The OHS Act – A ComprehensiveOverviewWhat is the purpose of this course?To equip learners with a comprehensive overview in respect of the following, in order to ensure that the objectiveof the OHS Act, 1993, which is to provide and maintain a working environment that is safe and without risk tohealth, is always met:• A holistic approach on the OHS Act, in respect to the 50 sections thereof;• Legal responsibilities liabilities and accountability;• Hazard identification and risk assessments (HIRA);• Incident and accident management, and• Contractor management.Course OutcomesLearners will have a thorough understanding of the aspects outlined under the purpose of this course. This isachieved by addressing the following aspects under each module of this course:• A holistic approach to the OHS Act:o The entire concept of legal obligations inrespect of the OHS Act regarding all roleplayers, i.e. employers, employees, labourbrokers, contractors and visitors;o The content and interpretation of all relevantsections of the OHS Act, 1993.• Legal responsibilities liabilities and accountability:o The basic concept of Law in respect ofcommon law & legislation;o Explaining legal liability terminologies, i.e.criminal, civil, vicarious, & strict liability inrespect of the responsibilities of all roleplayers.• Hazard identification and risk assessments(HIRA):o The reason and purpose of a HIRA, includingall legal requirements in respect thereof,o How to use a typical HIRA Matrix and how toprepare for a HIRA;o Different levels of a HIRA;o How to compile a HIRA report and to presentfeedback to management.• Incident and accident management:o The reason for investigating incidents,o How to identify an incident investigationteam;o The involvement of management with regardto an investigation;o How to prepare for and approach aninvestigation;o What the main focus areas during aninvestigation should be;o Communication during an investigationbetween members of the team, as well as therest of the workforce;o Monitoring of implemented correctivemeasures.• Contractor management:o Drafting of tender specifications & evaluationof potential contractors;o Induction training & specific training whennecessary;o Drafting of health and safety specifications &content of a health and safety plan;o Management of health and safety files;o Regular auditing;o Incorporation of contractors into the Health &Safety Management System.<strong>LexisNexis</strong> is an accredited training provider with the Health and Welfare SETA (HWSETA) HW591PA0706093.<strong>LexisNexis</strong> is an Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) and has a Level 3 BBBEE Rating.
