However, if the student does not returnfrom a leave of absence, the student’s loan grace period starts at the date theleave began.Generally, only one leave of absence may be granted within a 12-monthperiod. The University may grant one additional leave of up to 30 days for a reasonnot defined in the regulations, if it determines that the leave is necessarydue to unforeseen circumstances.40 / MERCER UNIVERSITY
Jury duty, military service, and conditions covered by the Family andMedical Leave Act are acceptable reasons for granting an additional leave.Unapproved Leave of AbsenceAn unapproved leave of absence is a leave granted by the University foracademic reasons that do not meet the conditions of the Title IV regulations foran “approved” leave of absence. However, this unapproved leave of absencemust be treated as a withdrawal for Title IV purposes. For a student who takesa leave of absence that does not meet the requirements for approval, the withdrawaldate is the date that the student begins the leave of absence.Pre-enrollment deposits will not be refunded should the student not enroll inthe semester for which the deposit was intended.Questions regarding the refund procedures and amounts may be directed toMercer One, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31207. (Telephone: 478-301-111)OverpaymentAll payments made by or on behalf of a student shall be receipted to his/heraccount. A student does not have to request a refund in the event of an overpaymentto his/her account. Refunds are processed regularly by Mercer One.Students are welcome, though, to contact Mercer One to inquire about their eligibilityfor a refund and to determine a general time-frame for when a refund willbe available.Financial AidThe purpose of Mercer’s financial aid program is to provide assistance to studentswho, without such aid, would be unable to attend college. Financial aidmay include scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment. These typesof assistance are extended either singly or in combination. The type of combinationor “package” offered depends upon a student’s need for assistance.In order for a student to be considered for every type of assistance available,a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a Mercer Application forFinancial Aid must be completed each year. Students may complete the FAFSAat www.fafsa.ed.gov and the Mercer application for financial aid atwww.mercer.edu/finaid/rac/app. Paper applications are available from theRegional Academic Center Financial Planning Office and the various centerlocations.Mercer’s priority dates for RECEIPT of all required forms are outlinedbelow:April 1 - Summer Semester Priority Date for All StudentsJune 1 - Fall Semester Priority Date for Returning StudentsJuly 1 - Fall Semester Priority Date for New StudentsNov 15 - Spring Semester Priority Date for All StudentsForms received after the priority dates will be given consideration; however,to ensure financial aid eligibility, all required forms must be received in theFinancial Planning Office at least 30 days prior to the LAST class day of theterm or the last day of enrollment, whichever occurs first.
