as the site for the amalgamated school when the Board of Anglican churchmen that governedSt. John's College School voted to close the school.S<strong>in</strong>ce its establishment, St. John's-Ravenscourt has flourished: new build<strong>in</strong>gs have beenadded and enrollment has gone up, particularly after girls became eligible for admission fromGrade 9 <strong>in</strong> 1971. <strong>In</strong> 1985, the School also accepted girls <strong>in</strong>to board<strong>in</strong>g, reviv<strong>in</strong>g a service whichhad been discont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong> 1851.<strong>In</strong> November of 1981, Her Majesty the Queen granted her patronage to the School and ayear later Queen Elizabeth gave her gracious permission to establish a major scholarship <strong>in</strong> hername to mark the grant<strong>in</strong>g of her patronage.Over the years, SJR's students have brought it great dist<strong>in</strong>ction. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1991, students havewon three world championships <strong>in</strong> the <strong>In</strong>ternational Math Olympiad and the School has won theWorld Public Speak<strong>in</strong>g and Debat<strong>in</strong>g Championship 10 times.Today, St. John's-Ravenscourt is governed by an <strong>in</strong>dependent board and is a member ofthe Canadian Association of <strong>In</strong>dependent Schools 2 , and an affiliate of the National Associationof <strong>In</strong>dependent Schools <strong>in</strong> the United States. Its academic programme is accredited by the<strong>Manitoba</strong>Department of <strong>Education</strong>. Over 98% of its graduates attend university and nearly half areawarded entrance scholarships. Seventeen alumni have won Rhodes scholarships.PhilosophySt. John's-Ravenscourt is a university preparatory school committed to the pursuit of academicexcellence. At SJR students develop a sound knowledge of required arts and science subjects andacquire a wide range of traditional academic skills. They also learn to question premises,draw their own conclusions and develop divergent th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g skills.The School encourages <strong>in</strong>dependence, self-discipl<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>tegrity, compassion, leadershipand a sense of social responsibility. The School requires students to be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> a wide rangeof cultural and creative activities <strong>in</strong> addition to purely academic pursuits.Students are also made aware of the necessity for cont<strong>in</strong>uous <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> physicalactivity throughout their adult lives to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> fitness and well- be<strong>in</strong>g.The School fosters a national and <strong>in</strong>ternational outlook - a keen awareness of Canada andall Canadians, as well as an understand<strong>in</strong>g of and respect for other peoples and nations.CampusThe 23 acre campus consists of four soccer pitches, a beach volleyball pit, and two tennis courts,.The Head of School lives on-campus <strong>in</strong> Shepard House. Thomson House, the oldest build<strong>in</strong>g oncampus, built <strong>in</strong> 1914, is an impos<strong>in</strong>g former mansion which housed the Ravenscourt School forBoys when it moved to the site <strong>in</strong> 1934. Now, that build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cludes the Development, Alumniand F<strong>in</strong>ance Offices, the School uniform shop and the Girls' Residence.2 See Appendix III.2
