Mercantil’s Social Contributions Year 2007 Education 57% Social Development 18% Culture 13% Healthcare 7% Religious Institutions 5% Social Commitment M e r c a n t i l B a n c o U n i v e r s a l 65 Mercantil demonstrates its commitment to society by adhering to one of its fundamental principles of being “an integral institution and an important factor in the development of the communities and places in which it is involved”. Mercantil Banco Universal's social investment in 2007 was channeled entirely through Fundación Mercantil and totaled Bs. 9,410 million. In addition, Fundación Mercantil received Bs. 1 billion in contributions to strengthen the equity fund through which various communities receive donations and sponsorship. Mercantil asserted its commitment through support for programs and projects whose with goals are aligned with some of the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals, such as school education and healthcare. During 2007 Mercantil earmarked 57% of the contributions it received to educational institutions and 43% to social, cultural, health and religious institutions. Additionally, within the framework of the Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Science and Technology Act, Mercantil donated a total of Bs. 557 million to supporting initiatives to undertake research programs, train human talent and encourage communities to innovate. Education One example of Mercantil’s support for school education in Venezuela is the importance giving to the development of the Ponle Cariño a tu Escuela (Give your School a Helping Hand) program which is celebrating its 25th anniversary of joint activities with the School Buildings Foundation, FEDE (Fundación de Edificaciones Educativas) under the Ministry of Education and Sports. This program supports Venezuelan education and community action and is a national benchmark which to date has raised awareness among more than 900,000 students and educational communities about the importance of conserving the environment in which their schools are located. Mercantil also supports the work in the provinces of the renowned and respected Fe y Alegría educational institution and the Venezuelan Scout Association. During the year, support was given to a number of programs at national, state and private universities: Universidad Central de Venezuela, Simón Bolívar, Metropolitana, Católica Andrés Bello, Los Andes, del Zulia and Monte Ávila, the purpose being to support a series of activities undertaken by those universities and to promote medium and long-term aid programs aimed at furthering the personal and professional development of students with financial needs. Research-oriented projects also received support.
