Combined theyare the heart of team offence and movingthe ball to challenge the defence. Passing, ball movement and better player movementwill be at the heart of a new and improvedBritish style of play.Generally, our national teams are turningthe ball over more frequently than otherteams at European Championships. This isin part due to the players’ lack ofunderstanding about how to effectivelypass the ball, but also how to receive apass, when pressure defence is involved. The majority of turnovers come from thedesire to pass but with ineffective execution. Some observers are calling this poor“decision making”. There is little doubt that, irrespective of the reasons, our commitmentto the execution of passing is not ofinternational junior level standard. Many passing turnovers are due to passiveoffensive behaviour in not knowing what todo. However, some turnovers are caused bypoor leads against pressure defence. Nodoubt improvements in the skills of passingand receiving are crucial to winning the“possession game” i.e. minimising turnovers. At present because passing and receivingare ineffective there is pressure to dribbleinstead. The dribble, drive, kick game is gaining a lotof attention as discussed in the Use of theDribble and Offence sections of the Areas ofEmphasis. While it is effective in purpose, ithas lead to an over reliance and created anopportunity cost, in that we are nowstruggling with any passing orientatedoffence, including the fast break and passingout of the backcourt. By practicing andprioritising dribbling we are not improvingpassing and receiving under pressure. The misuse of the dribble comes atthe expense of the pass. The pass creates advantage for theteam. The dribble creates advantage forthe individual.83
