Human Resources continued to support the<br />
Institute’s business plans. Initiatives focused<br />
on meeting staffing requirements, maintaining<br />
competitive salaries; implementing new<br />
schemes to prepare and recruit talent; adapting labor standards; maintaining harmonious<br />
relations with the unions; boosting employees’ quality of life; improving organizational climate;<br />
encouraging employees to become involved in social responsibility areas; supporting the launch<br />
of the new brand and modernizing the Unit’s administrative platform and services.<br />
At December 31, 2007 <strong>Mercantil</strong> <strong>Banco</strong> Universal has 7,708 employees and registered 5% payroll<br />
growth during the year, mainly in the customer service area. Within the framework of the 80th<br />
anniversary celebrating <strong>Mercantil</strong>’s foundation, the Board of Directors implemented a Stock<br />
Purchase Program through which more than 5,500 workers became new <strong>Mercantil</strong> stockholders.<br />
A total of Bs. 6.7 billion was invested in training for 33,500 participants and 338,000 hours/man<br />
of training. The main courses were: Specialization in Operations, Advanced Operating Program,<br />
Credit Analyst Training and Refresher Courses, Management and Professional Training Program,<br />
Monetary Conversion Program and Anti-Money Laundering Program, the majority of which were<br />
distance training. During 2007 competency models were approved for all <strong>Mercantil</strong>’s subsidiaries<br />
with advice from the Hay Group, and the competencies and levels expected for each role<br />
representing the company’s macro-activities and associated positions were determined.<br />
<strong>Mercantil</strong> <strong>Banco</strong> Universal continued to implement, adapt, adjust and modify its internal laborrelated<br />
processes to comply with the new legal provisions: Partial By-laws to the Law on the<br />
Prevention of Money Laundering; Law on Working Conditions and Environment; Law on Persons<br />
with Disabilities; Partial Reform to the Corporate Income Tax Law; Law on the Promotion and<br />
Protection of Breastfeeding, and Law on the Promotion and Protection of Families, Maternity<br />
and Paternity.<br />
