he photographic eye» perhaps«T sees the reality more clearly, precisely and profoundly than we can dowith a naked eye immersed in everydaylife. We thus re-examine the presentmoment of Dubrovnik’s reality seeingit through a photographer’s lens, eye, thought and heart in order to get aclearer picture of ourselves, and in orderto see better the face which we show toother people. In this issue we present the prestigiousphotographer of Zagreb, DamilKalogjera, who has served as theofficial photographer of the DubrovnikSummer Festival for several years now.Born in 1962, Damil Kalogjera beganto publish his photographs already atthe age of seventeen. Soon after that hisname began to appear in the renownedCroatian magazines. Kalogjera residesin Zagreb, but – according to thatwhich one can learn about him withoutmeeting him in person – he is a citizenof the world. His interests includearchitecture, theatre and dance, aswell as studio, fashion, applied, traveland documentary photography. Hecollaborates with various visual artists, portrays musicians and composers on aregular basis, and takes photographs ofsailing regattas. Kalogjera’s connectionwith Dubrovnik - which began in hischildhood - continued with his acceptingthe post of the Dubrovnik SummerFestival’s official photographer, andwith his exhibitions of photographs thattestify to the time and circumstances inwhich the festival’s artistic programmeis performed.- One could say that you are not a guestin the City. Do you think that the onewho comes to Dubrovnik for the firsttime as a guest always remains its guest, because – as someone mentioned – thestone heart of the City is reluctant toopen up? Or, that an artist feels at homewherever spiritual realms open up forhim? Do you feel Dubrovnik to be sucha place for you?It is difficult to define this never-endingconnecon between the City and me. Mygrandpa hails from the village of Čilipi, sothat the City has never been a geographicconcept for me, as long as I canremember. Dubrovnik and I are good pals. And one should look for the stone heartkey in his own heart. My collaboraonwith the Dubrovnik Summer Fesvalis, of course, an addional value in thisrelaonship, an entrance cket for thespace of interwoven values of that whichit is, and of that which each of us can – ifhe manages to touch it – create.- Human faces seem to be one ofyour favourite themes. Which faceof Dubrovnik would you choose tophotograph in order to share yourexperience of the City with a visitor, traveller and tourist?48 DOBRODOŠLI U DUBROVNIK LJETO 2011.
I know Dubrovnik too well, and its bestknownand most aracve vistas oendisagree with my experience of theCity’s universal wealth. I would probablychoose some of my favourite residents ofDubrovnik, or a stone built into the citywalls. In my interview with Damil Kalogjeraabout the present-day Dubrovnik, the way he sees and portrays it withhis camera, we mentioned a recentperformance of the contemporaryCroatian artist Siniša Labrović at theDubrovnik Art Gallery. The artistexplored the assimilation power of theDubrovnik spirit core and its capabilityto overcome the merciless appetiteof capital and everyday banality. Heconfronted the music of the DubrovnikSymphony Orchestra with the noisecreated by a concrete mixer. Howpowerful is the song of the Muses inDubrovnik, and can one hear it at all?One cannot help nocing that the City isbeing changed. This fact actually reveals apart the power of this hidden core of theCity – the ability to accept change. Thehuge appete can, on the other hand, betamed only by the spirit of Dubrovnik –another and perhaps major part of theCity’s universal power. As long as the Cityretains its spirit, the song of the Musesremains stronger than the concrete mixernoise and the too loud music from anearby bar. What Kalogjera worries about is thefragility of the spirit which can changethe course of the entire story. Hebelieves the Dubrovnik Summer Festivalto be one of the strongholds where thepower of this spirit is being restored. The Photographic Eye ofD A M I L K A L O G J E R ADubrovnik and I are Good PalsSUMMER 2011WELCOME TO DUBROVNIK 49
