set in Bohinj.Agatha Christie speaksOn multiple occasions Agatha Christie admitted that she did not like reporters,which is why she also steered clear of them during her visit to Bohinj. But that52


ohinjShe would have made a wonderful aunt or grandmother,” is how a smilingČuček summarises the impressions he got during his meeting with AgathaChristie. And what did the famous author confide to him? Had she come towrite a new book? “I doubt it. At this age a person has the right to relax, don'tyou think?” was her mischievous reply at the time. She then explained thatshe had come to Bohinj to get some fresh air, read in peace, photograph ourcountry's natural beauties and row on the lake. When Čuček asked her if Bohinjcould serve as the setting for a novel, the master of crime, who in the opinion ofall those who met her was very fond of Bohinj, replied: “I really would rather notdefile this corner of the Earth with a murder. It is too beautiful.”A murder with a view?didn’t stop Janez Čuček, a legend of Slovene journalism. In that August of 1967he set out for Hotel Bellevue determined to land an interview with the famouswriter. And with the help of a special trick, he succeeded. Told by the hotel thatthe writer was unavailable, and unable to learn her room number, Čuček stolea glance at the guest list while his photographer distracted the receptionist; hediscovered the number and booked the adjacent room. He then climbed ontothe balcony from his room and, with a bouquet of flowers in hand – which hehad picked just before on the balcony – appeared at Agatha Christie’s door.The writer was very shaken, and her husband even wanted to call the police,but in the end she agreed to a short interview. Today Janez Čuček tells me thathe could not have imagined that this event would still be getting attention40 years later. At the same time, he admits that the mysterious lady made animpression on him too. “She was a real lady, very British, who was conscious ofher reputation yet nonetheless very kind and, at 76, still incredibly smart.Perhaps Agatha really did notwish to “defile” Bohinj with amurder, preferring to set herstories in a different environment;but as she herself admitted,her books first took shape inher head and then on paper.I believe that it was in mysterious Bohinj, where, as they say, one is always alittle closer to oneself, that she got the idea for one of her deftly crafted plots.Had she been younger and in better health during her visit to our little corner ofparadise, I’d be willing to bet that one day we would have seen a book with thetitle A Murder with a View.53

Ne nazadnje to lahko počne tudi vdružbi sebi podobnih; doživetje je tako običajno še bolj vznemirljivo.Če nastopi na t. i. pustolovski dirki (adventure race),bodo morebitne potrebe te vrste prav gotovo potešene.


pustolovska dirkaNujen je timski duhNa večer ali zjutraj pred tekmovanjem organizatorjiseznanijo ekipe s progo. Ta je navadno na krajših 'sprinterskih'preizkušnjah dobro označena, za daljše pa dobijoekipe zemljevid s kontrolnimi točkami, kjer se morajo'odkljukati', ali pa organizatorji podajo njihove koordinate.Na sestanku s tekmovalci organizatorji tudi sporočijoposebna pravila in posredujejo druge pomembneinformacije. Ker nastopajo na tekmovanjih tekmovalcizelo različnih sposobnosti, sta ponavadi na voljo dverazdalji. Ekipe, ki na dolgi razdalji opešajo, lahko preidejona krajšo, vendar pa se uvrstitev ne upošteva.Tekmovanja so praviloma moštvena, večinoma je pogojtudi, da je v ekipi vsaj ena ženska. Kot ekipa nastopita vsajdva, na daljših preizkušnjah pa običajno štirje ali pet tekmovalcev,ki morajo prispeti skupaj na cilj. Zato mnogoekip pomaga najšibkejšemu že preventivno (z nošenjemnahrbtnika, vlečenjem na kolesu in pri plavanju …), nikakorpa s pomočjo ne smejo čakati tako dolgo, da ta žepremočno opeša. Nekatera moštva si določijo vodjo in sirazdelijo odgovornosti, druga se raje odločajo za sprotnoimprovizacijo, nekateri so pri odločanju bolj demokratični,drugi prepustijo ključne odločitve vodji … V vsakemprimeru pa je dobro sodelovanje pogoj za uspeh ekipe.V SlovenijiPri nas so prvo pustolovsko tekmovanje organizirali v Velenjuleta 2003. Pobudnik in glavni organizator tekmovanja,ki so ga izpeljali velenjski taborniki iz rodu Jezerski zmaj, jebil Peter Vrčkovnik, ki je pred tem tudi sam več let nastopalna pustolovskih tekmah na Hrvaškem in v Avstriji. Od tehzačetkov so se tekmovanja močno razvila, za kar je zasluženzlasti neutrudni Matjaž Ravnjak s svojo ekipo.Danes se lahko pri nas preizkusite na več krajših'sprinterskih' pustolovskih tekmovanjih, t. i. 'mestnihavanturah'. Taka tekmovanja so bila doslej organiziranav Velenju, Ljubljani, Škofji Loki, Mariboru, Kranju, KranjskiGori, na Rogli … Ekipo sestavljata dva tekmovalca (spolni pomemben), ki izbirata med progama dveh dolžin –običajno znašata okoli 40 oz. 80 kilometrov. Poleg tegapoteka v Slovenji še veliko mednarodno tekmovanje zokoli 400 kilometrov dolgo progo, ki traja približno tri dniin poteka po Gorenjski, Kamniško-Savinjskih Alpah, pookolici Velenja … Lokacija se vsako leto spreminja. Ekiposestavljajo štirje tekmovalci, od katerih mora biti vsaj enodekle. Najuspešnejša ekipa si na tekmovanju, ki velja kotizbirno, pribori mesto za nastop na svetovnem prvenstvu,ki poteka vsako leto drugje, včasih v gorskih, včasihpa celo v puščavskih okoliščinah. adventure racingAdventure racingAn all-round test of endurance and team spirittext: Marjan Žiberna photographs: Matjaž RavnjakIf you are one of those people to whom running a marathon or takingpart in a long cycling race seems insufficiently demanding or evenmonotonous, you could always try adding paddling, swimming andabseiling to the mix, not to mention orienteering and other unexpectedchallenges. You can even do this in the company of other like-mindedpeople, which usually makes the experience even more exciting. Taking partin an adventure race will without a doubt more than satisfy any needs ofthis kind that you might have.Adventure racing includes running or walking (usually in open countryside),swimming, cycling (over terrain that is usually suitable for a mountainbike), using a waterborne craft of some kind (kayak, canoe, raft, tractorinner tube, etc.), descending or climbing a rope, canyoning or other similartest where the ability to use climbing equipment is required, roller skatingand sometimes even paragliding, caving, horse riding or camel riding…Winter variants also include cross-country skiing, ski touring and ice skating.Competitors also have to demonstrate orienteering skills, except in shorterraces. The disciplines follow the sequence determined by the organiser.One discipline can be repeated several times. One of the challenges of suchcompetitions is, in fact, to expect the unexpected, so organisers often try tooutdo each other when it comes to surprises. For example competitors mayhave to find a checkpoint underwater, undergo tests of memory, take part inkaraoke, and so on.58


adventure racingA sprint lasting six hours…Adventure races differ considerably in terms of duration and length. Theshortest is known as a sprint, although it is hardly short – lasting as it doesfrom two to six hours. Sprint races are usually undemanding in orienteeringterms but can include a test of a specific skill. They usually take place in anurban environment, so they are also known as "urban adventures". Beingrelatively short and less demanding in organisational terms, sprint racesattract a large number of competitors. Longer races, lasting from six to 12hours, are as a rule more difficult from the orienteering point of view, andcompetitors are only provided with a general outline of the route. In evenlonger races lasting up to 30 hours, the organisers provide competitors withspecific information about the route. Participants have to provide their ownbackup teams to transport equipment (bicycles, boats, etc.) to the pointswhere individual trials or transitions take place (e.g. a transition from runningto cycling, etc.). Over shorter distances, backup personnel are not permittedand the transport of equipment is looked after by the organisers.In classic adventure races lasting from around 36 to 72 hours (200 to 400 km),competitors have more opportunities to choose their route, but receive a timepenalty for a missed checkpoint. Longer races, lasting from three to 11 days(500 to 1,000 km), include all the disciplines of multi-day competitions andcan be further spiced up with riding, caving, etc. Lack of sleep is an importantfactor in multi-day competitions. Competitors use their own judgement todecide when to sleep, since the race does not take place in stages but "in onego". The correct deployment of strengths, good logistics, and prevention ofdehydration and exhaustion as a result of burning up energy reserves areamong the key factors of success.Competition rules vary slightly from race to race, but generally speakingall races include the rules that no motorised travel is allowed, competitorsmust carry all gear prescribed by the organiser, and no outside assistance isallowed except at designated transition areas. Organisers may also set theirown special rules, for example that a team receives a time penalty for notkeeping together as a group, or a penalty for damaging race equipment, fordestruction of property along the course, for unsportsmanlike behaviour, forfailure to observe a stop signal when moving through a town, etc.Team spirit is essentialOn the evening or morning before a race, the organisers give the teamsinformation about the course. In the case of shorter "sprint" races, the courseis usually well marked. For longer races teams are given a map showingthe checkpoints they have to "tick off", or alternatively the organisers simplygive them coordinates. At the meeting with competitors, the organisers alsoinform them about special rules and provide other important information.Since competitors of very different abilities take part in races, two distancesare usually available. Teams that fall behind on the longer distance canswitch to the shorter one, but in this case they will be unranked at the finish.Adventure races are as a rule team competitions, and in most cases therehas to be at least one woman in the team. Teams consist of at least twomembers, while in longer races teams of four or five competitors are thenorm. All team members must reach the finish together, so many teams helpthe weakest member pre-emptively (by carrying his or her backpack, providinga tow when cycling or swimming, and so on), and should never wait solong before offering help that the weakest member is already too exhausted.Some teams appoint a team leader and divide up responsibilities, while othersprefer to improvise as they go along. Some teams are more democratic intheir decision-making, while others leave key decisions to the team leader. Inall cases, however, the success of a team depends on good cooperation.In SloveniaThe first adventure race in Slovenia took place in Velenje in 2003. The promoterand main organiser of the event, which was realised with the helpof scouts from the Velenje-based Lake Dragon troop, was Peter Vrčkovnik,who had himself previously competed for several years in adventure racesin Croatia and Austria. From these beginnings adventure racing has developedrapidly, thanks above all to the tireless efforts of Matjaž Ravnjak andhis team.Today competitors can put themselves to the test in several short "sprint"adventure races or "urban adventures". To date, races have been held in Velenje,Ljubljana, Škofja Loka, Maribor, Kranj, Kranjska Gora and Rogla. Teamsconsist of two competitors (of either gender) who choose between coursesof two different lengths – usually around 40 or 80 kilometres. Slovenia alsohosts a major international race over a course of around 400 kilometres.This race lasts approximately three days and covers the Gorenjska region,the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Velenje district. The location changes everyyear. Teams consist of four members, including at least one female competitor.The most successful team in the race, which counts as a qualifying event,wins the chance to take part in the world championship, held in a differentlocation every year, sometimes in mountainous terrain and sometimes evenin desert conditions. Ljubljana je eno tistih mest, katerih življenjeje vzklilo ob reki in se skozi niti časa spletaloter prepletalo z zavito linijo vodnega toka.Linija reke Ljubljanice in njej pripadajoči pasobrežja pomenita danes v mestu, ko so časirečnega prometa stvar preteklosti ali zgolj šeturistične narave, edinstven javni ambient inpomemben prazen prostor v strnjeno grajenemtkivu mestnega jedra. Že Plečnik je govoril oposebni vrednosti reke, ki mesto napaja in mudaje življenje. Njegovo bogato zapuščino –ureditev odprtih javnih prostorov ob reki in čeznjo, od ljubljanskih tržnic, nabrežij in mostov– mestna občina v zadnjih letih dopolnjuje innadgrajuje s številnimi novimi intervencijami, kiurbane praznine delajo še prijaznejše ljudem inposledično še bolj polne življenja. Sprehod ponabrežju Ljubljanice tako ne glede na letni časrazkrije posebno bogato družabno življenje nele v notranjosti številnih kavarn, ampak tudi naprostem, na odprtih javnih prostorih, po čemerje Ljubljana že od nekdaj dobro znana.Legenda tako pravi, da so se na prvo julijskonedeljo leta 1547 ljubljanski meščani zbralina Starem trgu ob vodnjaku, ki ga je takratkrasila stara lipa. Ob glasbi so uživali v hraniin pijači ter brezskrbno kramljali in plesali, vsedokler se razigrani družbi ni pridružil neznanmladenič. Bil je postaven, lepo oblečen in jeob prihodu navzoče vljudno pozdravil. A obdotiku z njim je vse spreletel nenavaden občutek,saj so bile njegove roke ledeno mrzlein mehke. Na ples je povabil lepo ljubljanskodekle, Urško, in Valvasor piše, da potem ko staodplesala najprej nekaj rajev po navadnemnačinu, sta se spustila polagoma v obsežnejšiples in začela krožiti vedno dalje od prostora,ki je sicer omejeval raj. Tako sta privršela odimenovane lipe mimo stiškega dvorca protiLjubljanici; le-tu sta, kakor se pravi, pomêla– Bog daj, da ne za večno! – zakaj vpričo brodnikov,ki čakajo le-ondi zmerom pripravljeniza prevoz, sta skočila v Ljubljanico in izginilagledalcem izpred oči…FOTO: Arhiv hotela Vander Urbani Resort61

FOTO: Miran KambičSled za njima pa se je morda spet pojavila: medCankarjevim nabrežjem in Mestnim trgom senamreč za kultnim ljubljanskim Mačkom medstrnjenimi starimi hišami historičnega mestnegajedra skriva nov urbani interier, ki elementbližnje reke in legende okoli nje prevede vsvojevrstno arhitekturno govorico. Hotel VanderUrbani Resort, kot so ga poimenovali, se nahajav mali Krojaški ulici. Kot že namigne ime ulice,so se v srednjem veku tukaj nahajale čevljarskein krojaške delavnice. Arheološka izkopavanjaso razkrila sledi iz še zgodnejših plasti časa, ko jebila na tem mestu z valobranom utrjena brežinaLjubljanice, ki je v času rimske Emone služilakot majhen pristan. Od nedavnega si lahko tuza diskretno obnovljenimi fasadami obetamonovo doživetje, ki v sicer izrazito sodobnemoblikovalskem jeziku na svoj način piše homagepreteklim plastem tega prostora.Po načrtih ljubljanskega arhitekturnega birojaSadar Vuga so lupini štirih starih meščanskih hišodstranili drobovje in ji podarili novo vsebino,ki poveže štiri stare mestne hiše; za njihovimizidovi so zasnovali nov urbani ambient, hotelVander Urbani Resort. Okrog atrija je vtreh nadstropjih razporejenih 16 sob različnihvelikosti in ambientov. Tudi tam se nadaljujebogat preplet materialov in tekstur, ki paso v nasprotju s hladnimi površinami v poljavnih prostorih hotela zasnovane v na dotiktoplejših, mehkih materialih. Oblazinjene stenein Morosovi počivalniki španske oblikovalkePatricie Urquiole z razkošno gubanim usnjemdelujejo ob ostrih zrcalnih elementih mini barati. Wish boxa še mehkejše. Vse skupaj pa kotcelota obljublja specifično izkušnjo bivanja invse prej kot klasično hotelsko sobo.Če se povzpnemo še višje do mansarde,najdemo tam svetel večnamenski prostor,kjer se odvijajo razni dogodki – od skupinskejoge do poslovnih konferenc –, ter zunaj naterasi t. i. infinity bazen z razgledom na grajskihrib na eni strani in na drugi na nabrežje. Odtukaj se nam mesto odpre kot na dlani inpreko številnih streh začutimo njegov utrip inprav poseben čar merila in lege Ljubljane, kiomogoča širino mestnih praznin in obenemnjihovo intimnost ter raznolikost. Podobno kothotel v butičnem merilu se s svojim celostnimin hkrati svojevrstnim konceptom ter z uporabopravih materialov in oblikovalskih elementovnaslanja na zgodbo mesta, kjer se nahaja.Kljub svojemu izrazito avtorskemu ambientuje torej v dialogu s svojim širšim kontekstom inspoštuje vizualno identiteto starega mestnegajedra. The greatSlovene architect Jože Plečnik was oneof the first to highlight the special valueof the river which supplies the town withwater and life. In recent years, his richlegacy – the regulation of open publicspaces along the river and across it,including Ljubljana’s central market, theLjubljanica embankments and the bridgesspanning the river – has been complementedand enhanced by the city government, withmany new interventions making the openspaces even more people-friendly and evermore full of life. There they were, eating and drinkingto the sound of music, and chatting and dancingin a carefree manner, when a young strangerjoined the merry company. He was a comely,well-dressed youth, and he politely greeted allpresent. But on touching him, everyone felt astrange sensation, because his hands were softand icy cold. He asked Urška, a pretty Ljubljanagirl, to dance with him. The historian Valvasorwrites that "after first dancing a few dances inthe customary manner, they began to describea wider circle, moving further and further awayfrom the confines of the round dance. Eventuallythey flew from the mentioned linden tree past theStična Mansion towards the Ljubljanica; therethey swept round and round – God forbid that itshould be forever! – and in view of the boatmen,who are always waiting there to ferry peopleacross the river, they leaped into the Ljubljanicaand disappeared from view…"And yet, some trace of them may have resurfacedlately: between the Cankar Embankment (Cankarjevonabrežje) and Town Square (Mestni trg),the cluster of old houses behind the iconic Mačekcafé in the historic centre of the city conceals anew urban space which translates the elementof the nearby river and the legends surroundingit into a singular architectural language. This isthe hotel Vander Urbani Resort, located in a smallalley called Krojaška ulica. As the name ("TailorStreet") suggests, this was an area of cobblers andtailor shops in the Middle Ages. Archaeologicaldigs have unearthed traces from even earlier periods,when this site was a sloped riverbank fortifiedby a jetty, which served as a small landing inwhat was then the Roman town of Emona. Sincequite recently, this is also where you can lookforward to a new experience behind discretelyrenovated house fronts, where distinctive moderndesign pays unique homage to the past.Ljubljana-based architects Sadar Vuga havegutted the shells of four old town houses andgiven them new contents, joining the four housestogether and creating a new urban space behindtheir walls – hotel Vander Urbani Resort. A glancethrough the windows from the street affords aglimpse of a collage of various materials, patternsand textures in cool hues of grey, blue and purple,drawing you inside. On the ground floor, you willfind the hotel reception and a restaurant andbar that also welcome non-residents. The stonepaving with its three-dimensional geometric patternevokes the Italian influence in the area, andthe mirror walls and elegant Globo di Luce lights(a 1968 design by Roberto Menghi) create aninteresting play of reflections and visual dynamics.The playful kaleidoscopic images are slightlytoned down by the walls of visible concrete andthe brown leather armchairs between the blueLittle Tulip chairs by the French designer PierrePaulin (a design classic from 1965).The heart of the building is a well-lit vertical atriumcontaining the main stairs and a metal curtainrunning all the way up the building to the atticfloor, where it doubles as a sun awning and – ahumorous touch – recalls the cloak left behindby the "water man" of the legend Around theatrium, 16 rooms of different sizes and charactersare distributed across three floors. The rich blendof materials and textures continues here, but incontrast to the cool surfaces in the public areas,the rooms feature materials that feel warmer andsofter. The upholstered walls and Moroso loungersby the Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, withtheir luxurious folds of leather, seem even softeralongside the sharp mirrored elements of the "wishbox" minibar. The overall effect is that of a specificliving experience and an anything but conventionalhotel room.Another flight of stairs takes you to the attic floor,which accommodates a light-filled multi-purposespace where various events are held – from groupyoga to business conferences – and outside, on theterrace, an infinity pool with a view of the castle hillon one side and the river on the other. From here,the city opens up before you. Gaze out over thesurrounding rooftops and you can feel the pulse ofthe city and the special charm of Ljubljana's scaleand position, which gives breadth, as well as intimacyand variety, to the gaps in the urban fabric.In a similar way, this boutique hotel, with its fullyrealised yet unique concept and its careful choiceof materials and design elements, is informed bythe story of the city in which it is located. Na VI. svetovnem prvenstvu v košarki je namreč jugoslovanskareprezentanca osvojila prvo mesto in košarkarjem so bile podeljenezlate medalje.Nagel vzpon jugoslovanske košarke se je nakazoval že v šestdesetih letihs prvo udeležbo na olimpijskih igrah v Rimu leta 1960. Končna uvrstitevjugoslovanske reprezentance na šesto mesto je bila zgolj napoved zanaprej. Že leta 1961 je namreč reprezentanca na evropskem prvenstvu vBeogradu osvojila srebrno medaljo, nato leta 1963 bron v Wroclawu, 1965.leta srebro v Moskvi in 1969. še eno srebro v Caserti. Jugoslavija se jetako s šestimi srebrnimi medaljami v desetih letih utrdila na svetovnempodiju kot ena izmed najmočnejših selekcij na svetu.Jugoslovanska košarka je dokončno eksplodirala v sedemdesetih letih,ko so se do takrat že ustaljeni ekipi pridružili veteranu Ivu Daneu, PetruSkansiju, Trajku Rajkoviću in Ratu Tvrdiću še člani mlajše generacije: VinkoJelovac, Damir Solman, Ljubodrag Simenović, Dražen Kapičić, AljošaŽorga in Nikola Plećaš. V omenjeni ekipi je z edinstveno kariero izstopalKrešimir Čosić (26. 11. 1948, Zagreb – 25. 5. 1995, ZDA). Med 16. in 24. majem so se pod žarometi Hale Tivoli v Ljubljanizačeli boji za medalje med sedmimi finalnimi reprezentancamiBrazilije, Češkoslovaške, Italije, Sovjetske zveze, Urugvaja, Združenihdržav Amerike in države gostiteljice – Jugoslavije. Na stavnicah staza končno zmago visoko kotirali ZDA in takratna Sovjetska zveza, nadomačem terenu pa se je močno želela dokazati tudi jugoslovanskakošarkarska reprezentanca.Devet tekmovalnih dni je 16. maja s pozdravnim govorom odprltakratni predsednik Jugoslavije, Josip Broz Tito. Tekmovalne dvobojesi je ogledal tudi takratni predsednik FIBE, Abdel Moneim Wahby. Žeprvi tekmovalni dan je poskrbel za majhno senzacijo. Ekipa Brazilije sije z odlično igro priigrala zasluženo zmago nad Sovjetsko zvezo, svojoodlično pripravljenost pa je nadaljevala tudi naslednji dan z zmagonad Italijo. Pohod Brazilcev, nekdanjih dvakratnih svetovnih prvakov,so uspeli zaustaviti šele Jugoslovani. Le ti so si s hitro in bliskovito igro,polno improvizacij in nepričakovanih metov na koš, priigrali zmago zrezultatom 80:55.Kot najboljšo tekmo finala svetovnega prvenstva v Ljubljani so mnogiocenili tekmo med reprezentancama ZDA in Sovjetske zveze, ki se jeodvijala v sredo, 20. maja. Zadnje vzdihljaje tekme so nato zaznamovali trije trenutkinepravilnosti in tri napake reprezentance Sovjetske zveze ter vrhunskaigra reprezentance ZDA. Sovjeti so tekmo izgubili zgolj za tri točke.Sijajne tekme, atomska košarka, matematično točni strelci, senzacionalnezmage in košarkarji v vlogi artistov in žonglerjev pod koši so naredili ugibanjao končnem zmagovalcu aktualna vse do zadnjega dne. Šest tekempred koncem tekmovanja je imelo namreč možnosti za osvojitev kolajnše pet reprezentanc. Jugoslovansko reprezentanco sta čakali še dve težkitekmi, in sicer z reprezentancama ZDA in SZ.Američani so v igri proti Jugoslaviji postavili odlično obrambo igralcevBrodyja, Sillimana, Washingtona, Hilmana in Smitha, ki se jim je jugoslovanskitrener Žeravica zoperstavil z igralci Tvrdićem, Plećašem, Šolmanom,Čosićem in Skansijem. Jugoslovani so v pravem hipu našli dovoljmoči, znanja in taktičnosti, da so se uspeli upreti. Silovitemu presinguAmeričanov se je s svojo mirnostjo in zbranostjo v odločilnih trenutkihuspešno postavil po robu slovenski igralec in kapetan jugoslovanskereprezentance Ivo Daneu. Slavje v Hali Tivoli ob zmagi je bilo nepopisno,boj za zlato odličje je bil odločen.Jugoslovanski košarkarji, prežeti z zmago nad ZDA, niso zmogli doseči šezadnjega uspeha. Odlična sovjetska reprezentanca jih je na zadnji tekmiprvenstva z grobo, nič kaj prijazno igro premagala kar za petnajst točk.Vseeno pa se je VI. svetovno prvenstvo z zlatimi črkami vpisalo v jugoslovanskokošarkarsko zgodovino. Jugoslovanski košarkarji so se zasluženopovzpeli na najvišjo stopnico in kapetan Ivo Daneu je s ponosomdvignil osvojeni pokal. Za njimi so se na drugo mesto uvrstili košarkarjiBrazilije, bron pa je pripadel Sovjetski zvezi. Nesporni favoriti za medaljo,košarkarji Združenih držav Amerike, so prvenstvo zaključili šele na petemmestu. »Bili so to trenutki, ki jih bodo vsi, ki so bili v dvorani, pa tudi tisti,ki so spremljali potek po TV in radijskih aparatih, dolgo pomnili ali nikolipozabili,« je zapisal novinar časopisa Večer 25. maja 1970. This was the monththat Yugoslavia won the World Basketball Championship andthe Yugoslav players stood on the podium to receive theirgold medals.A rapid rise of Yugoslav basketball began to be predicted in the 1960s, startingwith the team's first Olympic appearance in Rome in 1960. The Yugoslavteam's sixth place in the overall classification was the first hint of what wasto come. In 1961 the team took the silver medal at the European Championshipin Belgrade. This was followed by a bronze medal in 1963 in Wroclaw, asilver in Moscow in 1965 and another silver in Caserta in 1969. Zmerajsmo imeli odlične športnike, tudi v časih črno -bele slike, takrat jugoslovanske,nato slovenske. Navijači smo kombinirali televizijsko sliko inradijske komentatorje, saj so le ti bolj slikovito in dramatično opisovalidogajanje. Kot otrok sem vstal ob igranju himne, tresel sem se od strahuin pričakovanja, ali bo Srečko Katanec zadel gol, Iztok Puc sedemmetrovko,Bojan Križaj zvozil strmino, Miran Tepeš varno poletel v globino,Marko Milič zabil odločilen koš in Brigita Bukovec premagala LjudmiloEngquist … Ko jim je uspelo, sem dirjal po celem dvorišču, vpil imedržave in športnika, ki nam je prinesel zmago. V šolah se je ob pomembnihnastopih naših športnikov prekinil pouk, drugod je zastalo delo. Poprireditvah, kjer se je zbiral denar za športnike, smo hodili z listi papirja inspominskimi knjigami, da smo dobili podpise šampionov. Kakšna njihovafotografija je bila sveta stvar.Naš dopust se prilagaja prvenstvom in podpori športnikomPrvič sem bil del množice navijačev, ko smo ob olimpijskih medaljahiz Lillehammerja pričakali naše ase v Ljubljani. Potem se je začelo mojenavijaštvo skupaj s prijatelji na prizoriščih doma in v tujini, kjer so nastopalislovenski športniki in reprezentance. V vseh letnih časih na različnihodprtih prizoriščih, štadionih in v dvoranah. V naših potovalkah so navijaškipripomočki, originalni dresi igralcev, barvice za poslikavo obraza, piščalke,lasulje in spreji za barvanje las. Urejanje maske in zunanje podobe vzameveč časa kot priprava na katerokoli drugo slovesnost. Srce zadrhti, ko sepojavijo na igrišču zvezdniki. Navdušeni smo, ko pridejo na košarkarskiparket košarkarji, ki prinašajo upanje reprezentanci. A to je šele začetek. Obprvem sodnikovem žvižgu tako kot igralci tudi mi začnemo z »delom«. Dozadnjega atoma moči, ne glede na izid, do izgube glasu podpiramo svojoreprezentanco s ploskanjem, vzklikanjem, petjem, koreografijami in z vsemznanim »Kdor ne skače, ni Sloven'c, hej, hej, hej!«Košarka in navijanje sta kot surf na divjih valovihNi igre, ki bi imela toliko preobratov in zahtevala tako veliko odzivnostnavijačev. Tudi stave so tu najbolj vznemirljive. Redko je tekma odločenapred zadnjo četrtino. Odvija se boj za prvo in vsako naslednjo žogo, bojpod košema, igra se čvrsta in agresivna obramba, pomemben je vsakskok, asistenca, prodor, navijači pozdravimo ukradeno žogo nasprotniku,pobeg v protinapad in zabijanje v koš. Koliko različnih metov iz igre,prostih in uspešnih za tri točke, ki ekipo vrnejo v igro, ter tistih v zadnjihsekundah napada ali tekme. Odlične ekipe nikoli ne predajo srečanja,pogosto zrežirajo popoln preobrat, prave čudeže. Ekipa, ki igra brezstrahu in ambiciozno, običajno zmaguje. Napetost narašča, ko se prednost,za katero se je zdelo, da zadostuje za zmago, topi, ko se naenkratvse obrne, obramba ne deluje, ni organizacije igre, mirnosti pri metih,nasprotno moštvo pa se prebudi in napravi neverjeten delni izid. Takratpridejo do izraza: raznovrstnost ekipe, razigranost, znanje, motiviranost,hitrost, spretnost, eksplozivnost, mladost in moč igralcev. Pogosto ključnimož moštva napravi serijo dobrih potez in prevzame odgovornost nasvoja ramena. Pomembno je, kako je moštvo vodeno, na čigavi strani soizkušnje, kdo ima daljšo klop.Košarka je igra za dobre živce igralcev in navijačev. Pogosto ne gre breznešportnih osebnih napak, provokacij, bije se trda tekma, težka za sojenje,kjer je vprašanje, kdo bo prej izgubil živce, kdo se bo začel ukvarjatis sodniškimi odločitvami, izgubil rdečo nit in kdo bo iz kontrole vrgel vse vdvorani. Ne glede na naša pričakovanja, tekmovalnost in želje pa se tekmepraviloma končajo prijateljsko in takšno je tudi druženje navijačev po tekmi.Nam bo tokrat uspelo? Zvezdniki so za In-Flight Magazine povedali, da jimpodpora navijačev tako v klubih, kjer igrajo skozi sezono, zlasti pa podporanavijačev slovenske reprezentance ogromno pomenita.Jaka Lakovič (Sidigas Avellino): »Prepričan sem, da bo dogodek v Slovenijiorganiziran na vrhunski ravni. Navijači bodo lahko poleg vrhunskihkošarkarskih predstav uživali tudi v lepotah Slovenije. Rezultatov nenapovedujem, o njih naj se navijači prepričajo na lastne oči.«Boštjan Nachbar: »Navijači Bamberga, kjer igram, so fantastični. Vednorazprodajo dvorano, so zelo glasni, strastni in zelo fair. Tako na tekmah ninikakršnih izgredov. Želim si, da bi nas podpirala vsa Slovenija, in čutim,da je z nami. Igralci si podpore navijačev, ki smo jo imeli vsa ta leta, želimotudi letos. Prva favorita sta Španija in Francija, želje in pričakovanja paso, da bi bila med nosilci medalj tudi Slovenija.«Goran Dragić: »V Ameriki (Phoenix Suns) je na tekmi ogromno ljudi,a je vzdušje bolj gledališko. Vse se spremeni, ko se začne končnica lige.Takrat se prelevijo v glasne navijače. Najboljše vzdušje pa vedno pripravijoslovenski navijači. Vse bi povabil, da nas spremljajo na EuroBasketu. Želimjim, da bi uživali v košarkarskih predstavah, in seveda, da bi skupaj zmagalina čim več tekmah. Prav tako pa bi lepo povabil navijače iz tujine. Spoznalibodo vsa bogastva Slovenije in prijaznost ljudi. Hkrati pa si bodo v enemdnevu lahko ogledali tekme na različnih prizoriščih, kar bo prav gotovoposebnost prvenstva. Šport je zelo nepredvidljiv in vsaka napoved jenehvaležna. Favoriti so Francozi in Španci, eno izmed medalj pa si sevedaželimo izboriti tudi mi. First Yugoslav, then Slovene. True fans combinedtelevision images and radio commentary, because the latter described eventsin a more vivid and dramatic manner. As a child I used to stand up when thenational anthem was played and I would tremble with fear and anticipationover whether Srečko Katanec would score a goal, whether Iztok Puc's sevenmetrethrow would go in, whether Bojan Križaj would get down the slope inone piece, whether Miran Tepeš would land safely, whether Marko Milič wouldsink the winning basket and whether Brigita Bukovec would beat LudmilaEngquist… When they did, I would race round the yard bellowing the name ofour country and of the athlete who had brought us victory. At school, lessonswould be interrupted when our athletes were involved in an important matchor competition; elsewhere, work would come to a halt. After fundraising eventsfor our athletes, we would walk home with sheets of paper and commemorativebooks bearing the autographs of our champions. Any photograph of themwas a sacred object.We fit our holidays round championships and supporting our teamThe first time I was part of a crowd of supporters was when we waited in Ljubljanato greet Slovenia's skiing aces as they returned from Lillehammer withtheir Olympic medals. That was the beginning of my supporter's career: myfriends and I would make our way to venues at home and abroad, whereverSlovenia's athletes and national teams were competing. At all times of theyear, in a variety of outdoor venues, stadiums and arenas. Our travelling bagscontain supporters' essentials such as original team shirts, face paints, whistles,wigs and coloured hairspray. Sorting out our make-up and appearance takesus longer than it would to get ready for practically any other function. Yourheart pounds when the star players appear. We show our enthusiasm whenbasketball players who bring hope to the team walk out onto the court. But thisis only the beginning. As soon as the referee blows his whistle, it is time to 'get towork' – not only for the players, but for us too. To the last atom of our strength,no matter what the result, we support our team with applause, shouts, singing,choreographed routines and choruses of the famous 'If you don't jump, you'renot a Slovene, hey, hey, hey!'Basketball and basketball supporting are like surfing on giant wavesThere is no sport with as many upsets or one that demands such a big responsefrom supporters. Even betting is more exciting in basketball. Few games aredecided before the last quarter. There is a battle for the first ball and for everyball after that; a battle beneath the baskets; a robust and aggressive defence;every jump, every assist, every breakthrough is important; we supporters cheerevery ball stolen from the opponent, every escape and counter-attack, and everybasket. How many different shots, free throws and successful three-point fieldgoals that put the team back into contention, not to mention those in the lastseconds of an attack or a game. Good teams never give up a game as lost. Oftenthey manage a total reversal: real miracles. A team that plays ambitiously andwithout fear usually wins. Tension grows when an advantage that seemed tobe enough for a victory starts to melt away, when suddenly everything changes,the defence is no longer working, the organisation has gone, shots are no longertaken calmly, the other team wakes up and puts together an incredible scoringrun. When this happens the following factors come into play: the diversity of theteam, and the spirit, experience, motivation, speed, skill, explosiveness, youth andstrength of the players. Often the key player will make a series of good movesand take all the responsibility on his shoulders. It is important how the team isled, on whose side experience lies, who has the longer bench.Basketball is a game that demands good nerves – from players and supportersalike. Few matches go by without unsporting personal fouls and provocations;a hard match is being fought, difficult to call, and the question is whowill lose their nerve first, who will start questioning the referee's decisions, losethe thread and throw the whole arena into chaos. Whatever our expectations,competitive spirit and wishes, matches usually end in a friendly manner, andsupporters' get-togethers after a match are usually friendly too.Will this be our year? Slovenia's basketball stars told In-Flight Magazine that thesupport of fans – at the clubs where they play during the season, but above allat games with the national side – is enormously important.Jaka Lakovič (Sidigas Avellino): 'I am sure that the organisation of the eventin Slovenia will be at the highest level. As well as some excellent basketball, supporterswill be able to enjoy the sights of Slovenia. V soju slepečega soncain odsevu turkiznega morja sopopolna prikazen. Nenavadneoblike, čudovitih barv. Nato seustavijo, kar tam sredi ceste, brezoznak, kjerkoli pač nekdo stoji obcesti. In začne se vaše samoanskopotovanje z avtobusom.79


avtobusiKajti že v naslednji vasi se je avtobus do onemoglostinapolnil z najstniki, ki so z lokalnega kolidža odhajalidomov v bližnje vasi. Potniki so sedeli drug na drugem.Dobesedno. In vsakič, ko je vstopil nov potnik, so sepresedali. Pravila sedežnega reda v samoanskih avtobusihso hujša od tistih v savdskih. Spredaj starejše ženske inmatere z majhnimi otroki. In belci. Na sredini pomembnivaški voditelji in drugi ugledni moški. Zadaj vsi drugi.Vsakokrat, ko vstopi nov potnik, se vsi preostali potniki nanovo razporedijo glede na sedežno hierarhijo. Sestavljajose kot puzzle, prostora pa nikoli ne zmanjka.Nekje na sredini vožnje začne deževati. Še ena kratkaploha začetka deževnega obdobja. Na sicer odprta oknaavtobusa navlečejo polivinilaste zavese. Počutite se kotv kondomu, lepljivo toplo. Takoj ko preneha deževati,odstrejo okna in v avtobus, ki se sopihajoče vzpenja na1.000 metrov visok prelaz v notranjosti otoka, spet vdrevsaj malo zraka. Medtem se potniki še vedno presedajo,in bolj ko se bližamo glavnemu mestu, bolj urbanapostaja pokrajina. In vse več ljudi izstopa. Gnetejo se medprepotenimi telesi, stopajo na prtljago, ki leži med sedeži,vozniku stisnejo v roke drobiž (vsega dobrih 30 stotinov zacelo pot) in skočijo na ulico prestolnice, ki ni niti kraj, kajšele mesto. Lady Willima se na koncu poti pridruži desetinipodobnih avtobusov, ki stojijo na glavni apijski postaji. Čezdobrih deset minut jo že čaka pot nazaj, čez gore do tisteodmaknjene vasi ob čudoviti peščeni plaži. Z vsemi potnikiin kupi vreč v njenem lesenem drobovju.8181

Just wait longenough by the side of the road, staring at the sea,and they'll appear. Thundering down the emptyroad like colourful illusions. In the glare of theblinding sun and the reflection of the turquoisesea, they are a veritable apparition. The unusualshapes, the wonderful colours. Then they stop,right in the middle of the street, with no markingsor signs… anywhere someone happens to bestanding by the side of the road. Thus begins yourSamoan journey by bus.My bus was the Lady Willima. Because its name is so similarto that of a Samoan beer – Vailima – everybody calls it the"Beer Bus". It travels three or four times a day from the village ofSalapanga towards the capital of Samoa, Apia. It's an hourand-a-halfride that's nearly an odyssey…. or at the very leasta short story. Like all the buses in Samoa, it is colourful anddoes not run on a fixed timetable. Twice in the morning, thenonce at noon, once in the afternoon, and a final trip homeat around four. Everything else is left to chance and the passengers'wishes. The family that runs this bus route has twobuses. Both were purchased from dealers in Apia. All the busesin Samoa are imported from the USA. In fact, the entire publictransport system is based on old American school buses.Rickety and wooden.That's exactly what the Lady Willima was like. A charmingold dame who "farts" unabashedly, but nonetheless neverfails to leave you enthused. Waiting for the bus marks thestart of the journey. It can easily happen that you end upwaiting a whole hour. The local residents can generally tellyou when it's supposed to arrive, but in these parts, time is arelative, undefined unit. For my last ride to the capital, I waita little over an hour. Just long enough for me to learn all thedetails and gossip from the life of one of the families in thevillage whose mother is also waiting for the bus. The OldDame finally puttered her way down the road. But being acapricious old dame, she didn't want to stop. The crowd ofpeople waiting in the stifling heat panted after the bus as itmercilessly continued on its way, not letting itself be caught."Oh, it's just going to get Leota, it'll be coming back," gaspeda plump Samoan woman named Sei, out of breath afterrunning several metres. And so it was. A good 15 minuteslater, the Lady Willima came back in the opposite direction.Carrying a single passenger – Leota, who lives at the end ofthe village. Only then did the bus turn around in the directionof the capital. Because Samoan buses are essentiallyalso taxis. They stop at any number of stops. They can alsostop at every house if it suits the villagers and the driver.Sei pushed me into a seat in the first row, while she herselftook a seat on a bench in the middle of the bus, which wascompletely empty at the start of the trip.An American flag hung prominentlyabove the driver's head, and anenormous picture of Bruce Leespread out over the back of the bus.At least I thought it was him. Laterthe villagers convinced me that itwas in fact Jesus in the picture.I only had a chance to look at it for a moment. Already at thenext village, the bus filled beyond capacity with teenagersleaving the local college for their homes in the nearby village.The passengers sat on top of one another. Literally. And everytime a new passenger came on, they changed seats. Therules governing the seating order on Samoan buses are evenworse than those on Saudi buses. Older women and motherswith small children sit up front. And white people. Importantvillage leaders and other eminent men sit in the middle. Everybodyelse sits at the back. Every time a new passenger gets on,all the other passengers rearrange themselves in accordancewith the seating hierarchy. They piece their bodies togetherlike a puzzle, and they never run out of space.Somewhere during the middle of the ride it begins to rain.Just another short bout of rain typical of the start of the rainyseason. PVC curtains are drawn over the bus's otherwiseopen windows. It feels like you're in a condom – sticky andwarm. As soon as it stops raining, they open the curtains, andas the bus putters its way up a 1,000-metre-high pass in theinterior of the island, at least a little bit of air finds its way intothe bus once again. In the meantime the passengers are stillchanging seats, and the closer we get to the capital, the moreurban our surroundings become. And the more people get off.Squeezing their way through sweaty bodies, stepping on thebaggage placed between the seats, they squeeze the changeinto the driver's hand (a whole 30 sene for the entire trip) andjump onto the streets of the capital, which is hardly a town, letalone a city. At the end of the journey, the Lady Willima joinsten or so similar buses parked at the main station in Apia. Agood ten minutes later and her return journey will begin, overthe mountains to that remote village with its divine sandybeach. With all those passengers and piles of bags stowed inits wooden entrails.82

Dežela, polna presenečenj …V navidez še tako nezanimivemmestu, vasi ali pokrajini se podnaključnim kamnom skriva bogatapreteklost. Glineni vojščaki ali pastarodavna tržnica ob svilni cesti.In če ni pod kamnom, je nad njim,na gori, na Hua Shanu, kjer ti obprepadnih poteh zastane dih …Potovanje na zahod Kitajske je lahko zelo naporno, zato se jo jedobro lotiti po etapah in si vmes ogledati kakšno od neštetih kitajskihznamenitosti in posebnosti, predvsem pa se spočiti, dobro napolnitiželodec in nakupiti zaloge ter nabrati novih moči za nadaljevanje poti.Torej nekako tako kot v času starodavnih karavan, ki so potovale zvzhoda na zahod in obratno ter bogatile življenje na tak ali drugačennačin na obeh koncih poti in vmes. In tako sva se skupaj z mojimsopotnikom, sinom Vitom, med najino potjo iz Pekinga v Lanzhounekega meglenega jutra le znašla na ploščadi med xiansko železniškopostajo in mogočnim starodavnim mestnim obzidjem. Upanje, da tapostanek obeta še kaj več kot zgolj brezciljno potikanje po širokih prometnihulicah večmilijonskega mesta in nabiranje moči za nadaljevanjepoti, mi je vlivala le misel na Hua Shan, mogočno sveto taoističnogoro, dobrih 120 km zahodno od Xiana.In ker je bilo lepo in stabilno vreme napovedano šele čez dva dni,nama ni preostalo drugega, kot da čas zapraviva za raziskovanje Xianain njegove bogate okolice. Xian, več kot 1000 km zahodno od Pekinga,je glavno mesto pokrajine Saanxi in ima zelo bogato zgodovinskoozadje, katerega začetki segajo daleč nazaj v leto 350 pred našimštetjem, ko je nedaleč stran od današnjega Xiana stalo navečje mestotedanje Kitajske, Xianyang. Leta 206 ga požgejo uporniki, na mestudanašnjega Xiana pa zgradijo Chang'an, mesto večnega miru, ki povzponih in padcih že v 7. stoletju velja za največje mesto na svetu.Nedavno so odkrili tudi temelje 1400 let stare tržnice, za katero predvidevajo,da je lahko sprejela več kot 40.000 ljudi in je bila ena glavnihpostaj na starodavni svilni cesti, po kateri pa se ni prevažalo in trgovalole z dobrinami, temveč so se po njej mešale in selile tudi različne kulture,običaji in veroizpovedi. Danes je Xian moderno mesto, tistih pravihzgodovinskih in kulturnih spomenikov pa je ostalo le bore malo. So pazato mogočni in impozantni in dajejo mestu nek poseben pečat. Semnedvomno sodita Zhong Lou, nekakšna pagoda, v prevodu pa zvonik,ki dominira v samem centru mesta, in mogočno mestno obzidje. Inče rečem mogočno, potem to velja v vseh možnih superlativih, ki vampadejo na pamet. Obzidje, eno redko ohranjenih na Kitajskem, ki še obkrožamesto, je bilo zgrajeno v času vladavine prvega cesarja dinastijeMing, Zhu Yuanzhanga, v 14. stoletju. Do danes je to 12 metrov visoko,na vrhu pa med 12 do 14 metrov široko in v skupni dolžini skoraj 14kilometrov mogočno obzidje obvarovalo mesto pred vsemi sovražnikominapadi, tudi pred bombardiranjem japonskih letal in topniškimobstreljevanjem v času državljanske vojne v prvi polovici 20. stoletja.Največjo znamenitost Xiana, ki leži več kot 1000 km zahodno od Pekinga,pa najdemo v njegovi neposredni bližini, v Qin Shihuang Lingu,dobrih 30 km stran, kjer je v sredini 70 let prejšnjega stoletja neki kmet85


kitajskaPrav neverjetno je, kje vse so speljane poti, ki prepredajo to goro s petimimed seboj povezannimi vrhovi in povezujejo templje, ki pa so bili vnajinem času zaprti ali pa naju kot tujcev niso spustili noter.po naključju odkril po vsej verjetnosti enega izmed največjih zakladovsvetovne kulturne dediščine. Do danes so v velikanskih podzemnihdvoranah odkrili in odkopali že več kot 7000 glinenih vojščakov in konjevv naravni velikosti ter drugih dragocenih predmetov. Odkrite grobniceso pripadale prvemu kitajskemu cesarju Qin Shi Huang Diju, cesarju, ki jezdružil celotno Kitajsko v eno državo leta 221 pred našim štetjem, glinenavojska pa je bila pokopana z njim vred, saj so takrat verovali, da ji bo lahkotako cesar poveljaval še v onostranstvu. Priznam, da sva bila nad videnimkar prijetno presenečena, še posebej nad izdelanimi detajli, saj naj ne bibila niti dva vojščaka enaka. Zato pa je bilo najino navdušenje malo manjšeob obisku stare tržnice v t. i. muslimanski četrti, kjer naj bi se še vednočutil duh starega Chang'ana in ki naj bi pričal o duhovnem talilnem loncutakratnega velemesta. Ohranjene je še vedno nekaj stare arhitekture,nekaj starih trgovinic, delavnic in obedovalnic, tistega kozmopolitskegavzdušja pa najbrž ni čutiti že leta in leta. Prav nasprotno, mrki bradatiobrazi naju spremljajo nezaupljivo in skoraj sovražno zavrnejo, ko prosivaza vstop na dvorišče ene največjih mošej na Kitajskem, Daqingzhen Si. Ja,vpliv in posledice »vojne proti terorizmu« je čutiti tudi tu. Žal!Tretji dan je posijalo sonce in po dobrih treh urah vožnje čez ravninskopokrajino, bogato obdelanih polj, sva se končno znašla pod goro HuaShan. Pred nama je bilo 3–4 ure napornega vzpona po utrjenih in v skalovklesanih poteh, vendar je zgodnje obilno in slastno kosilo ubilo vsakršnoželjo, da bi v sopari popoldneva še pešačila tja gor. Sploh, če te lahko navrh gore odpelje udobna gondola, a ne? Zato sva pešačenje in podobneužitke raje prepustila gorečim vernikom in zagretim planincem.Kasneje, ko sva na gori prečila greben od severa proti jugu, se je to izkazalokot dobra odločitev, saj bi naju na poti vsekakor ujela tema. Šele protivečeru sva namreč prispela do skromnega in skoraj praznega prenošišča vsteni pod Dong Fengom, kjer sva zadovoljna in v blaženem miru ter tišinitrdno zaspala v zvezdnato noč. In še lepše jutro! Čeprav popolnega in čarobnegasončnega vzhoda zaradi oblačne koprene ni pričakala kar številnamnožica, ki se je že pred peto uro zjutraj zbrala na Dong Fengu.Hua Shan je Wu Yue, ena izmed petih svetih gora, imenovana tudiZahodna velika gora. Poti na gori so seveda urejene, vklesane v živo skaloin varovane, kljub temu pa za neveščega planinca zmerno naporne,vsekakor pa nepriporočljive in prijateljsko odsvetovane vsem, ki imajovsaj minimalne težave z ravnotežjem in vrtoglavico. Stene so namrečprepadne in skoraj navpične, varovalne verige pa na nekaterih mestih, kisva se jim z Vitom raje izognila, ne dajejo prav dobrega občutka. In zaraditeh poti velja Hua Shan za eno najnevarnejših pohodniških gora. Prav neverjetnoje, kje vse so speljane poti, ki prepredajo to goro s petimi medseboj povezannimi vrhovi in povezujejo templje, ki pa so bili v najinemčasu zaprti ali pa naju kot tujcev niso spustili noter. Ne vem točno, zakaj,opazil sem le, da domačini teh težav niso imeli. Pač še ena kitajska posebnost,ni kaj! Kakor koli, kljub težki dostopnosti so na gori zadovoljeneskoraj vse potrebe vedno bolj zahtevnih kitajskih vernikov in nevernikov,ki jo v času poletnih počitnic dobesedno oblegajo. Ampak takrat je itakoblegana cela Kitajska. Zvečer sva bila že v mestu zahodnega miru, Xianu,pomirjena, zadovoljna, sita in pripravljena za nadaljevanje poti, nočnivlak za Lanzhou pa prav prikladen, da se naspiva in malo odpočijeva.86

And if not underthe rocks, then above them, on themountain, on Hua Shan, where theprecipitous paths will take yourbreath away …A journey to the west of China can be a very tiring business, so it's a good ideato tackle it in stages, taking in some of China's countless sights along the way,and above all to rest, fill your stomach and stock up with provisions, and gatheryour strength to continue your journey. Rather like in the days of the great caravansthat travelled from east to west and back again, enriching lives at bothends of the journey and at all the stops in between. So it was that my travellingcompanion – my son Vito – and I found ourselves, in the middle of our journeyfrom Beijing to Lanzhou, standing outside Xi'an railway station one foggymorning facing the imposing ancient city walls. The hope that this stop mightoffer more than aimless wandering along the broad and traffic-filled streets ofa city of several millions and gathering our strength to continue our journeywas nourished by the thought of Hua Shan, one of the sacred mountains ofTaoism, just over 120 kilometres to the west of Xi'an.And since according to the forecast we would have to wait two days for fine,settled weather, there was nothing for it but to pass the time exploring Xi'anand the surrounding area. Xi'an, which lies more than 1,000 km west of Beijing,is the capital of Shaanxi province and has an extraordinarily rich history, withorigins dating back to the year 350 BC, when Xianyang, at that time the largestcity in China, stood not far from today's Xi'an. In 206 BC Xianyang was burnedby rebels and a new city, Chang'an, meaning 'City of Eternal Peace', was builton the site of present-day Xi'an. By the seventh century AD, after many risesand falls, Chang'an had become the largest city in the world. Archaeologistshave recently discovered the foundations of a 1,400-year-old market which, it isestimated, was big enough to hold more than 40,000 people. This was one ofthe main stops on the ancient Silk Road, along which goods were transportedand traded while, at the same time, different cultures, customs and beliefsmingled and moved. Today Xi'an is a modern city, with few surviving historicaland cultural monuments in the true sense. Those that do remain, however, areimpressive and imposing, and give the city a special character. Among them,without a doubt, is the Zhong Lou, a kind of pagoda whose name means 'belltower', which dominates the centre of the city, and the mighty city walls. Andwhen I say 'mighty', this should be understood as standing for all possible superlativesthat may occur to you. The walls – one of the few surviving examplesin China of walls still surrounding a city – were built during the reign of ZhuYuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming dynasty, in the fourteenth century.These powerful walls – 12 metres high, between 12 and 14 metres wide at thetop and with a total length of almost 14 kilometres – have protected the cityright up to the present day against all enemy attacks, including bombing bythe Japanese air force and artillery bombardment during the civil war in thefirst half of the twentieth century.The greatest attraction of Xi'an, however, is found at Qin Shi Huang Ling – theMausoleum of the Qin Emperor – just over 30 kilometres away, where in themid-1970s a farmer chanced upon what is in all likelihood one of the greatesttreasures of world cultural heritage. To date, more than 7,000 life-size terracottawarriors and horses, and other precious artefacts, have been discovered andexcavated in the mausoleum's great underground chambers. The mausoleumis that of Qin Shi Huang, who became the first emperor of a unified China in 221BC. The terracotta army was buried with him, since, according to the beliefs ofthe time, in this way the emperor would still be able to command his army inthe afterlife. I admit that we were pleasantly surprised by what we saw,89

Asa result, our enthusiasm was a little less when we visited the old bazaar in theso-called Muslim Quarter, where the spirit of old Chang'an could apparentlystill be felt, a testimony to the cultural melting pot of the once-great city. Allthat remains is some old architecture, and a few small shops, workshops andeating places. That cosmopolitan atmosphere probably hasn't been felt herefor a great many years. Quite the opposite: sullen bearded visages watched ussuspiciously and, with something approaching hostility, refused our request tobe allowed to enter the courtyard of the Great Mosque of Xi'an, one of the largestmosques in China. Yes, the influence and consequences of the 'war on terror'can be felt even here. A shame!On the third day the sun came out and, after a good three hours' drive acrossa flat landscape of tilled fields, we finally reached the foot of Hua Shan. Aheadof us was a wearisome three- to four-hour climb up surfaced paths carved intothe rock, but a plentiful and delicious early lunch had put paid to any desireto hike up there in the sultry heat of the afternoon. Especially since a comfortablecable car was waiting to take us to the summit… So we left footsloggingand similar delights to ardent believers and keen mountain climbers. Later, aswe crossed the mountain ridge from north to south, this proved to be a gooddecision, as we realised that would have been overtaken by darkness duringthe ascent. It was not until towards evening that we reached our modest andalmost empty accommodation by the cliff below Dong Feng, where, contentedand in blissful peace and silence, we slept soundly through the starry night.And into an even more beautiful morning! Although owing to the veil of cloud,the numerous multitude already gathered at Dong Feng before five o'clock inthe morning did not anticipate a perfect and magical sunrise.Hua Shan is one of the Wu Yue or five sacred mountains and is also knownas the 'West Great Mountain'. The paths on the mountain are of course wellmaintained, cut into the living rock, and suitably protected. Even so, they aremoderately fatiguing for the inexperienced mountaineer and in any case notrecommended – and this is meant as friendly advice – for anyone with eventhe slightest problems of balance or vertigo. The mountain faces are steep orindeed almost vertical, and in some places – which Vito and I preferred to avoid– the safety chains are not exactly reassuring. It is because of these paths thatHua Shan is considered one of the most dangerous mountains in the world forhikers. They make an incredible sight, all the paths criss-crossing this mountain,with its five connected peaks, linking temples which at the time of our visit wereeither closed or perhaps simply closed to foreigners. I don't know exactly why,but I noticed that the locals didn't seem to have these problems. Just anotherChinese peculiarity, I suppose! Be that as it may, despite the difficulties of access,almost all the needs of the increasingly demanding Chinese believers andnon-believers, who literally besiege it during the summer holidays, are met onthe mountain. Mind you, the whole of China is besieged at this time of year.By evening we were back in Xi'an, the City of Western Peace. Relaxed, content,our stomachs full, we were ready to continue our journey and the night train toLanzhou is the ideal place to get a good sleep and rest awhile.They make an incredible sight, all the paths criss-crossing this mountain,with its five connected peaks, linking temples which at the time of ourvisit were either closed or perhaps simply closed to foreigners.91
