OFF-ball DefenceAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESCoach and Teach The PhysicalMovement Techniques Of Off-ballDefence• The ability to hold a defensive stancewhile in help position and react quicklyis a physical competency.• An increased emphasis on thedevelopment of physical abilities so thatplayers are able to hold a defensivestance and close out and contain well.• Teaching appropriate balance footworkand movement. This will involveteaching and drilling stance and thelateral push slide (for approx threeslides) continual movement from step orrun into stance.• OFF-Ball defenders should stay instance and reposition through steppingbut preferably through sliding.• Defenders should be coached to slidein their defensive stance up and downthe line of the pass in the flat trianglewhile the line of the pass remainsthe same.• Stepping forward or backwards in astance from the line of the pass is also amovement technique.Correct and Master The CloseoutTechnique• Establish a short close out technique aswell as an adjustment for a long closeout. Defending a shooter is afundamental ON-Ball defencetechnique.• Defending a shooter coming off ascreen (normally at U16’s, U18’s andseniors) is an OFF-Ball responsibilityand technique. Firstly a player canfollow the shooter and force the shooterto curl. This will involve the defender ofthe screener also to help. Secondly aplayer can go under the screen andforce the shooter to flair away from thescreen. A player can switch with thescreener’s defender.• The close out action once the screen isnavigated is basically the same as theON-Ball close out technique and endsin a good stance on the close out to ashooter the use of the hand position tocontest/disrupt the shot is alsoimportant.137
