Mrs. Sumerlus comes toBalmoral Hall with an extensive background in the field of education. She holds aBachelor of Education from the University of Manitoba and a Level 1 SchoolAdministrator’s Certificate.Her work experience is multi-faceted including teaching from Kindergartenthrough to Junior High and working in the area of Special Needs. She has also heldpositions as Librarian, Counsellor, S.T.A.R.S. Program Teacher, Language Arts andCurriculum Implementation Teacher. For the last four years, she has acted as Vice-Principal and Principal of two Winnipeg schools.Mrs. Sumerlus’ involvement in school life has included roles on committees suchas a the Professional Development Committee; Vision, Goals and School PlanCommittee; Effective School Change Committee; Crisis Response Committee; Multi-Cultural Committee; Publicity Committee and Junior High Liaison Committee.Professionally, she has attended several workshops relating to the fields of SpecialEducation, Guidance and Administration.Mrs. Sumerlus is also active in the community. In 1991, she was involved in theWinnipeg Affirmative Action Task Force and has facilitated and trained workshops forsexually abused adolescents, as well as on topics such as conflict resolution andparenting. She has been a member of several Jewish community organizations, oftenchairing their committees. She has been honoured with a Volunteer Recognition Awardand co-authored Accessing Literacy in the Elementary Classroom.In 1998/99, the Balmoral faculty contained 65 full and part-time teachers, 32 of whomtaught in Middle and Senior School. Of this number, 28 were women, 5 men and all werequalified in their subjects. Six had Master's degrees. Because the Head is able to select staff froma large number of candidates, the result has been a faculty dedicated to excellence. In 1998, Mr.Bill Korytowski, B.Sc., B.Ed., M.A., M.Ed. was one of 50 Canadian teachers presented with theScience and Mathematics Teacher Award. Nominated by his peers, Mr. Korytowski was singledout for his commitment, innovation and creativity in helping students develop the skills to thrivein a knowledge-based economy.The School is committed to professional development and therefore the programme ofstudy is regularly reviewed and updated to incorporate the latest teaching techniques and content.Student Body and Student DressIn 1998/99, there were 550 students enrolled in Balmoral from Junior Kindergarten toGrade 12; in the Middle and Senior Schools (Grades 7-12), there were 220 day and 32 residencestudents.
