Student Activities and Student ConductSJR promotes healthy and honest competition, while at the same time encourag<strong>in</strong>g students tobalance the need to compete with the need to work cooperatively with others. It also recognizesthat <strong>in</strong>dividuals should be encouraged to develop their full potential at their own paceand, wherever possible, <strong>in</strong> their own way.The School is well known for the success of its sports teams. These <strong>in</strong>clude: soccer,hockey, basketball, volleyball, field hockey, rugby, badm<strong>in</strong>ton, golf, ultimate frisbee, track andfield and cross country ski<strong>in</strong>g. S<strong>in</strong>ce the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, 11 of its hockey players have moved tothe NHL. <strong>In</strong> the last ten years SJR has won prov<strong>in</strong>cial championships <strong>in</strong> hockey, volleyball,soccer, basketball and rugby.There are also a huge number of clubs from which to select . These <strong>in</strong>clude: drama, art,yearbook, chess, science, math league, debat<strong>in</strong>g and public speak<strong>in</strong>g, photography, choir, band,guitar, rock band, creative writ<strong>in</strong>g, Amnesty <strong>In</strong>ternational, spr<strong>in</strong>g music recital Executive game,Student newspaper and the environment club. Some club participants have won renown beyondschool walls. Members of the debat<strong>in</strong>g club have won ten world championships <strong>in</strong> debat<strong>in</strong>g andpublic speak<strong>in</strong>g.Each year, to develop an awareness of community. SJR students also donate their timeand energy to raise funds for the Children's Hospital Research Foundation, Christmas Cheerboard, St. Amant Centre, Special Olympics, the Terry Fox Run and W<strong>in</strong>nipeg Harvest.On weekends, students <strong>in</strong> residence get up later and go to bed later and apart from studyperiods, church go<strong>in</strong>g and home letter writ<strong>in</strong>g, their time is their own. Various activities arehowever organized on a voluntary basis, such as visits to places of <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong>,swimm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Pan Am pool or watch<strong>in</strong>g some special event <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>nipeg.As a non-denom<strong>in</strong>ational school, St. John's-Ravenscourt does not <strong>in</strong>sist on any formalreligious activity. On Sundays, Students can walk to churches <strong>in</strong> the vic<strong>in</strong>ity while those wish<strong>in</strong>gto attend other places of worship have special arrangements made for them.There is also a Student Government <strong>in</strong> which the Head Boy and Head Girl are assisted bysix day prefects and six board<strong>in</strong>g prefects, all elected by students and staff.SJR's high academic standards are matched by its high standards of behavior. Thusstudents are prohibited possess<strong>in</strong>g or distribut<strong>in</strong>g drugs on or off campus, sell<strong>in</strong>g alcohol orcigarettes to a m<strong>in</strong>or, verbal or physical abuse, bully<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>timidation or any form of harassment,theft, vandalism, cheat<strong>in</strong>g, plagiarism and ly<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>In</strong> addition, students who repeatedly breakother school rules or demonstrate a disregard for the ideals of the School may be expelledimmediately or not <strong>in</strong>vited to enroll for the upcom<strong>in</strong>g year.Admission and CostsSt. John's-Ravenscourt selects students of above average <strong>in</strong>telligence from a variety of differentfaiths and nationalities. It cannot accept students with severe emotional or behavioral problems,or severe learn<strong>in</strong>g disabilities. The School gives preference to brothers and sisters of studentsalready enrolled. All else be<strong>in</strong>g equal, those who apply earliest will also receive preference.7
