<strong>Mercantil</strong> continued to back the work of Superatec (betterment through technology) and<br />
Fundación Oportunitas which promotes training for youngsters who find themselves excluded<br />
from the formal education system.<br />
Health and social development<br />
MERCANTIL’s contributions in 2007 went to educational<br />
institutions (57%) and social development, cultural,<br />
healthcare and religious institutions (43%)<br />
Various public and private social development organizations are undertaking excellent projects,<br />
programs and activities to meet the needs of children and teenagers in particular, in priority areas<br />
such as food and nutrition, prevention of disease and drug use, abandonment and school<br />
reinsertion. The principal recipients of <strong>Mercantil</strong>’s contributions in this field during fiscal year<br />
2007 were: “Comedores Madre Teresa de Calcuta” (COMATEC), “Centro El Portal”, “Fipan”, “Una<br />
Mano Amiga”, “Asociación Civil Un Mundo Mejor”, “Salud y Familia“, “Programa de Atención<br />
Comunitaria a la Infancia”, ”Instituto de Capacitación Profesional para la Mujer“, “Unamos al Mundo<br />
por la Vida” and “Organización Social Católica San Ignacio”.<br />
Through “Asociación Civil Cáritas de Venezuela”, <strong>Mercantil</strong> created a support mechanism to help<br />
the population in the event of a natural disaster and in 2007 dealt with situations that occurred<br />
in Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia.<br />
It has also backed the programs and projects of institutions renowned for their work in the field<br />
of health, such as “Fundación Amigos del Niño con Cáncer”, “Fundación Cardioamigos”, “Centro de<br />
Salud Santa Inés”, “Hospital Ortopédico Infantil”, “Hospital San Juan de Dios”, “Hospital Clínico<br />
Universitario de Caracas” and “Fundación Cardiológica Cardiocentro”.<br />
