Kee Klamp Ltd is playing an integral part in
the construction of one of the world’s most
ambitious and inventive seating systems,
‘stretch’, designed by the renowned designer
and Creative Director of Habitat, Tom Dixon
and constructed in Trafalgar Square for the
London Design Festival (19th-22nd September
2005).
Kee Klamp has provided over 600 Kee Klamp(r)
fittings from its market leading range for the
project, together with all the required steel
tube, and the design and installation services
necessary to assemble this extraordinary structure.
The only other elements in the seating system’s
construction are thousands of blue rubber
bands. Rapidly assembled overnight on Sunday
18th September, the complex and innovative
structure was unveiled to the general public at
8am on Monday 19th September, snaking around
Trafalgar Square for a total length of 80 metres.
“When we found out about this fantastic opportunity
to get involved with Tom and the London
Design Festival, we jumped at it,” said John
Thelwell, Marketing Manager, Kee Klamp Ltd.
“Not only is it staggeringly original, but this project
also gets the British public up close and
personal with cutting edge design whilst showing
off just how incredibly versatile Kee
Klamp(r) fittings are - the only limit is your
imagination”.
‘Stretch’ is part of Tom Dixon’s ongoing passion
to bring quality contemporary design to everybody’s
lives. Since being awarded an OBE for his
Ventilation hygiene -
read this first
New from the Heating and
Ventilating Contractors’
Association (HVCA) is their ‘Guide
to Good Practice. Internal
Cleanliness and Ventilation
Systems’ now available from the
publications division of HVCA.
Released at a time when the air
quality expectations of building
occupiers is higher than ever,
this comprehensive
guide to ventilation
hygiene
should be essential
reading for
anyone working
with building ventilation,
and therefore
an invaluable aid to
specifiers, consultants
and legislators to
ensure that ventilation
systems are properly
maintained.
Adherence to the standards
contained in the guide will
provide clear and detailed
proof that the ventilation system in
a building is safe and well maintained,
which, in turn, is vital for
securing adequate insurance cover.
The guide details further improvements
that can be made to best
practice standards, with particular
reference to kitchen extract systems.
It will be especially valuable,
therefore, in relation to kitchen
ventilation, due to the elevated
risk of grease deposits in extract
services to British design in 2000, Tom Dixon has
achieved world recognition for his extraordinary
design vision. Tom continues to run his prestigious
furniture and product design label whilst
remaining the creative director for Habitat.
“Kee Klamp Ltd have been fantastic with their
support for the project; we came up with an
systems, which can cause fires.
“As the bar for air quality standards
is raised, the industry is seeking
guidance,” commented Gareth
Keller, HVCA head of specialist
group services.
“This new guide draws on the very
extensive experience of HVCA
members, and has been
written to meet the need
for in-depth best practice
advice.”
Keller added that,
“Lower work performance
is often symptomatic
of poor
indoor air quality in
offices and schools,
and asthma and
allergies are more
prevalent than
ever.
“Everyone has
the right to healthy
indoor air, so it is vital
that we do everything in our
power to ensure optimum indoor
air quality.
“Apart from the health benefits
and improved productivity from
more comfortable staff, it’s also
worth bearing in mind that energy
bills are also much lower with properly
cleaned ventilation.
“We feel certain that this guide will
provide a crucial resource for anyone
concerned with building ventilation
hygiene.”
Leeds City Council has purchased
a fleet of five Ransomes Spider
mowers for maintaining steep
banks around the city. The
unique, remotely controlled
rotary mowers were delivered
recently following a 30-week trial
period with a machine hired in
from Swan Plant.
Chris Simpson, Transport and Fleet
Manager at Leeds City Council, was
stopped in his tracks by a demonstration
on the Ransomes Jacobsen
stand at SALTEX in 2004. He immediately
recognised its potential and
how it could benefit his Parks &
Countryside team.
A demonstration was duly arranged
by Palmers Groundcare, Ransomes
Jacobsen’s local dealer at Selby,
which took place on a particularly
difficult site in Leeds. It confirmed
that the Spider could do what was
being claimed and that it had other
benefits too, especially with regard
to Health and Safety.
Kee Klamp and Tom Dixon ‘stretch’ the boundaries
of seating design for the London Festival
idea which could only be transformed into a
product due to the versatility of Kee Klamp fittings
and the support and vision of the technical
team and management of Kee Klamp Ltd.” said
Tom Dixon. “I hope that everybody who visits
‘stretch’ gets as much enjoyment from it as the
project team has had in designing the concept
and creating the final structure.”
The market leading Kee Klamp(r) fittings range
includes a wide variety of easy to use, galvanised
cast iron fittings for the quick and simple
connection of pre-cut lengths of standard
tubing to form any type of tubular framework
structure. All fittings within this versatile and
extensive product range incorporate an integral
socket set screw which locks the fitting securely
onto its tube, eliminating the need for time
consuming welding or specialist installation
skills. A standard hex ratchet and tube cutters
are the only tools required to create strong,
rigid structures. This approach helps keep structure
assembly time down to an absolute minimum,
as with ‘stretch’, and reduce costs whilst
giving excellent strength and stability.
With over 100 million units sold, Kee Klamp Ltd
produces the world’s leading structural tube fittings.
Kee Klamp Ltd also provides tubular solutions
for roof edge protection with its popular
KeeGuard system, and for interior or exterior
balustrading applications with its Keenect system.
Kee Klamp Ltd is certified to BS EN ISO
9001 and is recognised as an Investor In People.
5 Ransomes Spiders
weave web across Leeds
“This was relatively new technology
and we wanted to test the
water, so to speak”, Chris Simpson
said. “I contacted David Curwell at
Swan and he agreed to purchase
the machine, which we then hired
for a 30 week contract period. We
used it throughout the winter on
steeper embankments where we
had carried out site specific risk
assessments. Four operators were
trained to use it at the various
locations. The 30-week hire was a
really good way to understand how
the machine operated; its numerous
plus points, its limitations and
the benefits that it offers. As
responsible employers we have a
duty to pursue all avenues with
regard to the health and safety of
our operators. Hand and arm vibration
is a particularly important
issue and the Spider, being remotely
operated, alleviates this at a
stroke.”
