Composition, Physics and Psychology.Upon arrival at the School, <strong>in</strong>ternational students are assessed thoroughly by an ESLspecialist to determ<strong>in</strong>e their English writ<strong>in</strong>g and speak<strong>in</strong>g skills. The specialist also determ<strong>in</strong>estheir level of <strong>in</strong>dependence with their studies. This <strong>in</strong>formation is used to determ<strong>in</strong>e programmeplacement <strong>in</strong> the full <strong>in</strong>tegration, the partial <strong>in</strong>tegration, or the ESL programme. Depend<strong>in</strong>g upontheir degree of understand<strong>in</strong>g of English, the students receive support from the ESL specialistdur<strong>in</strong>g the day. Each student also has a faculty member as an adviser, and they meet dur<strong>in</strong>g eachweek to provide extra assistance with school work. For the students who want to prepare for theTOEFL exam, assistance is available after the regular school day. A Language PartnersProgramme l<strong>in</strong>ks an <strong>in</strong>ternational student with an English-speak<strong>in</strong>g buddy. This programmebuilds friendships and strengthens the students' speak<strong>in</strong>g skills.Class size <strong>in</strong> Senior School ranges between 10 and 22 students. Learn<strong>in</strong>g assistance isreadily given to students who need it and performance is monitored on a monthly basis to ensurethat progress is ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed. Each student's performance is regularly evaluated with <strong>in</strong>ternal andexternal tests, projects, written assignments, progress reports, and formal exam<strong>in</strong>ations (heldtwice dur<strong>in</strong>g the year). With an average student-teacher ratio of 10:1, teachers can closelysupervise and guide the progress of each student.About mid-October, parent-teacher <strong>in</strong>terviews are held. Thereafter, at the end of eachterm, a comprehensive written report is mailed to parents. The report<strong>in</strong>g form reflects theSchool's emphasis on basic skills and attitudes, as developed by each <strong>in</strong>dividual student. TheSchool strives to give an impression to parents of the standard of their child's work <strong>in</strong> relation tothe rest of her class, and <strong>in</strong> respect to their child's own abilities.Student ServicesBalmoral Hall has a Career Resource Centre, staffed by a Career Counsellor. Servicesprovided <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>dividual and group work, computer assistance with career programmes,resume coach<strong>in</strong>g, job shadow<strong>in</strong>g, portfolio development, post-secondary liaison, course selectionassistance, Career Speakers Bureau, Take our Daughters to Work Day and Career News. TheCareer Counsellor teams with the Service Learn<strong>in</strong>g Coord<strong>in</strong>ator who provides mentorships andvolunteer opportunities.Balmoral Hall students also have the services of a Personal Issues Counsellor who meetswith students and their families. <strong>In</strong>dividual appo<strong>in</strong>tments, group counsell<strong>in</strong>g and referrals areprovided. Both tra<strong>in</strong>ed counsellors are members of the <strong>Manitoba</strong> School CounsellorsAssociation.<strong>In</strong>formation TechnologySenior School students have access to several computer labs. The IBM Lab, which is also usedby the Middle Students, is a fully networked, Pentium Multimedia Lab. Students and teacherscan also make use of the two M<strong>in</strong>i-labs which are equally equipped. Full access to the <strong>In</strong>ternet isprovided for each student and parents and students are required to sign an Acceptable Use Policy.Technology is also <strong>in</strong>corporated <strong>in</strong>to the curriculum for students from Grade Seven to Grade 12.8
