method from Immersion. This method enables a vibration with one input, thefrequency in milliseconds. The last one is to use Motive Studio, a tool from Immersionto design a completely new tacton (Immersion Corporation 3).The novelty of the use of haptic feedback for in-vehicle touch screens requiresthe usage of simple tactons and a very narrow range of them. The reason is that theuser needs to recognise them quickly, to be able to do that few tactons might belearned and they have to be easy identifiable. That is why it was preferable the useof the first two ways of tacton, the library and the vibration method. Now, thetactons used for each haptic feedback would be explained. There are some facts that have been taken into consideration when choosingthe haptic feedback. First, regarding the library of predesigned tactons of Immersion, the different haptic feedbacks available in the library (Immersion 4) can be definedby four main characteristics. These characteristics are the kind of effect, width of thepulse, percentage of power and number of times that the effect is played. For anytacton chosen from that library each of its characteristics will be discussed. Although, there is one that will be the same for all of them; the percentage of available power. The power will always be 100% due to the low power of haptic feedback of thedevice. Taking into consideration how an effect will be selected, here you can find alittle explanation. It has been said that the use of haptic feedback is looking for areal experience, this could be due to the recently introduction of haptic feedback totouchable devices. To be more precise, when a new perception of a product iscreated one important property is to be as guessable as possible for the new user. The easiest way of producing a good guessability in product is that some domainknowledge of haptic feedback could be used. There is no background for the useron the main subject of haptic feedback in touch screens because there is no hapticfeedback standardized for them. So it might be considered any haptic feedback, not only touch screen haptic feedback. This means that the haptic feedback for avirtual action will be developed from the real haptic feedback with the physicalobject.CONFIRMATION FEEDBACKFor the two confirmation feedback the selection were made upon what could befound in the library of predesigned tactons.Activated ActionFor the activated action confirmation feedback, as in this case it is mostly used foractivated button, the most suitable kind of effect will be a click effect. As explainedin the introduction to this section, in the case of a button, the haptic feedback of areal button might have been taken into consideration for the design of a hapticfeedback of a virtual button in a touch screen in order to be as guessable aspossible. Even thought navigation across the screen suggests the fact that thebuttons are pressed when you released for activation. The fact is that in a real buttonsituation you get two haptic feedback from it; the force against the finger when youpress and release it. This can be regarded as two feedbacks, which is why theconfirmation haptic feedback will be composed by two effects. Regarding thewideness of the pulse, to be able to choose between the different options the real36
