Use of the DribbleAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESPlayers Have To Commit ToAdditional Individual DribblingPracticePlayers will have to commit to deliberatepractice in their own time to develop theirdribbling skill towards mastery. Coacheswill need to coach and, effectivelydemonstrate and explain the technique sothat it can be rehearsed correctly withoutsupervision. When drilling at practice as anindividual skill we need repetition and tochallenge dribbling control at speed. Our objective is to be effective with theappropriate dribble technique bothindividually and collectively. Thereforemore attention at practice time and withsession planning to the dribble skill anddevelopment of the techniques arerequired.Master The Speed DribbleTechnique In The Full CourtThe speed dribble is a basic dribbletechnique for going into a fastbreak phase. The change of pace or hesitation dribble todelay or beat a defender is also part of thespeed dribble phase. At speed the playermust be able to change direction with aspeed dribble with “moves on the move”or slow down to a control phase of“crossover dribble”.Once basic dribble technique and controlare attained all dribblers should be movedinto this full court speed dribble phase toimprove their dribbling and control. That isat speed, but with control and withpurpose. All junior players must practicethis regularly.Master The Control DribbleTechniques In The Half CourtIn the control phase the player mustdevelop in order• a “control dribble”• crossover protection dribbles• a “retreat dribble” or “drag dribble” tocreate space by moving in a backwardsdirection to create space for individualand team offence. The control phase is where ball handling orcontrolled dribble is the major function.Head up and good vision; with an effectivearm bar, become additional coachingpoints within the control dribble technique.Individually players can be too dependenton the dribble to create their one on oneopportunity. The use of the dribble in theone on one situation isn’t necessarily aboutthe number of dribbles nor singularly justspeed to beat an opponent. It is abouttechnique and confidence. The Dribble Has Varying SituationalUses Which Require DifferentTechniquesOne on one moves need effective directpenetration principles against the defender. One on one dribbling moves should alsocome off the catch meaning that it shouldbe able to be initiated from the triple threatposition. The dribble crossover andeffective body to body penetration willresult in the dribblers head and shouldersgetting past the defenders shoulder. This isthe outcome we seek. Too often the playerneeds a dribble to set up a dribble (moveson the move). This is not always possiblebecause of the shot clock, proactive98
