Otto von Guericke – mayor and inventor, founder of experimental physics.
The university of Magdeburg is named after him.
The university is named after the scientist, politician and engineer
Otto von Guericke (1602–1686). Magdeburg’s famous son became
well-known far beyond the borders of Germany for his pioneering
research on vacuum.
The Otto von Guericke University (OVGU) was founded in 1993 and
is one of the newest universities in Germany. It was formed by combining
the Technical University, the Teacher Training College and the
Magdeburg Medical Academy. Its nine faculties offer around 14,000
students more than 70 courses of study.
The Faculties at a Glance
Mechanical engineering is the most traditional and largest specialist
disciplines at the university. It offers a wide-range of education
and research opportunities including project management, plant and
machine design and manufacturing, logistics and material handling
engineering, the development, processing and testing of new materials,
factory planning and management, and safety and ergonomic
aspects.

Process engineering studies, develops and puts into practice environmentally-friendly
material conversion processes that produce valuable
products from raw materials with the help of physical, biological or chemical
influences. Process engineering is ubiquitous and essential for a
prospering society.
