Nearby are a park and golf course where students can walk or cross-country ski.W<strong>in</strong>nipeg, (population 618,477), is the capital and the largest city <strong>in</strong> the prov<strong>in</strong>ce andprovides a wide variety of amenities, cultural and otherwise.HistorySt. John's-Ravenscourt came <strong>in</strong>to legal existence <strong>in</strong> 1950 with the amalgamation of St. John'sCollege School and Ravenscourt School for Boys. And yet like a number of other amalgamatedschools, its real roots go back much farther. <strong>In</strong>deed, St. John's College School was founded <strong>in</strong>1820, mak<strong>in</strong>g it the second oldest English-speak<strong>in</strong>g residential school <strong>in</strong> Canada, and by far theoldest <strong>in</strong> Western Canada. Over the years, that school became closely connected with theAnglican Church and earned a reputation for welcom<strong>in</strong>g students from far-flung areas whereeducational facilities were limited, and of accept<strong>in</strong>g deserv<strong>in</strong>g students whose parents couldnot afford otherwise to educate them.Ravenscourt, St. John's partner <strong>in</strong> the amalgamation, is of more recent v<strong>in</strong>tage, hav<strong>in</strong>gbeen founded <strong>in</strong> 1929 by Norman Young, a Rhodes Scholar.
