Ot<strong>to</strong> von Guericke – mayor and inven<strong>to</strong>r, founder of experimental physics.<br />
The university of <strong>Magdeburg</strong> is named after him.<br />
The university is named after the scientist, politician and engineer<br />
Ot<strong>to</strong> von Guericke (1602–1686). <strong>Magdeburg</strong>’s famous son became<br />
well-known far beyond the borders of Germany for his pioneering<br />
research on vacuum.<br />
The Ot<strong>to</strong> von Guericke University (OVGU) was founded in 1993 and<br />
is one of the newest universities in Germany. It was formed by combining<br />
the Technical University, the Teacher Training College and the<br />
<strong>Magdeburg</strong> Medical Academy. Its nine faculties offer around 14,000<br />
students more than 70 courses of study.<br />
The Faculties at a Glance<br />
Mechanical engineering is the most traditional and largest specialist<br />
disciplines at the university. It offers a wide-range of education<br />
and research opportunities including project management, plant and<br />
machine design and manufacturing, logistics and material handling<br />
engineering, the development, processing and testing of new materials,<br />
fac<strong>to</strong>ry planning and management, and safety and ergonomic<br />
aspects.<br />

Process engineering studies, develops and puts in<strong>to</strong> practice environmentally-friendly<br />
material conversion processes that produce valuable<br />
products from raw materials with the help of physical, biological or chemical<br />
influences. Process engineering is ubiqui<strong>to</strong>us and essential for a<br />
prospering society.<br />
