Use of the DribbleAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESRecommendations For TheNational System• Players in development programmesshould be encouraged and directed toregularly practice dribbling techniqueaway from team practice. This is a mostimportant area for U12’s, U14’s andU16’s player development.• All development level coaches in thenational system should familiarisethemselves with the various techniquesand how to coach and teach them forthe first time (acquisition and refinementstages) at the various levels.• For team offense development andreading the play, “motion offence”including the use of the dribble drivesituation will be taught. The dribble usewill be coached in context and in linewith the spirit of the Areas of Emphasis.• The use of the dribble and point guardplay will be a focus at all representativedevelopment levels.• National team players will be taughtthe dribble but more importantly thephases and situations where dribbling isused and is most important.• The speed dribble, change of pacecombined with the onside (or in andaway move), should be developed inall players. This should be extended to“moves on the move” at speed in thefull court situations where the ball isalso crossed over at speed.• Defining the dribble height whencoaching needs to be consistent. Assuch the general teaching cues fordribble height are; rib height for thespeed dribble, hip height in the controlphase and below the knee for thecrossover height. Players must dribblethe ball hard and quick into the floor(not bounce it), become proficient atcontrolling the dribble at these variousheights and get used to moving quickly,stopping, and varying the heights of thedribble depending on the situation andphase they are in.• All players at all levels should beproficient to competent with the controldribble in the half court or front courtoffensive situation(crossover to protectthe ball), combined with the retreatdribble and the ability to pass out off adribble or to use the hand-off with thecontrol dribble at their age level.• The bust out speed dribble (in the fastbreak/defensive stop phase) with aquick pass ahead will be encouragedin all players in the developmentsystem.• The dribble drive kick offense will notcome at the expense of effectivepassing out of the back court for thefast break.100
