International Programs at Mercer UniversityMercer University’s International Programs include the Office ofInternational Programs, the Office of Study Abroad, and the English LanguageInstitute (ELI). Each office is focused on specific areas of international educationand academic support and operates under the Director of InternationalEducation.The Office of International ProgramsThe Office of International Programs is located in Macon but has aUniversity-wide responsibility to promote and support international education.The Office of International Programs manages exchange programs (studentsand faculty), study abroad programs, and the English Language Institute (ELI).The Office of International Programs is also responsible for developing andarticulating all international exchange and research agreements related toundergraduate programs. The Office of International Programs assists academicdepartments with incoming J-1 visiting students and scholars.All degree-seeking international students who possess F-1 visas on theAtlanta campus and at the Regional Academic Centers in Douglas County andHenry County will need to contact the Office of International Programs in theDavis Administration Building (Atlanta campus) for advising. All international studentsat the Macon and Eastman centers need to visit the Coordinator ofInternational Student and Scholar Services on the Macon campus.All study abroad programs conducted on the Atlanta campus and at theUniversity’s regional academic centers are administered through theInternational Programs’ Study Abroad Office, which is located on the Maconcampus. For more information, please consult the departmental web site atwww.mercer.edu/international, or send an e-mail inquiry to oip@mercer.edu.English Language Institute (ELI): Atlanta CampusOffered on the Atlanta campus, the Mercer University English LanguageInstitute (ELI) is designed to assist international students with developingEnglish language skills at levels sufficient to succeed in an American universityundergraduate or graduate program. Grammar, reading, writing, and speakingskills are taught using an integrated approach. These skills are reinforced inrequired classes and in the computer language laboratory. The ELI provides itsupper-level students with advanced research and writing courses. Studentswho successfully complete the ELI program will fulfill the English languagerequirement for acceptance into all undergraduate and some graduate programs.The curriculum is divided into six levels of skill development. During the academicyear, there are four eight-week sessions that begin in August, October,January, and March. In Atlanta, there is an eight-week summer session thatbegins in May, and a seven-week session that starts in July.International students interested in a degree program in Macon may takeELI courses in Atlanta prior to matriculation.
