That town is a small, rural community (population 538), situated less than a mile (1km) from the North Dakota border, and <strong>in</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong>, about 6 miles (10 kms) from Altonaand about 70 miles (112 kms) south of W<strong>in</strong>nipeg (population 618,477). For the School, Gretna'ssize and location away from larger urban centres, has allowed it to develop its uniqueprogramme. Students travel by bus on field trips and to <strong>in</strong>ter-school events.HistoryMennonite Collegiate <strong>In</strong>stitute has been <strong>in</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uous existence <strong>in</strong> Gretna s<strong>in</strong>ce 1891. Orig<strong>in</strong>allythat town was chosen not only because it was one of the major po<strong>in</strong>ts of entry and dispersal forsupplies throughout the south-central area of <strong>Manitoba</strong>, but also because it was on the immediateside of the so-called Mennonite West Reserve and could therefore serve the Mennonitecommunity's educational needs.The <strong>In</strong>stitute was the first post-elementary Mennonite school <strong>in</strong> Western Canada. Asorig<strong>in</strong>ally established, its primary purpose was to give the high school prerequisites for teachertra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to prospective teachers <strong>in</strong> the public (elementary) schools of the Mennonite community.This rema<strong>in</strong>ed its ma<strong>in</strong> purpose until the 1950s when the smaller rural Mennonite schools beganto be phased out and when high school graduation ceased to be the m<strong>in</strong>imum requirement forteacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong>.Today, its aim is to give students a thorough ground<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the academics required for highschool graduation, but to do so with<strong>in</strong> the framework of a Christian perspective <strong>in</strong> preparation fortra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and Christian service <strong>in</strong> a variety of professions and walks of life.MCI is sponsored by 22 Mennonite congregations and the <strong>In</strong>stitute is accredited by the1 See Appendix V.1
