Total thickness<strong>and</strong> position <strong>of</strong> lower contact not known with anyRed beds, Pennsylvanian to Late Tnassic ageSemiconsolidated shale <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong>stone, mostly red <strong>and</strong><strong>of</strong> continental origin. Probably includes Tubarao <strong>and</strong>Independencia seiies <strong>and</strong> Misioness<strong>and</strong>stone <strong>of</strong>eastern <strong>Paraguay</strong>Marine beds, Silurian <strong>and</strong> Devonian age,showing recorded fossil horizonsS<strong>of</strong>t to hard dark-gray shale <strong>and</strong> fine-grained s<strong>and</strong>stone.Probably represents the equivalents <strong>of</strong> Itacurubi <strong>and</strong>Caacupe series <strong>of</strong> eastern <strong>Paraguay</strong> in large part. AHbut the uppermost 120m (375 ft) <strong>of</strong> these beds inLa Paz well appear to be different from, <strong>and</strong> olderthan, beds grouped here in other wellsQuartzitic rocks, Cambrian <strong>and</strong> Ordovician ageHard quartzite <strong>and</strong> s<strong>and</strong>stone, with some hard shale <strong>and</strong>dolomite. Possibly equivalent to s<strong>and</strong>stone <strong>and</strong>quart zite <strong>of</strong> supposed Cambrian <strong>and</strong> Ordovician agethat crop out in northern part <strong>of</strong> the Gran ChacoCollar altitudes <strong>of</strong> wells are approximate8000-9000-10,000 J- 3000FIGUEE 53.
