Opportunities Threats<br />
• Through new <strong>and</strong> re-developed natural <strong>and</strong> built<br />
attractions across the two regions, the area can highlight<br />
its “blue” eco-coast credentials. Its Unique Selling<br />
Proposition <strong>of</strong> the place to visit in Queensl<strong>and</strong> for a<br />
marine/coastal/waterway/lakes experience with an<br />
opportunity to come into contact with a variety <strong>of</strong> marine<br />
life<br />
• Increase the dive <strong>and</strong> snorkel <strong>of</strong>ferings, especially in the<br />
Coral Coast area, which will require co-operation with<br />
regions outside this area<br />
• Enhanced, year round, turtle interpretation centre at Mon<br />
Repos (or another appropriate site in the Bundaberg<br />
Region)<br />
• Water Park development at Pialba (Hervey Bay) will be a<br />
complimentary activity to the “blue” eco-adventure coast<br />
theme <strong>and</strong> year-round experience for locals <strong>and</strong> visitors<br />
alike<br />
• Co-operative marketing <strong>and</strong> product development by<br />
Bundaberg <strong>and</strong> Fraser Coast RTOs<br />
• Enhance Maryborough as a “value-add” for visits to the<br />
regions through its historic precincts <strong>and</strong> industries<br />
• Enhanced product in Maryborough linking customs/bond<br />
store history with existing <strong>and</strong> new distilleries or brewery in<br />
the region<br />
• New <strong>and</strong> enhanced tourism products in the hinterl<strong>and</strong><br />
based around food, drive market <strong>and</strong> potential tourist train<br />
• Farm stays <strong>and</strong> B&B developments in the hinterl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
including Woocoo <strong>and</strong> Tiaro<br />
• New all-weather visitor attraction for Hervey Bay themed<br />
around an experience <strong>and</strong> food retail outlet<br />
• S<strong>and</strong> Isl<strong>and</strong> flora <strong>and</strong> fauna marine biodiversity centre built<br />
in Hervey Bay<br />
• Growth in SEQ population <strong>and</strong> therefore people looking for<br />
weekend/short break escapes to nearby destinations<br />
• Development <strong>of</strong> a tourist train operating on the QR<br />
“secondary” line through the hinterl<strong>and</strong> from Maryborough<br />
to Monto, encapsulating activities at the towns on route.<br />
Provide opportunities for visitors to participate in mountain<br />
bike rides, walks, horse trails, farm stays <strong>and</strong> experiencing<br />
the region’s food <strong>and</strong> wine <strong>of</strong>ferings<br />
• New eco-accommodation <strong>and</strong> high quality lodges along<br />
coastal nodes <strong>and</strong> on Fraser Isl<strong>and</strong><br />
• Enhanced interpretation to private Citroen collection in<br />
Gayndah<br />
• New annual events based around aviation <strong>and</strong> food<br />
• Potential for un-manned interpretation kiosk on gold<br />
mining at Mount Perry<br />
• Utilise higher than state average unemployment to train<br />
<strong>and</strong> up skill persons (especially young people) into the<br />
tourism <strong>and</strong> hospitality industry<br />
• Enhancements to Lake McKenzie with visitor facilities on<br />
Fraser Isl<strong>and</strong> particularly at Indian <strong>Head</strong> <strong>and</strong> Eli Creek<br />

• Visitors looking for “small seaside village” experience<br />
disappointed by overdevelopment <strong>of</strong> coastal areas<br />

the two regions will be more difficult to achieve<br />
• Overdevelopment in parts <strong>of</strong> Hervey Bay City<br />
• Lack <strong>of</strong> investment in new accommodation product in<br />
Bundaberg City<br />
• Lack <strong>of</strong> product in hinterl<strong>and</strong> limiting the potential <strong>of</strong><br />
extended length <strong>of</strong> stay in the regions<br />
• Road infrastructure must improve, to be able to compete<br />
with new <strong>and</strong> redeveloped roads in other regions<br />
• Road <strong>and</strong> rail infrastructure development has been<br />
hampered by rapid population growth <strong>and</strong> insufficient time<br />
to adequately masterplan.<br />
• Inability to secure private funds for specified visitor<br />
attractions<br />
