ShoppingNew Brunswick is a popular place to shop.To learn about places to shop in yourcommunity, refer to the Yellow Pagesunder Shopping Malls or check yourlocal community’s website.Grocery shoppingMost communities have one or more largesupermarkets that sell all kinds of food orgroceries. Many large supermarkets oftenhave an imported food section where youmay be able to find ingredients to makedishes from your home country.Convenience stores are small neighbourhoodstores. They sell some foods such as breadand milk. They often stay open late. Someare open 24 hours.Prices are almost always higher than those atthe grocery store. Most Canadians do theirgrocery shopping at the supermarket oncea week and shop at convenience stores onlywhen they need one or two items in a hurry.Wine and other drinks containing alcohol aresold in stores run by or the New BrunswickLiquor Commission. Some conveniencestores also sell liquour. The legal drinkingage in New Brunswick is 19. Staff at theliquor store may ask you to produce a photoidentification so you may prove your age.Second-hand storesA great way to find inexpensive clothing andfurniture is to shop in a second-hard store.The items there have been used, but they areoften in very good condition. Prices are muchlower than if the items were new. To finda second-hand store near you, refer to theYellow Pages under Second-Hand Stores orClothing Bought and Sold.Shopping hours and policiesIn New Brunswick, most stores open at 9a.m. and close at 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday.Most stores are also open between noonand 5 p.m. on Sundays. Hours vary. Stores inshopping malls, for instance, are often openuntil 9 p.m. on weekdays.If you buy something that you decide not tokeep, you are usually allowed to return it, butonly if you have the receipt; the item was notused; and if you kept the original packaging.You may get a refund; or you may exchangeit for another item. Many stores have strictpolicies about returns and exchanges, so it isimportant to ask staff or read your receipt toknow what is allowed.Sales taxIn New Brunswick, as in most of Canada, youmust pay a tax on many goods and services.This tax is based on the value of the item. Themore expensive the item, the more tax youwill pay. Sometimes, the tax is included inthe price of the item. Other times, the tax isadded at purchase. The money is given to thegovernment to pay for many of the servicesyou are entitled to as a resident.New Brunswick levies what is called theharmonized sales tax (HST) 2 . At themoment, it is 13 per cent.
