Point Guard PlayWhat Aspect Needs Most Attention?• The first area (physical, movement,balance and footwork) is aboutreemphasis of the physical attributesneeded by players. It is also about thefitness, conditioning and physicalpreparation of our players. Importantlyit is specifically about better coachingof movement, footwork and balance(including stance and body posture) inall that we do.• ON-Ball defence is also aboutreemphasising balance/stance,footwork, movement and positioning. Itis also about core strength (ability tosquat) and physical endurance.• Shooting and passing are aboutcontinuing to develop offensiveindividual skills with an emphasis ondeveloping our passing and receivingas members of a team.• Team offence and OFF-Ball defensivepositioning are about tactical aspects ofthe game which require underpinningtechnical and physical techniques tosupport the team concepts.• Finally, point guard play is about thetactical positional aspect to bereemphasised in order for British teamsto be more competitive on theinternational stage. It also requirescertain technical and physicalunderpinning techniques. It suggests areview of how our point guards arecurrently playing and a re-education intheir technical skills and gameunderstanding.In these nine areas there are some aspectswhich combine “technical and tacticalplay” or “physical and technical skill” -they are often inter-related and dependenton the coach’s experience and knowledge.4
