Footwork and MovementAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESRecommendations For Clubs• Review the Basic Skills Checklist forfootwork and stance and understandthat it underpins all subsequent skilldevelopment.• Note the national systemrecommendations and use the ClubSkills Guide ChecklistsRecommendations ForCoaches• Coaches should “scrutinise” footworkexecution and drilling particularly inthe “warm up” phase of individualand team training. Correct executionshould be encouraged always, evenin warm-ups.• All the points made above in both thenational system and the clubrecommendations are appropriate forcoaches at all levels.• In coaching junior or youth teams, coaches will be required to continuallyreinforce the ready position or triplethreat position in all drills, be it for pass, dribble or shot.• Increase the emphasis on a correctstarting position for all drills from theready / triple threat; will reinforce andprovide repetition in the importance oftriple threat and all the players’decision making processes.• Review players’ hand positioning incatching a ball (hand movement) andin shooting – to be consistentlyreviewed. This is a most importantfundamental for U12’s U14’s and evenU16’s. Ensure that players catch theball correctly and can quickly adaptthe hand position into a shootingposition.• Coaches need to continue to developthe movement base for all playersthroughout their coaching career.Neglecting these areas only passes onfaults to the next coach and ultimatelyleads to player frustration with inabilityto correctly execute the fundamentals.• Ensure the triple threat positioning withpivot and step from a dead ballsituation is mastered by club players, especially in the pass drive optionsagainst a defender.• Encourage motion offense as ameans to improving player movementon the court.• Coach players how to cut and lead toreceive the ball. Ensure cutters have thenecessary footwork to attack anopponent through body to bodycontact. This will include the “slasharm/swim stroke” arm movements whendenied position. These hand and armmovements become equally importantunder the “fundamentals of movement”.This can be introduced at the U14’slevel but is most important at U16’s,U18’s and youth levels.• Ensure that all players catch thebasketball with their hands in thecorrect position and that this can easilybe rotated to the correct handpositioning for shooting.41
