Assessment & Management of Stage I to IV Pressure UlcersRecommendation 7.6Nursing best practice guidelines can be successfully implemented only where there are adequateplanning, resources, organizational and administrative support, as well as the appropriatefacilitation. Organizations may wish to develop a plan for implementation that includes:■ An assessment of organizational readiness and barriers to implementation.■ Involvement of all members (whether in a direct or indirect supportive function) who willcontribute to the implementation process.■ Dedication of a qualified individual to provide the support needed for the educationand implementation process.■ Ongoing opportunities for discussion and education to reinforce the importance ofbest practices.■ Opportunities for reflection on personal and organizational experience in implementingguidelines.Level of Evidence – IVA critical step in the implementation of guidelines must be the formal adoption of the guidelines.Organizations need to consider how to formally incorporate the recommendations to be adopted into theirpolicy and procedure structure (Graham, Harrison, Brouwers, Davies, & Dunn, 2002). This initial step paves the way forgeneral acceptance and integration of the guideline into such systems as the quality management process.New initiatives such as the implementation of a best practice guideline require strong leadership fromnurses who are able to transform the evidence-based recommendations into useful tools that will assist indirecting practice. In this regard, RNAO (through a panel of nurses, researchers and administrators) hasdeveloped the Toolkit: Implementation of Clinical Practice Guidelines (2002b) based on available evidence, theoretical perspectives and consensus. The Toolkit is recommended for guiding the implementation ofthe RNAO best practice guideline Assessment and Management of Stage I to IV Pressure Ulcers. Refer toAppendix R for a description of the Toolkit.52
