of the Group One winner and multiple Group performer The Filbert
(Souvran). Consigned by Tyreel Stud, this colt is Bramble Rose’s
fourth foal and she has already produced the stakes winner Maules
Creek (Redoute’s Choice).
The colt was offered earlier this year at the New Zealand
Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale when consigned by Eliza Park
as Agent. He was passed in for NZ$125,000 with a reserve of
NZ$150,000.
The second highest price on Day One was lot 1286, who sold
for $190,000 to Magic Millions as Agent for a Victorian-based
client. The colt by Exceed And Excel (Danehill) is out of Woodland
Nymph (Woodborough) and was consigned by Evergreen Stud Farm
as Agent.
Woodland Nymph was unraced. She has produced two winners
to date including the stakes winner Star Of Luis who raced in Hong
Kong as Hongkong Superstar (San Luis). This colt’s second dam
is Operating Cost (Northjet) who is the dam of the Group winner
Toil (Star Way).
Lot 1282 MAGIC MILLIONS
Tyreel Stud were also responsible for consigning the third
highest price on Day One, lot 1228, a colt by Encosta De Lago
(Fairy King) out of Slip Sliding (Thunder Gulch) who sold to Willie
Leung’s Hong Kong-based Magus Equine for $160,000.
The colt is the seventh foal out of Slip Sliding, who is herself
a daughter of the stakes placed mare Sister Dot (Secretariat),
making her a half sister to Dehere (Deputy Minister). This is also
the family of the AAMI Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) winner Hanks (Encosta
De Lago).
On Day One, eight lots sold for $100,000 or more, with four of
those being offered by Tyreel Stud. The leading sire by average,
with three or more yearlings sold, was Encosta De Lago, whose five
yearlings averaged $108,000 with a top price of $160,000 for the
Slip Sliding colt. Fastnet Rock ($69,000), Testa Rossa ($56,250),
and Lonhro ($50,000) also saw their yearlings sell for averages
well above that of the sale. Buyers from New Zealand, Hong Kong,
Singapore, Philippines and South African were active on day one.
“It was a good even sale today,” Magic Millions Managing
“We thought he [Sebring - Bramble Rose] was a colt that we
could take home and win a Sires Produce with and then see him
train on to win our 2000 Guineas in the spring.
“He has grown and developed into a colt with real quality and
has a beautiful temperament that will enable us to keep him a
colt. I have been coming to this sale now for a very long time and
this is the first time that my team decided we had found a colt
that we just had to have in our stable.
“He will travel home to NZ in the next few days and we will
break him in at Te Akau Stud starting next week.”
David Ellis
“We thought our draft was a commercial group and today’s
results, selling four out of the top eight lots, proved they were
the right horses to bring. Our staff have also done a great job of
presenting the yearlings.
“Lot 1228, the Slip Sliding colt kicked us off with a strong
result of $160,000. He was a leggy, correct colt that came
together in the last three weeks of his prep.
“The Bramble Rose yearling was a attractive strong colt with
a lot of his sire about him. He was popular from the time we
SOROS OUT OF QLD DERBY
The Peter Moody trained Soros (Lonhro) has been
withdrawn from the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m)
due to a virus. Moody is still well represented in the
race with the first and second favourites Brambles
to be popular.”
Scott Holcombe, Tyreel Stud
“Following the inspection days we vendors were pretty upbeat.
Magic Millions did a great job in getting so many international and
domestic buyers on ground to inspect.
“Maybe day two will improve but for the number of inspections
for the most part it failed to translate into bids. The clearance
rate was disappointing but realistically the sale is following the
general trend for this year, a handful of yearlings show a profit
for their breeders whilst the remainder you cop a loss between
marginal and catastrophic.”
Glenn Burrows, Willow Park Stud
“The first crop of Sebring yearlings have been highly sought
after all year and the Bramble Rose colt was another example
of the great types he has produced. In fact, with this colt selling
for $230,000 it provided Sebring with his 50th yearling to break
the $100k barrier, a unique achievement which only three other
stallions can claim this year.
“Congratulations to Tyreel Stud who have been terrific
supporters of Sebring and David Ellis TeAkau stables for
purchasing him.”
Kooringal Stud announced yesterday that Shrapnel (Charge
Forward) will stand his first season at the stud this year.
Shrapnel is a half brother to Wanted (Fastnet Rock) and was
the winning of the SAJC Marsh Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at
his second start as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old he won the
SAJC Yallambee Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) running 1:08.81 for the
1200m trip.
Arguably one of his best performances came in the Ascot Vale
Trainer John Sadler has escaped penalty despite
pleading guilty to two charges over positive swabs from
two horses.
However, Sadler had a conviction recorded when he
fronted the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary (RAD) Board yesterday,
but was not given a penalty because of what the RAD described as
“the unique circumstances” of the case.
The Sadler-trained Deep Cove (Zabeel) and Irish Golfer (High
Chaparral) were, however, disqualified from their January wins.
Deep Cove tested positive to the banned substance Synephrine
in a urine sample taken after its win at Sandown on 11 January.
The same substance was detected in Irish Golfer’s urine sample
after it won at Werribee four days later.
A fee of $6,600 has been set for Shrapnel’s first season at
The six-year-old gelding finished fourth in last year’s Brisbane
Cup won by the Gai Waterhouse-trained Tullamore (Savabeel)
before winning the Tattersall’s Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) at his next start.
Ironstein has been placed on his last two starts, finishing second
in the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 3, 2000m) at Doomben on 12 May
and then third in the Premier’s Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) on 26 May, also
at Doomben.
“I think he’s in better form now than when he won the Tatt’s Cup
last year so he should run well on Saturday,” Ryan said.
“He’s been slowly ticking over and he should peak in the
Brisbane Cup. He’s racing well but he’s been ridden a tad too close
at his past two starts.
“He had to go forward off a wide barrier in the Chairman’s and
o’BRIen ContInues ClassIC suCCess
Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien continue his dominance in the
English Classics, claiming the third and fourth of the season at
Epsom this weekend to go with the two he won at Newmarket four
weeks ago.
The unbeaten Camelot (Montjeu) was the easy winner of the
English Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f), scoring by five lengths from Main
Sequence (Aldebaran), who was a short head ahead of the
Ballydoyle pacemaker Astrology (Galileo).
Camelot is the fourth Derby winner for his sire Montjeu
(Sadler’s Wells), who died earlier this year. Montjeu is the fifth
sire to be represented by four Derby winners, with none yet to
claim five.
Purchased for 525,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling
Sale Book One, Camelot was bred by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Isa Al-
Khalifa in Britain. He is out of Tarfah (Kingmambo), who has a
two-year-old filly by Cape Cross (Green Desert), a yearling colt
by Pivotal (Polar Falcon) and visited Oasis Dream (Green Desert)
this year.
Connections have not yet confirmed the next target for
Camelot but it is thought he may go for the English Triple Crown,
completing his English 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Derby
victories with a win in the English St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f). The last
winner of the English Triple Crown was Nijinsky (Northern Dancer)
in 1970.
Was (Galileo) turned out to be the best of the five Aidan
O’Brien-trained fillies in the English Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f), scoring
by a neck from Shirocco Star (Shirocco). It was in fact a non-
O’Brien-trained filly who was sent off favourite for the classic,
John Gosden’s The Fugue (Dansili), who finished half a length
behind Shirocco Star for third.
This was only the third start for Was, who broke her maiden at
the Curragh last August and finished third in the Blue Wind Stakes
(Gr 3, 1m2f) at Naas on 16 May.
Was topped the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2010,
selling to Demi O’Byrne for 1.2million guineas. As her yearling
price suggests Was has an illustrious pedigree, she is a half sister
to three winners, including the stakes winner Janood (Medicean).
Their dam, Alluring Park (Green Desert), is herself a daughter of
the Phoenix Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) winner Park Express (Ahonoora),
who also foaled the English Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner and sire
New Approach (Galileo).
second in last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). Last year’s
English St Leger (Gr 1, 1m6f) winner Masked Marvel (Montjeu)
was third, three and a quarter lengths further back.
The Irish-bred St Nicholas Abbey is another trained by Aidan
won over £190,000 in prize money from 21 starts.
Bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and Pigeon House Stud, the
five-year-old Pastoral Player is the second stakes winner for
his sire Pastoral Pursuits (Bahamian Bounty), following Rose
Laugh Out Loud (Clodovil) won the Prix de Sandringham (Gr 2,
2, 2400m).
Laugh Out Loud, who is trained by Mick Channon and was
ridden by William Buick, scored by two lengths from the Frenchtrained
Mashoora (Barathea). Laugh Out Loud has now won four
times, with her last start prior to this race her win in the Michael
1000 Guineas winner (Gr 2, 1600m), Electrelane (Dubawi).
Aiken was also partnered by Buick and beat Maxios (Monsun)
by three-quarters of a length. The odds-on favourite Dunaden
Quintessential (Fast ‘n’ Famous) [115] was rewarded
for her consistency with a strong staying performance
on heavy ground to win the Queensland Oaks (Gr 1,
2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Quintessential had
been given two prep runs in the Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3, 1600m)
and The Roses (Gr 3, 2000m) where she stayed on strongly from
last to only be beaten a length.
Quintessential enjoyed a much better run on Saturday and she
stayed strongly proving far the better in the heavy conditions. She
is a particularly consistent filly who is improving; she is a likely type
for the Cups in the spring.
Quintessential Win In Queensland Oaks
wednesday 6 June 2012 ANZ
The Queensland Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m) produced a surprise
result with Pear Tart (Dehere) [112] racing on the pace and fighting
hard in the straight to score by three quarters of a length. Pear Tart
was stepping up sharply in class from a midweek win in a Class 3
at Eagle Farm. Her performance on Saturday was good and she is
obviously a very smart filly.
Free Wheeling (Ad Valorem) [114], who finished second, sets a
good standard, he is an underrated horse and he once again ran
well on Saturday. Of slight concern to the strength of the form was
the closeness of the outsider Stradon (Strada) [113?] who was
only beaten one and a quarter lengths in third place.
The feature race of the weekend, the Prix du Jockey
Club (Gr 1, 2100m – Total prize-money € 1 500 000)
at Chantilly on Sunday, went to the outsider Saonois
(Chichicastenango), who was sent off at 33-1. The 20
runner field meant that many of the fancied runners had trouble in
running, with the French-trained trio of Saint Baudolino (Pivotal),
Nutello (Lemon Drop kid) and Saonois finishing tightly packed
when crossing the line. Saonois finished three quarters of a length
in front of Saint Baudolino, with Nutello a head further back in
third. Although a stewards enquiry was called the placing were left
unchanged.
Saonois as a French bred won a prize-money of € 857.100,
The winner finished fourth in the Prix Greffulhe (Gr 2, 2000m) on
heavy going at Saint-Cloud at the beginning of May but the colt won
the two races earlier in the year, the Prix La Force (Gr 3, 2000m) at
Longchamp in April and the Prix Policeman (Listed, 2000m) on the
fibresand at Cagnes-Sur-Mer in February.
This was the second Jockey Club victory for progeny of
Chichicastenango (Smadoun), who died from colic in Japan earlier
this year. Vision d’Etat, who was from his second crop of just 28
foals, took the Prix du Jockey Club in 2008, while Bubble Chic
finished second to Reliable man (Dalakhani) last year. Saonois is
