$11MILLION IN UPGRADES FOR
NEWCASTLE JOCKEY CLUB
Costs Paid For By raCe Fields Fees Fund
The Newcastle Jockey Club has received a major boost with
the announcement of $11million in upgrades, highlighted
by the creation of an inside track.
The new turf racing surface will be a copy the
Kensington track at Randwick and will span 20m across to cater for
up to 14 starters.
The Newcastle course proper will also undergo major repair and
resurfacing to correct negative cambering and improve crossings and
drainage.
The project will be carried out in two stages to avoid disruption of
any racing at the track.
NSW Racing Minister George Souris on the eve of the Newcastle
Cup meeting said both tracks would be resurfaced using new turf
technology to improve resistance to varied weather.
“When completed, Newcastle will boast outstanding racing
surfaces and enhanced capacity to conduct barrier trials and
Proisir smashes rivals in the Spring Stakes
The Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir made an emphatic statement when toying with his rivals in the
$175,000 Group III Coca-Cola Spring Stakes (1600m) at Newcastle on Wednesday.
Proisir ($1.30 fav) led all the way to defeat the John Thompson-trained Trophies by 5¾ lengths
with Proverb from the Peter Snowden stable, a half head away in third.
… The win took the son of Choisir's record to three wins from as many starts and tightened the horse's
grip on all-in betting for the Group I Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on October 6.
The funding for the project has been allocated from the Race Fields
Newcastle is the first beneficiary but other tracks are also expected
to receive repairs and upgrades in the future.
“This person said Danny Nikolic has run
Sincero Faces Next Big Challenge In Underwood Stakes But Trainer Says He’s Ready
Trainer Stephen Farley is adamant Sincero (Umatilla) has
improved since his stunning first-up win in the Memsie
Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) but questions how much better he
needs to be in Saturday’s Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m)
at Caulfield.
Sincero scored a convincing in the Memsie three weeks ago and
is one of the favourites for the Underwood Stakes, where he will meet
proven weight-for-age stars Manighar (Linamix) and Southern Speed
(Southern Image).
“He looks magnificent…his coat has come on nicely. To say how
much he’s improved is probably hard to say because his win was
sensational the other day,” said Farley.
“He probably doesn’t have to improve much more, does he?”
saying Manighar appeared to have stepped up again from his autumn
form, highlighted by his unlucky second to Southern Speed first-up in
the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m).
Sincero will start from barrier 12 in the field of 14 with other leading
chances Manighar (barrier 10), Southern Speed (11) also drawing wide.
“It was disappointing at first, but it’s probably better than having
him draw barrier one or two where he would get bottled up on the
fence,” Farley said.
“I’d rather him with a little bit of galloping room, especially if they
are going to race tight. On Saturday, there doesn’t appear to be a lot of
speed to me, and it looks like they might race a bit bunched up.”
Manighar is the $3.40 favourite with tab.com.au, ahead of Sincero
at $5.00 with Southern Speed $5.50 and New Zealander Ocean Park
He was also buoyed by last weekend’s Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes
Two things stood out about the result
of last Saturday’s Golden Rose Stakes
(Gr 1, 1400m) – the remarkable
breeding record of Accessories
(Singspiel), dam of the winner Epaulette – and
the great record of that horse’s sire Commands
(Danehill) in the race.
First run as the Listed Golden Rose in
2005 (previously as the Peter Pan Stakes first
contested in 1978), the race was won that year by
Paratroopers – a son of Commands. Upgraded
to Group Three status the following year it was
taken out by Court Command – yet another son
of Commands.
Fast forward six years and he again sires the
winner, this time the race (as it has been since
2009) run at Group One level.
One of his sire’s seven Group One winners
and 48 stakes winners, Epaulette is the third
foal – and third stakes winner – for the imported
Accessories.
Bred by Darley, Accessories did not make
it to the track and began her breeding career
young with her first foal Bullbars (Elusive Quality),
a Group Three winner and runner up in the
Australian Guineas (Gr1, 1600m).
Her second foal is the recently retired Helmet
(Exceed And Excel), a striking chestnut who won
three races at Group One level. Epaulette – also
a member of the Danehill (Danzig) sire line like
Helmet – is thus her second big race winner
and there is more to come with her two-yearold
Street Cry (Machiavellian) filly Brilliance and
a sister to Helmet foaled just a couple of weeks
ago.
So what makes Accessories such an
outstanding broodmare? For starters she hails
from a strong international family – her dam
Anna Matrushka (Mill Reef) was also a great
producer with three Group winners and five
stakes performers amongst her 11 winners.
Her grandam, the three times Group winner
Anna Paola (Prince Ippi), also fared well at stud, as
did her dam Antwerpen (Waldcanter).
Though it is a long way back in the pedigree,
Accessories hails from the same female line
that produced Danzig (Northern Dancer) so it is
interesting that her two Group One winners hail
from that prolific line.
Her 5 X 2 cross of Mill Reef (Never Bend)
may also explain why she has fared so well with
sons of Danehill – those two influential stallions
combining in the pedigrees of at least 148 stakes
winners, including 26 Group One winners.
Also at work in Epaulette’s pedigree is
the highly successful Danehill/Sadler’s Wells
(Northern Dancer) cross and the always strong
influence of the Lady Josephine (Sundridge)
family of which Commands is a member.
Line-bred to the family with multiple
crosses of Mahmoud (Blenheim II) and Fair Trial
(Fairway), as well as strains of Nasrullah (Nearco),
Commands picks up nicely on further strains of
this family and Accessories’ sire Singspiel (In The
Wings) has several – including Mirza II (Blenheim
II), Aristophanes (Hyperion) and further
Mahmoud and Nasrullah.
Danehill – who is of course line-bred to his
own third dam Natalma (Native Dancer), also
dam of Northern Dancer (Nearctic) – loves further
strains of this family and a 4 X 5 cross of Northern
Dancer in Epaulette’s pedigree is supported by a
strain of that stallion’s close relation Halo (Hail To
Reason) – Singspiel’s dam sire.
Both grandsons of Almahmoud (Mahmoud),
By Kristen Manning
Epaulette (outside) SPORTPIX
Northern Dancer and Halo combine beautifully
with at least 121 stakes winners resulting to date.
There are several great broodmares
duplicated in the background of Epaulette’s
pedigree also – namely La Troienne (Teddy),
Black Cherry (Bendigo), Quiver (Toxophilite),
Chelandry (Goldfinch), Sweet Lavender
(Swynford), Selene (Chaucer), Queen Mary
(Gladiator), Anchora (Love Wisely) and Sunshot
(Carbine).
Epaulette is one of 25 Commands stakes
winners boasting more than one strain of
Northern Dancer – six of those line-bred to his
son Danzig and another five to Northern Dancer
via Nijinsky II.
Like Danehill, Commands also excels with
Star Kingdom – especially Bletchingly (ten stakes
winners), Todman (five) and Kaoru Star (five).
Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) boasts a great record
with Commands’ family (that of Eight Carat by
Pieces Of Eight) and 12 of Commands stakes
winners are out of mares boasting a strain. Of
those two (Rain Affair and Altar) have Commands’
close relation Octagonal as their dam sire.
Commands has also fared well with
other strains of Sir Tristram’s sire Sir Ivor (Sir
Gaylord), as well as with Blushing Groom (Red
God) – in particular Quest For Fame (Rainbow
Quest), who is the dam sire of five of his
stakes winners.
CHOISIR
ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG
SIRES IN AUSTRALIA
Analysis: The highly promising Proisir began quickly and soon
led. He set a moderate pace (first 1000m in 61.46) and travelled
comfortably to the home turn. Once into the straight, he dashed
away and was untroubled to win impressively by five and threequarter
lengths running his final 600m in a smart 34.32. The
outsider Trophies had a nice run third on the fence to the turn and
kept battling on for a distant second. Proverb was again ridden
from behind and settled second last in the field of seven. He
remained there until the home turn and had trouble getting clear
until inside the final 200m. He then made ground to get third,
having no chance in the sprint-home tactics of the event. His
stablemate Limes was last on the outside and switched out on
entering the straight and after making a short-lived dash, battled
on for a distant fourth.
Analysis: Rolling Pin enjoyed a good run being untroubled to
lead. He established a moderate pace and quickened nicely from
the 300m, holding off all challenges lasting to win by a half neck.
Ligtinthenite was slowly away and last early before improving
along the rails to be seventh at the 800m. He was six lengths
from the leader at the turn before switching out and then ran on
well for second, which was a good effort as he was also unsuited
by the moderate early pace. Offenders was handy in third one
off the rails, he made the turn three wide and kept fighting on
quite well to get the minor placing and having every chance. The
favourite Kontiki Park was second last in the ten-horse field and
attempted to make a run at the 600m but was forced very wide on
the home turn. He just kept battling on fairly well, being unable to
make ground when the pace increased to finish sixth.
