Committee members benefit by learn<strong>in</strong>g how to work <strong>in</strong>committee, to plan, and to exercise leadership.At MCI, a full complement of <strong>in</strong>door and outdoor sports is available on an <strong>in</strong>termural aswell as an <strong>in</strong>ter-varsity basis. At the <strong>in</strong>ter-varsity level, the School fields teams <strong>in</strong> soccer,volleyball, cross country, hockey, basketball, track and field, badm<strong>in</strong>ton, baseball and fastball.Junior varsity teams for younger students are organized <strong>in</strong> several sports.Generally, all students are required to ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a pass<strong>in</strong>g grade <strong>in</strong> all subjects to qualifyor rema<strong>in</strong> on <strong>in</strong>ter-varsity teams, <strong>in</strong> special choirs, and dramatics.An even<strong>in</strong>g course <strong>in</strong> driver education, cost<strong>in</strong>g roughly $100.00 is offered twice a year tostudents fifteen and a half or older. Driv<strong>in</strong>g tests may be taken <strong>in</strong> Altona but must be arranged bythe <strong>in</strong>dividual student. For the road test, the student must also provide the vehicle.On weekends, residence students are encouraged to return to their homes, but theresidence rema<strong>in</strong>s open to accommodate those who cannot.On average, the residence is closed one weekend per month when all students need to gohome. For those who are unable to do this, MCI has made special arrangements with "hostfamilies" to allow weekend homestays.Dur<strong>in</strong>g the year, special events <strong>in</strong>clude a Christian Life Retreat at a church camp <strong>in</strong> earlyOctober. The event is designed to strengthen community spirt and it <strong>in</strong>cludes activities such ancanoe<strong>in</strong>g, or hik<strong>in</strong>g. But it also is set to challenge those who have not accepted Christ to doso, and it <strong>in</strong>vites those that have to greater faithfulness. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the third week of March, MCIsponsors Youth Orbit which is open not only to MCIs students but to all young people <strong>in</strong> Grades8 to 11 across southern <strong>Manitoba</strong>. The event <strong>in</strong>cludes speakers as well as special <strong>in</strong>terest.workshops rang<strong>in</strong>g from photography to candle mak<strong>in</strong>g. F<strong>in</strong>ally, <strong>in</strong> May, the student councilsponsors a fundrais<strong>in</strong>g Workday <strong>in</strong> which students spend a day rais<strong>in</strong>g money and work<strong>in</strong>g atcamps and service projects <strong>in</strong> the area.The School encourages students to participate <strong>in</strong> a number of enrichment programmes.There is a ten day bus excursion for the entire graduat<strong>in</strong>g class which <strong>in</strong> the past has takenstudents to various states south of the border. Students are responsible for fund-rais<strong>in</strong>g for thistrip. Students may also take the "Urban Plunge" which is a three day exposure to urban life <strong>in</strong>W<strong>in</strong>nipeg's North End where students do volunteer work.Generally students are responsible for their own behavior and the School expects that <strong>in</strong>their behavior students will serve as a positive witness to others. Thus for example, students areprohibited from smok<strong>in</strong>g, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g or us<strong>in</strong>g illicit drugs.Admission and CostsThe Mennonite Collegiate <strong>In</strong>stitute seeks students from an <strong>In</strong>ter-Mennonite background but italso welcomes non-Mennonite applicants open to explor<strong>in</strong>g their own religious values andcommitments. No student will be denied admission on the basis of race, colour or religiousbelief. Successful candidates understand the support the goals of the School's programme and areprepared to live <strong>in</strong> accordance with the values promoted at MCI.Students who apply to the <strong>In</strong>stitute for the first time are required to present officialtranscripts of all their previous high school credits.6
